send-hooks a la Pine Roles.
Hi all! A co-worker stated the other day that the biggest feature that has kept him from switching from Pine to mutt is the fact that pine supports roles. From what I could gather, a role in pine basically allows you to set your From: email address depending on who the message you're replying to was _addressed_ to. Everytime I ask this question (off the list, in #mutt on IRC for example), people respond quickly by saying this can be done with a send-hook. To give a specific example: an email comes in to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I want to reply to it as [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of my personal address. The suggestions I've heard say to do something like: send-hook \ '~t [EMAIL PROTECTED]' \ 'my_hdr From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]' Which doesn't work, because the ~t criteria looks at the headers of the outgoing message I'm composing, rather than the original inbound message. And since I'm not composing the message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], this hook doesn't work. I'm wondering whether there's a good way to do this, or if it's even possible to use '~' variables but based on the headers from the original inbound message, and not from the outbound message. I'm assuming that this is a feature that is hardly ever used, since it's not been implemented. Would it be handy to anyone? -- Adrian Chung Software Engineer e-smith, Inc. send-hooks not reset
Hi! I figured out how to set things up so that now I can properly reply to different people based on the original inbound email address. But I ran into a strange occurrence, which I'm not sure is my fault. I've set up mutt so that: set reverse_name set from="Adrian Chung [EMAIL PROTECTED]" alternates="(support|achung)@mycompany\.(com|net|org)" send-hook '~f support@mycompany' 'my_hdr From: company support [EMAIL PROTECTED]' send-hook '~f support@mycompany' 'set signature=~/.signature-support' This works properly, so that if email comes in addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I hit reply, or reply-all, I get the proper outgoing From: header, and signature. The problem is, when I finish composing that message, and then attempt to compose a new message, by pressing 'c', and then typing in a random address, I still get the From: header and signature from above. No, I don't have any such conflict. However, I think that there may be some problems (yet another bug?!) with generic macro definitions. Try instead: macro index \eu "resend-messagef=sentmailenter" macro pager \eu "resend-messagef=sentmailenter" macro attach \eu "resend-messagef=sentmailenter" No, that didn't solve the problem, unfortunately. Since you can use any muttrc command in send-hooks, it would be unworkably complex to try to limit the scope to that message only. It's something you just have to be aware of when working send-hooks, that for every hook that you use, if you want to have a default value, you must set it yourself with a "send-hook . whatever". mutt cyrus IMAP problem (folders)
Hello All, My users convinced me to go to IMAP for the mail system verses using sendmail/local mailboxes/POP. They swore up and down that the old command line junkies like me would not be effected. So I let them implement cyrus IMAP. I can get to my inbox ( {localhost:143}INBOX ) but I can not get to any of my 50+ folders. Originally they were standard folders in my homedirectory but they were converted over to cyrus IMAP folders. Well when I do a "c" to change folders I see 1 IMAP +INBOX. 2 IMAP user. 3 IMAP +INBOX. 4 IMAP +user. and not my folders. If I select number 1 I can see my folder names but I can not see the mail. 2 IMAP +6-degrees. 3 IMAP +APM. 4 IMAP +Apple-Press. 5 IMAP +CERT-Advisory. 6 IMAP +DBI-Users. 7 IMAP +Debian-Laptop. 8 IMAP +Debian-Security. 9 IMAP +Debian-User-Digest. ... then when I select 3 for instance, I see 1 IMAP ../ what am I doing wrong? is it a .muttrc config problem? a cyrus problem? or am I just outa luck? Viewing application/msword thingies.
Hi! I'm getting a lot af mail with *.doc files attached, and I'd like to use catdoc to show them in mutt, how do I do that? I have the line: application/msword; catdoc -s iso8859-1 %s|less; cupiousoutput in my ~/.mutt_mailcap, and an autoview antry for it in my ~/.muttrc, and I still can't get the autoview thing to work, why? I have to 'v' and then select the entry I wanna see. The mail come from Outlook, so they are attached in a strange way, so that might be it, here's an example how it looks when I 'v' a mail: I 1 no description [text/plain, 7bit, iso-8859-1, 0.1K] I 2 Pressemeddelelse om Salm. typh.DT104, mu [message/rfc822, 7bit, 29K] I 3 mqno description[multipa/mixed, 7bit, 29K] I 4 tqno description [text/plain, quoted,iso-8859-1, 0.2K] A 5 mqPressemeddelelse den 23. oktober 2000.do[applica/msword, base64, I 6 VS: Telefonpasning og pakkepost [message/rfc822, 7bit, 28K] I 7 mqno description [multipa/mixed, 7bit, 28K] I 8 tqno description [text/plain, quoted, iso-8859-1, 0.4K] A 9 mqTelefonpasning.doc [applica/msword, base64, 27K] I10 Telefonpasning og pakkepost [message/rfc822, 7bit, 0.6K] I11 mqno description [text/plain, quoted, iso-8859-1, 0.1K] I12 Besked til omstillingen [message/rfc822, 7bit, 0.8K] I13 mqno description [text/plain, quoted, iso-8859-1, 0.3K] I14 Møde for HK klubben 2. november [message/rfc822, 7bit, 29K] I15 mqno description [multipa/mixed, 7bit, 27K] I16 tqno description [text/plain, quoted, iso-8859-1, 0.5K] A17 mq=?iso-8859-1?Q?HKklm=F8de=2Edoc? [applica/msword, base64, 26K] Note: some thing got a little garbled in the cut'n paste, but you get the picture. I can highlight the msword entries, and they are shown bu catdoc, but I'd like that to happen automagically, hence the autoview in my ~~/.muttrc. How? I set the charset catdoc uses to iso8859-1, but I will output letters with umlauts instead of the danish æ, ø and å, how is that fixed? Changing the MUA at work is simply impossible. Ben Reser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on Tue, 24 Oct 2000: Depends on what you're using the resend feature for. If you're resending a message that you already sent it should already be in your Fcc and what's the point of adding it again? True, but in that case you can delete the Fcc from the compose menu. The point is that apparently the intuitive thing is to expect that every outgoing message is saved to the =sent folder (or whatever $record has), unless you explicitly clear the Fcc header. It can be a nasty surprise to find this isn't so for the resent messages. And conversely, adding an extra Fcc only copies one extra message to the sent folder, which usually is much less of a nuisance. You can delete extra messages, but you can't re-create something that got never saved. It is largely a user preference whether they want to keep an outgoing copy of every message they sent, or just each unique message they send. The headers in the two emails will be slightly different, at least, so some people may prefer to keep both copies. It should also be noted that resend-message is meant for situations where you want to use the original email as a base for the new email, but do want to alter it. If you want to send the exact same message, you're better off using the b(ounce) command. (Which, BTW, *does* add a new copy of the message to the Fcc folder...) Since the new message is likely going to be different from the old message in some way, it makes sense to store a copy of that too. Frankly, I think it'd make more sense to make a templates setup. Like a reply with template. You could specify a template mailbox and then select a message from the template mailbox that would be used as the default reply. etc etc etc I don't see how that is any different from what resend-message provides, actually?
