[Nssbackup-team] [Announcement] Final version Simple Backup 0.11.0 released
I'm proud to announce the first release 0.11.0 of the 0.11 series of the Simple Backup suite. Thanks to all who contributed to this release with coding, sending patches, testing, reporting bugs and translating! Series 0.11.x finally replaces the old-fashioned Simple Backup 0.10.5 with code that was developed in (Not So) Simple Backup in the meantime. It adds some very interesting features and is ready for daily use. Most notable enhancements are: * fixes many, partly long standing, bugs * implementation of a status application which presents information of running backups such as backup size, progress and estimated remaining time * implementation of a GIO/GVFS backend for access of remote targets (currently supported is FTP, SFTP, SSH, NFS). The backend to use can be controlled by a GConf setting (see https://answers.launchpad.net/nssbackup/+faq/1256) * notification window in case of not found backup destination: you can directly retry to use the specified destination, after mounting an external disk (good for creation of backups stored on external disks that might not be plugged in) See the changelog on the download page for more information. Known issues - There are a few known issues in SBackup 0.11.0: * Logarithmic purge is disabled * specified log directories are not modified when using former nssbackup configurations. This might lead to directories named `.../nssbackup`. * in order to use secure remote targets (SFTP, SSH via GIO) you'll have to add the remote machine to your trusted machines first (see https://answers.launchpad.net/nssbackup/+faq/1255) * due to default security settings it is not possible to create backups at remote destinations which are split into several chunks when running as superuser (root) using the GIO backend * when upgrading snapshots in old Simple Backup format (1.4 and older) it is not recommended to use these as base for successive snapshots. Make a full snapshot instead. * No Help available on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy (due to use of Mallard) * if you want to install nssbackup from source code after you've had already installed it from PPA, you need to *Purge* the package (i.e. remove package and configuration files, not only remove) to avoid confusion of your packaging software about configuration files in system directories (namely /etc/dbus-1/system.d) Have fun. Changelog: * [Fix] LP #618730: Merge sbackup and nssbackup (see enclosed file nssbackup.ChangeLop for further information) * [Fix] LP #604558: 'abort backup' on exernal drives not possible * [Fix] LP #412934: sbackup/nssbackup fails if exclude-path contains an equal-sign * [Fix] LP #277137: crashed with NoSpaceError: No space left on device * [Fix] LP #328902: Spelling and wording errors * [Fix] LP #130856: Show remaining time till backup is finished in UI * [Fix] LP #267759: Simple Backup should display a progress bar * [Fix] LP #137293: empty dialog when restoring with sbackup * [Fix] LP #176838: Incremental backups should not appear incremental when restoring * [Fix] LP #254464: Password for SSH Do Not URI Encode * [Fix] LP #489107: sbackup crahses: stop_if_no_target is not an option in general * [Fix] LP #504990: Mb used instead of MB in the application dialogs * [Fix] LP #507175: libgnomevfs2-extra required for FTP backups * [Fix] LP #310306: Error: no space left * [Fix] LP #383383: restore crashes when the destination path or file is non existent * [Fix] LP #331551: Wrong original English text in sbackup po-file * [Fix] LP #585769: default backup directory doesn't exist in ubuntu * translations updated signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team Post to : nssbackup-team@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Nssbackup-team] [Bug 622496] Re: problem occurs if nssbackup is run with the destination drive not present. It looses the config info.
Thank you for using nssbackup and reporting this issue. I cannot confirm your described behavior. nssbackup works as follows: start the configuration, plug in your external harddrive and specify a directory on the external drive as backup destination. Save your configuration. When running a backup (scheduled or manual), it is checked for the presence of your custom backup destination and used. If the external disk (or whatever is specified) is not found, a message box appears which states: Destination not found. Please make sure the path exists (e.g. by mounting external disk). You can retry or cancel You can now plug in your external disk and proceed or the backup is canceled after 300 sec if you do nothing. I think this is what you expect, isn't it? Slightly different when opening the configuration. If you open the configuration again, without the external drive being present, another error message is showed: Destination path not found. It is set to the default value. Check the value before you save your configuration. That is, the destination value is not saved to disk/modified on disk unless you save your configuration again. Closing the configuration without saving will result in no modification of your previous configuration/specified destination. Purpose of this behavior is not to support a non-existing destination path when modifying the configuration. The user is forced to set the destination to an existing path when he/she sets up a backup. Does it work for you in this way? What I see here, is maybe a feature request. The error message (or choices) that are shown when opening the configuration while the destination is unavailable could be improved. A problem might arise when starting the configuration gui just for running a backup and not for modifying settings. P.S: As you might recognized, nssbackup and SBackup are finally re- merged. SBackup 0.11.x is identical with nssbackup 0.3.x. Development will take place in SBackup (to stop confusion) from now. So, you're invited to use SBackup from now. [Nssbackup-team] [Fwd: Re: Logarithmic purge disabled]
Weitergeleitete Nachricht Von: Jean-Peer Lorenz peer@gmx.net An: Anton Feenstra feens...@few.vu.nl Betreff: Re: Logarithmic purge disabled Datum: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 10:54:16 +0200 Good morning Anton, Thank you for looking into SBackup and your bug tracking. Another maintainer able to fix minor flaws would be great. Software maintenance is really time consuming. I'm sorry to tell you, that I've already fixed the purge issue. I'll prepare an updated release within the next days. I've re-implemented it similar to the simple purge: only freestanding snapshots are removed and the removal process is repeated until no freestanding snapshot or at least 1 snapshot remain (within a certain period). The more I think about rebasing of snapshots, the more I dislike the whole idea. It is always dangerous to modify backuped data, even more if it stored in 'foreign' formats (here tar). Moreover, the current implementation of writing TAR snapshot files (snar files) contains errors and updating tarballs in only possible for uncompressed tars. So, I consider to cut rebasing completely. But that's another story... I don't get why it becomes so expensive? Because of the current implementation. Each path that is processed is compared to every stored path in sequential manner. Regards, Jean-Peer Am Montag, den 23.08.2010, 09:37 +0200 schrieb Anton Feenstra: Hi Jean-Peer, I'm considering what how to implement. It seems the rebase operations, although a nice idea, quickly become too costly. As an alternative, I'm considering changing the purge logic to purge incremental snapshots only when their base (full) snapshot is scheduled to purge as well. This is the easy part. More tricky is that we do not want to purge a full (base) snapshot when any of its incremental (child) snapshots should be retained (though I'm not sure when exactly this condition could apply). I'm thinking now on how to implement this (will come back on that). I think it would be best to add a config option for this, like: - purge incremental snapshots individually by re-basing (may be slow) *or* - purge incremental shapshots together with their base (full) snapshot As a sidenote, I think I understand the basic logic of the rebasing, however I don't get why it becomes so expensive? signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team Post to : nssbackup-team@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Did this happen every time you've tried to make an incremental backup? What kind of FTP server are you running (is it NAS with FTP access, an old machine running a FTP server,...)? Are you able to reproduce the error? [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 638188] [NEW] Inconsistent behavior (error message or choices) when opening config gui while destination is unavailable
Public bug reported: What I see here, is maybe a feature request. The error message (or choices) that are shown when opening the configuration while the destination is unavailable could be improved. A problem might arise when starting the configuration gui just for running a backup and not for modifying settings. ** Affects: sbackup Importance: Wishlist Status: Confirmed ** Description changed: + What I see here, is maybe a feature request. [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 71698] Re: Old backups are not deleted (log purge)
(ns)sbackup does not purge incremental backups (in the latest version) is not totally right: logarithmic purge works in SBackup 0.11+, however the fix is not yet ported to nssbackup 0.3 (and I'm not sure it ever will). See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/nssbackup/+bug/587911 to track progress made on this. The rest said by Anton is basically right: snapshots get only purged (logarithmic plan or simple cut-off) in the case they are _standalone_ (i.e. other snapshots do not depend on them). Purpose is to keep incremental and full snapshots consistent. Rebasing of incremental snapshots as in nssbackup before 0.2.0 is completely dropped since it is a severe risk to the backuped data. Version SBackup 0.11 introduced a slight modification of the logarithmic purge plan: * keep all from yesterday * keep one per day from last week * keep one per week from last month * keep one per month from last year * keep one per quarter from 2nd last year * keep one per year further into past Read 'keep one' as 'keep at least one'. @dik23: making a full backup every 30 days means purging of snapshots will be possible not before 30 days after the first snapshot because every snapshot in your archive relies on the other (except the latest but this one is also kept because it's the latest ;-) until you create another full snapshot. Ok, so I'll set it to invalid. Thanks for your help and for using Simple Backup. P.S.S.: if you have mostly pictures on your shared drive, you should really try to save uncompressed snapshots. Recent file formats are quiete effective and it could speed up your backup significantly. Re: [Nssbackup-team] [Question #122507]: re-merged ?
Question #122507 on nssbackup changed: https://answers.launchpad.net/nssbackup/+question/122507 Jean-Peer Lorenz proposed the following answer: Hello Robert, please follow these steps: 1. translate your error message into english 'ans an error message: Erreur critique: Aucun fichier de configuration trouvé pour le profile par défaut.' and post it 2. open Synaptic package manager and search for 'nssbackup' and *purge* (i.e. remove it including configuration) all related packages 3. repeat step 2 for 'sbackup': *purge* all sbackup related packages 4. Open menu item 'Preferences - Repositories' in Synaptic and remove all entries related to nssbackup PPA 5. if you've manually modified your sources.list, undo all of your changes related to nssbackup/sbackup. There is no need to mess around with configuration files in Ubuntu 10.04 in order to add a PPA. You can do it using the GUI (and you should use the GUI unless you really know what you're doing ;-) 6. Close the repositories dialog and reload your packages list within Synaptic. At this time, neither nssbackup nor sbackup should be installed on your machine. Plus, you should only find sbackup 0.10.5 (this is the version included in Ubuntu Lucid's universe) when looking for it. 7. You can now add our PPA https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup- team/+archive/ppa to your repositories: open the repositories dialog again. Select tab 'Other software' and just add the following line 'ppa :nssbackup-team/ppa', press ok and then reload your packages list within Synaptic. 8. You should now find sbackup 0.11.x in Synaptic. 9. Install it (sbackup and sbackup-gtk) and check/set configurations according to your need in sbackup gui. 10. In the case you are paranoid and/or don't trust the Simple Backup Maintainers you can disable the source in the repositories dialog. Though you'll not receive automatic updates from this source then. Re: [Nssbackup-team] [Question #122507]: re-merged ?
Question #122507 on nssbackup changed: https://answers.launchpad.net/nssbackup/+question/122507 Jean-Peer Lorenz proposed the following answer: Hi, what should I do to add the source? You don't need it. If you want the source code of simple backup just go to https://launchpad.net/sbackup/+download There, you can download tarballs containing the source that you can extract into a directory of your choice and inspect the code. my translation is: No configuration file found for default profile This mean no backup can be created because there is no configuration file present. The purge step removed it (however, purge is always preferable over remove when reinstalling software because it really removes everything of the old package). You'll have to set up a configuration before you can make a backup. installed, but there I find no menu entry for sbackup Well, this'd be really weird. SBackup installs menu entries under: * Applications - Accessories (start it from here a normal user without root privileges, does not support scheduled backups) * Applications - System tools (start it from here a root user, enables scheduled backups). In case there is no menu entry 'Applications-System tools' it could be required to enable this submenu under 'System - Settings - Main menu'. Does invokation from the command line using 'sbackup-config-gtk' resp. 'gksu sbackup-config-gtk' work? Please answer the following questions: * what distribution do you use? * what version of sbackup is installed; from where was it installed (PPA, from source)? * Is the bug reproducible; does it happen every time? * do you run sbackup as superuser (root) or as regular user? * Do backups work in general for you? * Do manual backups (started from Configuration GUI) work as expected? * are you able to open your backup destination using Nautilus/command line? * How do you invoke the backup process? [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 659020] Re: Cannot install upgrade or remove sbackup-gtk after upgrading to maverick
There are usually two reasons for this error: * the cached directory is empty - caused by icons pack uninstall removing files but leaving directory in place *directory is not empty but the icons are not in subfolders named WIDTHxHEIGHT (icon dimensions). Please check the theme folder /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark. Did you installed any icons manually? [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 655362] Re: wrong categories in .desktop-files (sbackup-gtk)
Thank you for using SBackup and for taking the time reporting this bug. The described behaviour is intentional: SBackup is not related to any System settings. Therefore System - Administration is not the right place for it. Since 0.11 SBackup launchers are located under Applications - Utilities for regular users and Applications - System tools when running it with root privileges according with Gnome recommendations. ** Changed in: sbackup Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Simple Backup Maintainers, which is subscribed to Simple Backup. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/655362 Title: wrong categories in .desktop-files (sbackup-gtk) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team Post to : nssbackup-team@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Nssbackup-team] [Question #139526]: unable to choose hidden dirs in /home to exclude
New question #139526 on Simple Backup: https://answers.launchpad.net/sbackup/+question/139526 In this i want NOT to save my data from the directory .VirtualBox cause i do not need those virtual machines saved. Normally i choose the complete home-directory to save and pick those dirs that i don't need (downloads, dropbox, ..) But in the dialog 'not to save' i can only select normal files or directorys - no hidden directorys; so my backup goes real big with some virtual machines in it. Next problem ist, with some snapshot from those virtual machines and a bit of working with it, the incremental updates also goes real BIG...
