[NTG-context] TeXexec MkII, ConTeXt MkIV
Hello, I have pretty recent installations of TeXLive 2010 (for Cygwin) and ConTeXt Minimals (for Windows). In both installations, running TeXexec reports it is ConTeXt MkII ... but running ConTeXt directly reports itself as MkIV. I would like to synchronize TeXexec and MkIV ... as MkIV ... how is this done -- for each installation? ConTeXt MkII is the collection of context maros that work with pdftex and xetex engine. ConTeXt MkIV is the collection of context macros that work with luatex engine. texexec is a ruby wrapper to run ConTeXt macros. context is a lua wrapper to run ConTeXt macros. Both wrappers can run either any engine texexec --pdftex texexec --xetex texexec --luatex or context --pdftex context --xetex context --luatex Just that texexec defaults to --pdftex while context defaults to --luatex I would like to synchronize TeXexec and MkIV ... as MkIV ... how is this done -- for each installation? The above options should work with both TL and minimals. we had this pretty old thread about sorting in indexes. AFAICS, the latest beta
defaults to cases-sensitive sorting. Two quick questions:
1. Is there a setup command that will make index sorting case-insensitive? The
code above doesn't work anymore, so maybe you made it user-configurable now?
2. Is it really a good idea to make case-sensitive sorting the default in
English? I can't remember seeing a single academic book in English that has
this sort of index sorting.

texnically I could catch comments but it's not worth the effort (and
slowdown)

Give me a chance to understand :-) I tried looking in sort-ini.lua, but I
couldn't figure out what the different methods meant. What do the abbreviations
stand for? Also, I seem to obtain the desired case-insensitive sorting with
method=zm,pc,uc
but I also get spurious empty lines in the index. I'll try and come up with a
minimal example.

Hmm, if this is easy to configure, it doesn't make much of a difference. Just
as a default, for English and German, I would suggest having no
case-sensitivity. In German, umlauts are somewhat contentious, but nowadays,
most people would sort them just like normal letters. But this is something
that others on the list or on the wiki should express their opinion on.

I run into some problem with font handling in MKIV so I'm stuck in MKII for
some time.
I've tried the following :

In MKII, I get a Missing number error.
I've isolated the problem : the value given to the \chapterprefix by the
pagecommand option seems to be a text value and not a numeral value.
I've tried to find a function to translate text to number but I've not find it.
I hope to get some help.

Your \ChapterPrefix works out of the box with mkiv. Eventually it's easier to
solve the problems you have with mkiv, than dividing the page number by 4 in
mkii? I don't know...

Give me a chance to understand :-) I tried looking in sort-ini.lua, but I
couldn't figure out what the different methods meant. What do the abbreviations
stand for? Also, I seem to obtain the desired case-insensitive sorting with
method=zm,pc,uc
but I also get spurious empty lines in the index. I'll try and come up with a
minimal example.
mm zm pm : use mapping order, add -1,0, +1 to different case and use
shape info for missing entries (similar shapes)
mc zc pc : use mapping order, add -1,0, +1 to different case
uc: unicode order
so, you define a sequence of comparisons where for instance
U - order u +/- 1

2. Is it really a good idea to make case-sensitive sorting the default in
English? I can't remember seeing a single academic book in English that has
this sort of index sorting.
Currently Jano and I are figuring out some details (as Jano does the testing
with more complex multilingual indices).
I have no preferece ... we can configure each language independently using the
method key in the entries in sort-lan.lua As I seldom consult an index I have
no clue what to expect or default to so feel free to tell me what the defaults
should be. We now have predefined:

Hmm, if this is easy to configure, it doesn't make much of a difference. Just
as a default, for English and German, I would suggest having no
case-sensitivity. In German, umlauts are somewhat contentious, but nowadays,
most people would sort them just like normal letters. But this is something
that others on the list or on the wiki should express their opinion on.
best would be to have a test file per language with in comments the
expected order; such tests should also provide foreign entries
for instance, how would you mix german and greek in your books; we
probably need some specialized vectors then, which is possible as the
sorting language can be configured independent from the text language

For mixtures with foreign languages, there might not be generally accepted rules at all, so people will define something on an ad-hoc basis. For Greek: I just looked at a dozen books here on my shelf. Most English books have a separate index for Greek terms; when they sort Greek terms with English words, they use transliteration. The problem with polytonic Greek is that so many different unicode characters need to have the same sort entry. If I ever see the necessity of setting this up, I'll be in touch off-list, but it's such an unusual thing that I think you shouldn't bother now. Hi, Just a note: the node-freeing bug that showed up in the lettrine module has been solved (it took taco and me a while to nail down the exact circumstances and location in the luatex source -- it had to do with some broken linked list prev chain). As the solution is in the binary (catching it in mkiv does not make much sense) the fix will be there when the minimals use the next beta of luatex (unless you compile yourself). I hereby announce the next ConTeXt meeting, that will take place on the island of Porquerolles off the coast of the French Riviera, from Monday, September 19th, 2011, to Saturday, September 24th. The conference venue has been pre-booked for these dates, so this is firm. Of course, there is yet nothing like a set program at this moment, so we're expecting your proposals (there will be a formal call for papers later). Hello Hans and Wolfgang, Hans: Thanks for your reply. No, simply setting up the grid does not work. Because of the size of Arabic fonts relative to latin fonts, the Arabic paragraph naturally needs a bit more interlinear spacing; as such, I do not expect the paragraph to lineup on the grid (effectively, I am happy to treat it like one would a graphic or math equation). But in the English paragraph which follows, I would like the English paragraph to be realigned on the grid. BUT: it seems that Wolfgang's suggestion works well! (At least with my minimal example, which I've attached below). Thank you both so much. Amazing. I cannot express how impressed I am with ConTeXt at the moment, and how what used to require so much hacking in LaTeX (which I never could have come up with), and so many myriad packages, is all largely done from within ConTeXt itself! My last hurdle for shifting my work into ConTeXt remains the issue of the features needed for critical editions--most importantly the ability to key lemmas to line numbers; but that will be left to a dedicated email. I did the update process via rsync and chosed the beta. Afterwards followed the update of luatex and the commands luatools --generate and context --make. [NTG-context] present state of critical editions with ConTeXt MKIV ?
Dear all, My apologies for flooding the mailing list as I try to come up to speed quickly with some of the perhaps more arcane usages of ConTeXt over the weekend. I have come to understand that ConTeXt MKIV can indeed produce beautiful critical editions (including those of Arabic texts). I've spent some time scouring the mailing list and wiki with things related to critical editions and Arabic (from the early 2000's until now), including the developing CitTeXt project. However, I have some questions. From my (nascent) experiences and readings regarding critically editing texts, the following appear to be necessary tasks for any typesetting software used to produce critical texts [1] (I have placed an + next to those features which seem to already be implemented in MKIV, and a '?' next to those which I am unsure) : 1. Marginal line numbers + 2. Keying lemmas to linenumbers ? Footnote streams where the lemmas are referenced in connection with the line numbers (and thus not by puting a footnote reference number in the body of the text after the variant). I.e., functionality similar to ednotes or Ledmac in LaTeX. From what I've read, it seems this might remain the most problematic matter currently. 3. Formatting the lemma footnote streams in paragraph/block form OR in columnar form ? This mailing list provided direction to using \setupnote[footnote][n=x], where if x=0 makes the footnotes into a single paragraph, and if x=2 or more than 2 or more columns appear. I am unclear, due to my relative inexperience with ConTeXt, whether this is deemed robust enough as part of the solution of keying lemmas to linenumbers (#2 above). 4. Lemma abbreviations ? When the lemma is rather long, it should be displayed partially only preceding the note at the bottom of the page 5. Nested or overlapping lemmas ? 6. Cross references to lines ? 7. Line number switches+ I.e. being able to turn line numbering on and off, restart, etc. 8. Multiple footnote streams + 9. Parallel typesetting? I.e. It seems this was last recently discussed on this list in August 2010, and I assume it is naturally still in development, as these matters surely take time. Thus, the main issues seemingly remaining are related to lemmas. Issues number 2 to 5 are my main concern at the moment. Any advice on currently effecting these and other matters with a '?' after them (or being told that it is currently impossible) would be most appreciated. Alternatively, it would be nice just to know where things stand. Dear Hans and Wolfgang (et al), Unfortunately, I think I may have spoken too soon, as I've run into a small problem. :-) Using Wolfgang's suggestion of baselinecorrection: \startbaselinecorrection\setupinterlinespace[line=5ex] ... \stopbaselinecorrection I can no longer get footnotes which are in the Arabic paragraph to work. The footnote marker in the text shows up; but that particular footnote does not show at the bottom of the page, though a footnote from text outside of that paragraph do show, with their correct numbering. I would never even think that something like

would work.
I didn't need the width= parameter (in fact I wanted to have a
narrower formula, so I'm glad that this worked ...).
Related to your second suggestion (I still like formula for some
reason) ... do you have any idea why the spacing around formula is
broken? If I use \startTEXpage[width=...] or when I draw a frame
around formula the spacing is OK, only in this example it seems as if
formula was infinitely thin. A bug?

It was produced using LaTeX and Uwe Lück's excellent ednotes package. Of course, I couldn't produce an example of parallel texts, because to the best of my knowledge there is no robust system for that anywhere (my definition of 'robust' means it can handle RtL languages, like Arabic, as easily as ConTeXt does).
