Hello everyone,

thank you very much for your contributing to this interesting discussion. Am
sorry for not joining the discussion much earlier.
Brief history:
In my Introduction to software engineering (ISE) lessons we had a lecture on
Software Requirement Specifications (SRS). In this course we were introduced
to Open Source Software (OSS) and how it works and asked to make a contribution
as part of our course work. It happened that i have been using Notepad++ for
sometime now and it is open source so i decided to write and contribute this
SRS.
The discussion here tells me that OSS is a complicated environment (in licensing
terms) and i have a lot to learn. Pshute, Bravo! i realized that most of the
brilliant OSS developers never had or boast of so call university degrees, they
just make good software for all to benefit!
About the SRS document. I wrote it according to a template we were given. I
found the following sources very useful in writing the different sections;
Notepad++
website (which i must say is very comprehensive and useful for Notepad++ users),
the wiki at wikipedia, readme files, etc. However, its not perfect and i intend
to be refining it as time goes on so that we Notepad++ will have additional
material to use.

Fidvo and donho and Pshute: you are right about the usages of the term
Freeware.
Having done a bit of reading and asking, i learnt that the ideological debate
sorrounding Free, Open, Libre is never ending. Fidvo and donho; should
i go ahead with replacing the term freeware with Free Software? if this suits
all in the project that's fine by me. Pshute thanks a lot for spotting some
of the errors.

I will implement your suggestions and upload a new version. I previously
uploaded
the document using the tracker. Now i have seen many options to upload the SRS.
I will upload the new version at Documentation Submit. Is that Ok?
Thanks a lot for taking your time to read and comment on the document.

I don't know how to sum this up into a subject. I'd like to know if it
spossible
to do a few actions against text, a list of text actuall.

I have a list of sites. and I get a new list of sites, I'd like to remove list
a from list b, not neccessarily that they are in order either, I just want to
find any and all

How can I minimize notepad++ window?
Currently I use 4.6 version. Is this feature implemented in future releases?
I would like to use SHIFT+ESC combination, but I can't find how it can
be customized.

Although I'm just working on some .c and .h files consuming about 100KB on disk
in total, np++ memory consumption sometimes peaks up to 700MB.
This happens only if I work with split view and function list open, changing
from one view to another. It does not always happen, but at least after some
hours of work. If this happens np++ is blocked and my system slows down. After
waiting a while, the memory load goes down to about 200MB and np++ becomes
responsive
again. If I shut down np++ after this, the memory load peaks up again and np++
is ended with this error:
MS Visual C++ Runtime Error: abnormal program termination nd R6025 -pure
virtual function call

I use the current version 4.7.5 with winXP and I tried out Function List Plugin
v1.2 final and Function List Plugin v2.0 ALPHA.

Is this a known bug? If not tread this as a bug report. Otherwise please give
a workaround.

Thanks.

CHARm (or possibly CharM): That's kind of catchy (or, dare I say it? CHARming!
Okay, I know. Bad pun). Not only does it stand for Character Map, but with
a little stretch of the imagination you can think of it as putting a charm on
the selected text, magically transforming it into something else. Okay, so
it takes a BIG stretch of the imagination.

Unfortunately, it suffers from the same problem as some of the other names.
It stands for Character Map, but the transformations aren't necessarily limited
to single characters.

CHARli: Not quite as catchy as CHARm.

CHARt: A little misleading, because it has nothing to do with charts, and would
preclude anyone using the name in the future if they design a plugin that does
have something to do with charts.

ChImp: Good for a laugh, but it's not really importing characters, but
transforming
or inserting them.

I'm not entirely satisfied with Substitution either, but it does at least have
the advantage of not implying that only single characters can be transformed.

I'll think about it for one more day. I still might go with CharM, because
the original purpose of the plugin is, after all, to be used like the Windows
Character Map. Whatever I decide to call it, I should be ready to upload it
tomorrow night.

While that would work well in this case it wouldn't be so easy to select lines
5000 to 12501. It would be nice if you could use multi-view to select the start
in one pane and the end in the other. A Select mode could help too, enabling
you to select the start then find the end by any kind of navigation, then
closing
the section.

A workaround would be to copy the file, then use the control+G technique to
delete everything above and then below the desired text, then just select it
all with control+A.

I'll search for this eariler message but are you suggesting that I search for
each entry? If so that wouldn't be that more effictive than doing it by hand
if you have a large (say 2000+) and potientially every entry is possible to
be duplicated.

should i go ahead with replacing the term freeware with Free Software?

That would be my suggestion. It's clear, accurate, and precise to those to
whom it matters, and although some people might mistake the term Free Software
for Freeware, those people are ones for whom the distinction doesn't matter,
namely people who just want a free text editor and don't care about making any
modifications to its source code.

I now know how to remove duplicate lines but not compare and subtract from
lists.
I do have a file compare program which should help me but I could combine lists
and just search for duplicates.

It was too complicatedly explained and took way too much to find so I'll try
to tell the simplified way here.

If you don't care about the order of your lists (list as in words or sentences
on seperate lines I haven't tested if it works on single line lists) then it
is a simple matter to get rid of duplicates:

Highlight everything go to the TextFX Select TextFX Tool, make sure that Sort
outputs only UNIQUE (at colum) lines The go back to that menu and at the top
select sort case insensitive or case sensitive it doesn't matter.

If you do care about the order of your list its a bit more complicated.

Select all of your text, Go to TextFX Select TextFX Tools, Select the option
insert line numbers. At this point every line will now have a number added
to the beginning the good thing is this is of a uniformed length with a space
added so you can use the next step.

Using the Colum select (alt + ctrl held down before and while selecting) select
only your text, not the line numbers. Now Back to TextFX,TextFX tools and make
sure sort only outputs unique at colume is selected. After that go back to
TextFX,TextFX Tools, and sort either sort option you'd like.

Now you have a unique list but its not in your original order.

Using colum sort again select only the line numbers (from the top to the bottom,
get them all) and then use a TextFX Tool's sort again. This will put it back
in order minus the lines deleted for being duplicates. Now you can select your
entire document and use the TextFX Tool's Delete line number or first word
feature
to remove the line numbers or you can colum select the numbers and the added
space and delete it.

Is there any way to key on the statement do while as the open keyword for
code folding?

Right now I am just using the do for the open keyword and enddo for the
close keyword. But this messes up the regular DO program statement which
is different from the DO WHILE statement.

Any thoughts?

I'm sorry, I have not found a way to subtract list B from list A. The only
thing I found was removing duplicates. This will work for me for now since
I would eventually combine linst A and list B, its just that I would have to
do more work for the combining process than if I could just subtract.

For subtracting I haven't tried but you could try ordering your list in notepad
++ (not sorting with only unique) and saving the files and comareing them in
winmerge. That would show you the differences in the file. From there you
could select orphans of either file and copy them to a thrid file.

I haven't tested that but I don't know why it wouldn't work, its more
complicated
than one action but at least its done with all free tools.

Just tried the v4.8 RC (2008-02-6) using my configuration from v4.75. The
standard
shortcut for Paste (Shift+Ins) doesn't work for me (pasting by mouse does work
though). Notepad++ v4.75 works flawless to that regard. Tested on WinXP Pro
SP2 (all updates).
