Uhm... on my box (with Mandrake 9.0) only xsane and the gimp plug-in need sane... anyway; I had to compile from source even them to make my scanner works... I still have kooka installed from rpm, and not working; xscanimage, compiled from tar.gz, does. Elsewere I saw reccomendation to uninstall rpms; I must say I didn't! :-) I realized just later I previously reinstalled rpms, but I didn't remember! So, I still have sane-backends from rpm... Sane and xsane are located in my home directory and working very well :) Smiley Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

TIA if you can Steve First, I must say I run Linux on a different machine, now; anyway I found out just recently some little more to do during tarballs installation... Here what I did, after extrating sane files, my choice in my home directory ./configure -enable-parport-directio -enable-translations make make install ldconfig moved down in /tools directory then typed ./umax_pp -p -t 1 the device was detected; so I installed sane-frontends and xsane from tarballs, the usual way; edit umax_pp.conf (port0x378 and option astra 1220) and dll.conf (added umax_pp); then ran xsane umax:0x378 (or xscanimage umax_pp:0x378) as said, it works as superuser only... Thanks, I did it yet, but I can only get the scanner detected going in tools sane directory and typing ./umax_pp -p -t 1 But still the frontends are saying no sane device found. Strange. I hooked up a older scanjet and used Kooka to run it as a user. It didn't find it the first time I ran it but worked on the second try.
