[NetBehaviour] #kulturlandretten
Dear Netbehaviourists, Some of you may still remember the difficulties we had in Austria starting in the year 2000, when the conservative People's Party joined forces with the far-right "Freedom Party" to form the disastrous "black-blue government". Since our elections in October, we are now facing a disheartening reprise of this situation, as the People's Party, now re-branded as a "movement" with the symbolic color turquois, is negotiating with the far-right "Freedom Party" to form a coalition government at the federal level. In Upper Austria we are already dealing with a "black-blue government" at the provincial level, which is proposing massive funding cuts in the areas of social service and especially arts and culture. We have a campaign going to put pressure on the governor to resist the destructive impulses from the far right, and now information about this campaign is available in English: https://kulturlandretten.at/en/ These proposed cuts threaten to wipe out especially small initiatives in rural regions, which are already just scraping by mostly through self-exploitation and voluntary efforts, but they could also lead to the closure of important independent organizations and venues in Linz. More than 14,000 people have already signed our petition, and now we would be very grateful for international support as well. Re: [NetBehaviour] A History of the Power of GAFAM
Dear Ruth, It is so lovely to hear from you. Thank you for reading and watching and for your kind words. How are you doing now? One of the reasons why I returned to Linz (which I didn't write about in my blog) is that my sister-in-law, Peter's sister Moni, had a heart attack last year, which was very close and very scary. She was still struggling with the effects of that when her husband was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor. He managed to survive 12 hours of surgery, and he has been responding well to chemo, but his life expectancy is severely limited now. I came back to be with Moni, because while she puts on a brave face for everyone else, she can talk to me honestly about her fears and worries. So when I ask how you are doing now, it's not meant to be a trivial or superficial question. But all the well-wishes coming through the list now are a moving tribute to you and Marc and the community you have brought together. I hope you feel surrounded by love. And if you would like to chat, please just let me know. I have my own BBB space and a laptop to use it now. Sending you good energy from Austria, Aileen P.S. Speaking of well-wishes, this is a song from Christopher's pandemic EP, which ends with well-wishes in over 30 languages, including four or five voices from Calafou: https://selbstlaut.bandcamp.com/track/kin-ft-elias-hirschl-selbstlaut-elias-hirschl-are-ein-gespenst Wishing you and Marc all of them. Dear Marc, All sympathy and good wishes from me too. I hope the hospitals and health care are not too overwhelmed, so that you can receive all the attention and care you need. It will take about three weeks to set it all up, and then visiting the hospital every day for six weeks with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, ugh! I am officially on sick leave for the next three months regarding Furtherfield matters, but I will pop up (hopefully) every now and then with certain projects that are underway - especially the new book which is out very soon, called 'Frankenstein Reanimated: Art & Life in the 21st Century. [NetBehaviour] Invitation to join a conversation
Dear Netbehaviourists, Some of you have already received this invitation individually, but I would like to send it again through the list, because it is unlikely that I have email addresses in my private archives for everyone who could contribute to this conversation. Soon after I returned to Linz at the end of last summer, Davide, Onur and I (the working group for this section of AMRO) started enthusiastically discussing what we wanted to do with the idea of "Hosting with the Others", and Manu Luksch has been sending us valuable input as well. But then, well, life happened and a lot of things had to be put on hold. Nevertheless, we still do really want to have this conversation, and we would be very happy to have more people join in. I would be happy to hear from more Netbehaviourists, Aileen --- Dear people, First of all, I apologize for sending out a general email to many people, rather than writing to each of you individually, especially if we haven't been in contact for a long time or you can't remember who I am or why I have your email address. It's mostly a question of time ... As I hope you may have all heard by now, AMRO22 - Arts Meets Radical Openness - will take place in a few weeks, from 15 to 18 June, in Linz: https://art-meets.radical-openness.org One section of AMRO will be devoted to "Hosting with the Others". This conversation will involve art and cultural associations with an affinity for current topics of the information society, open source technologies and current developments in media and Internet art. These initiatives can be described as "art servers" or "cultural data centers" or "feminist servers", which manage an independent Internet infrastructure for their own community of artists and cultural workers. And through that very same infrastructure they investigate the aesthetic, social and political aspects of the Internet. Originally we wanted to start this conversation months ago and present at least preliminary insights at a panel discussion. Since that didn't work out (for all the many reasons things don't always work out now), our Plan B is to start the conversation at AMRO and continue on a dedicated mailing list. AMRO22 wants to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas about the practices of art hosting and cultural providers such as the ones managed by many of the members of the festival community. In a dedicated session, representatives of various experiences of art servers will be invited to a conversation to identify common traits between the various experiences and how needs and practices change over the years. In this conversation we want to include experiences from the past with the art servers and community platforms from the late 1990s and early 2000s as well as newer initiatives. If you are interested in sharing your thoughts and experiences, we invite you to join the mailing list: https://lists.servus.at/ mailman/listinfo/hwto-lists.servus.at Please feel free to share this invitation with others you think might be interested. Re: [NetBehaviour] Mastodon
Welcome to Mastodon, Marc and all the others who have joined recently. Since I've been following everyone who has posted their address here, I'm @ader...@post.lurk.org Thanks for starting this thread, Marc. When I started reading, I was reminded of writing for the Furtherfield blog in 2007 about my first experiences with social media at that time, which expanded when I started following Charles Hutchins around the Internet, which I have continued doing for fifteen years now, which is how I ended up on Mastodon in 2018. Over the years, though, I have also followed you across so many different social media platforms, which ultimately ended up becoming disappointing. And so we keep returning to this mailing list - thanks for that! What I like about Mastodon is the feeling that there is no pressure to keep up with everything all the time. When I feel like checking Mastadon, I usually end up having enjoyable exchanges about whatever random posts happen to show up at that moment, but I'm not tempted to start doomscrolling and I don't feel I'm missing out on something else. I'm also primarily responsible for the account for the collective where I live now (@willyfredh...@social.servus.at), so there I have made a point of following other collectives and community initiatives. I enjoy how different that account is from my personal one. Recently I also made an account on Systerserver (@ail...@systerserver.town), because I would like to become more involved there. I don't want to cross-post, though, so I am still figuring out how the two accounts are different. So off we go on the next experiment, but still with the reassurance that this list keeps going, no matter what other platforms do or don't do.
