Re: [Mpls] What is missing -- pizza and Munsingwear
My very first job in high school was at H. Salt Fish Chips on Lake Chicago. I loved their fish. They used to have one downtown on Hennepin Ave next to the Skyway Theater, too. Pamela Taylor --- Tony Hill [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Munsingwear is now owned by Perry Ellis. They closed their plant here due to high labor costs. They kept their corporate HQ here for about 10 years after the plant closed. It was in the warehouse district, in the 7xx block on N. 1st St., and the Remnant Room was on Industrial Blvd. There used to be a lot more pizza around campus. Remember the slices always ready place at Washington Ontario? And who remembers Shakey's? They only had one store in the city, at Oak Washington. But they had at least seven others in the suburbs. Now the only Shakey's in Minnesota is in Rochester, and that restaurant is doing quite well. What I will add to the list are our two grandiose bank branches -- the marble interior of the Midland Bank at 4th St. and 2nd Ave. S. (marble hasn't been disturbed, although it's now offices) and the paneled interior of the U.S. Bank (formerly FM) at 6th and Marquette (yes, it's still a branch, but just in the past four years, they've disrupted the marvelous view from the balcony). Does anyone else think that partitions and cubicles have wrecked classic interior design? And I miss Zantigo at 8th Hennepin! VALLI PIZZA! That was it! Thank you very much, Barbara. What a trip to drop down in that basement with it's 6.5 ft ceilings where even I had to duck to move around and sit at colored-glass-candle-lit wooden tables in the smoky/pizza flavored air (a wonder we didn't all choke to death in there on a given night). The cardboard crust was a challenge, but the ingredients were great. But it was really the music that took us there. The people who stayed upstairs were of another culture altogether. Valli was THE place to be on a Friday night after classes. Wasn't Mama D's where Annie's Parlor is now? Boy. Now I can sleep again. The Weatherball (What did the colors mean?) I believe Andy Driscoll has these correct here: The Weatherball (of Northwestern National Bank): When the Weatherball is red, warmer weather is ahead; When the Weatherball is white, colder weather is in sight; When the Weatherball is green, no change in weather is foreseen. When the Weatherball is blinking (red, green or white) precipitation is expected. But he's missing one: When the Weatherball is steady black, warning, nuclear attack. (Of course, that was never an official one -- just a semi-joke, semi-serious line told by insiders at NWNB during the midst of the cold war, back when compaines like Univac Control Data people like Seymour Cray had the Twin Cities fairly high on the Soviet Union's strike list.) And I believe the Weatherball isn't really gone; just moved to St. Paul. I thought it was donated to the Mn State Fair to be put on display there. But Norwest only donated the equipment, not any funds to rebuild install it, and the Fair Board declined to spend their funds on something that they felt would be mainly an advertisement for Norwest. So, as I understand it, the Weatherball is still sitting in storage somewhere on the Fairgrounds in St. Paul (possibly tucked away in the basement under the cattle barn?). ___ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A Civil City Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls

Re: [Mpls] What is missing? - Nankin
Several people have mentioned missing the Nankin restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. Well that is gone, the cook some other employees are still working in Minneapolis. They are at the Red Dragon Restaurant, at 2116 Lyndale Ave South, just across from the Wedge co-op ( phone 612-874-8877). And they are still using many of the same recipes, so you can still get the Nankin food. Just ask for the Nankin chow mein, and the waitress will know exactly what you mean. I went there with an 88-year old friend, who tracked them down. She says she has been going to the Nankin since she was a little girl, at several locations. She still likes that food, and says it still tastes the same at the Red Dragon now. Re: [Mpls] What is missing?
The streetcar bridge that spanned Minnehaha Creek connecting Bryant Avenue South. Does anybody know when it was torn down? The pedestrian bridge that was to its east still exists. I stood on that bridge the other day and was struck how it's beginning to look like a mini-35W below there with all the asphalt bike and walking paths springing up. When we were kids we cut our own paths down there and fancied it our own wilderness - what can you say, city kids! A few blocks from there was the Dairy Queen on Lyndale where the Washburn Branch library stands today. Also, does anybody remember the old concrete bridge over the creek at Dupont that somebody painted red, white and blue like the flag in about 1969? From: Walt Cygan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Minneapolis Issues List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Mpls] What is missing? Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 18:18:54 -0600 For a lighter side topic: I have lived in Minneapolis for 24 years after growing up in Chicago.. (snip) Additions??? What does this say about how things have changed? My husband and I both grew up in Minneapolis. There are many things about growing up here in the sixties and seventies that are good to be nostalgic about. However, there are things that still need changing around here to make things better. Let me make a short list of things that need our attention: - The school system - Housing - Transportation - Jobs How many of us remember the percentage of children that are homeless and/or go hungry in the Twin Cities each and every day? How many children do not even graduate from our High Schools? How many of us suffer from inadequate or overly expensive housing in our tight housing market? How many of us hold down two, three or four jobs per two parent households to make ends meet? Just a thought, not intending to be a spoil-sport.
