[mou-net] South Washington County Sightings
Yesterday I birded Carpenter Nature Center with Abrahm Simons from about 10 am-12:30 pm. Raptors included 33 BALD EAGLES, 36 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON. There were thousands of waterfowl flyovers, most of which were either too high up or too far out to ID. However, we were able to ID 5 different flocks of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, totaling around 400 individuals. Mixed in were 2 SNOW GEESE, 1 white phase and 1 blue phase. These flocks were all heading west/northwest. Other highlights included a couple of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, KILLDEER and a singing PURPLE FINCH. I went to Afton State Park afterward and added 3 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 10 more Red-tails, 3 more Bald Eagles, and several Eastern Bluebirds. I looked/listened for, but did not find, Eastern Meadowlark. Last night at home in Cottage Grove I had 1 calling NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL (10th consecutive day) and 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK displaying. This morning I found several FOX SPARROWS and one SONG SPARROW. Good birding. [mou-net] Snow Buntings, Washington County
There is a reliable flock of 10+ Snow Buntings hanging out in southern Woodbury. I have seen them along Dale Rd. between Hwy 19 and Manning Ave and Cottage Grove Drive south of Dale--always around midday or slightly after. This month I have seen them 2/5, 2/6, and 2/10--every day I have driven that stretch. In January I saw larger flocks on Neal Ave S. (between 70th and 80th) and 100th St. (between Manning and Kimbro). [mou-net] Pt. Douglas Black Scoter Got Eaten
Shortly after 10 AM this morning, I was with Abrahm Simons and two other birders when we saw a Bald Eagle swoop down and fly off with the Black Scoter. Other birds were a flock of 25 Trumpeter Swans, a couple hundred Common Mergansers, a few hundred Canada Geese, and 4 Bald Eagles total. There is very little open water left. [mou-net] Tufted Titmouse and Hooded Warblers, Afton State Park
This morning I found a TUFTED TITMOUSE singing in the picnic area at the dead-end parking lot in Afton State Park (Washington County). In addition, the two previously-reported HOODED WARBLERS were present and singing, just to the right of the power lines as you look toward the river from that same parking area. On my way out, I also heard two HENSLOW'S SPARROWS along the main road between the entrance station and the turnoff for the group camp. Finally, there was a late BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in the aforementioned picnic area. I found large numbers of warblers this morning along the river at Grey Cloud Dunes SNA. Yesterday I checked out Neal Ave. again with Abrahm Simons and we got great looks at some of the LAPLAND LONGSPURS that are just south of 70th St. I'd estimate there were at least 100 individuals in the flock. Farther south on Neal we found an EASTERN MEADOWLARK, American Kestrel, and Trumpeter Swans. On 100th St. we found a flock of at least 200 Common Redpolls, followed by another flock of at least 100 on 77th St. Abrahm told me that before I joined him, he was able to briefly relocate the SNOW BUNTINGS that I reported there the previous day. A group of us birders saw 3 EVENING GROSBEAKS at about 10:45 AM, and also heard some RED CROSSBILLS.
