It's the same with table of contents hyperlink jumps. Quite annoying because
lots of people are used to the behavior of word/openoffice generated pdfs.

Now have to get those fonts rendered correctly with luatex...

Hi,

I get different results when I compile the following file using mkii and

  p.1 := z.1 -- z.2 ;
  p.2 := z.3 -- z.4 ;

OK, OK, you win :-) I'll try and see if I can cook up some remap +

Re: [NTG-context] table of contents and bookmarks issue

2008-07-07 Thread Alan Stone
Got fed up with context/xetex... Compiled with
texmfstart texexec --lua instead and as expected
(from a previous thread) bookmarks are scrambled
when using accented (french) characters.

Hope this (luatex) issue will be resolved very soon.

Thanks for the backward compatibility though. Didn't
have to change a single line of code.

Hyperlink/bookmark jumps are a better, however...

Can they be made so that they go to and include
the corresponding chapter/section title, instead of
jumping underneath them when in "single page
continuous + page width" mode ? It works that
way with word/openoffice generated pdfs.

Thanks on beforehand,
Alan

I have converted from Word to LaTeX a lot! -- book length
documents. I usually find it easier to manually do the
conversion: 1) adding commands and inter-paragraph
spacing in the word file where I can still see the visual
formatting; 2) cut and paste the text from the Word file
into WinEdt or EMACS, and 3) use the text editor's
global replace feature to convert en-dashes into --,
smart quotes into `` and '', etc. I have occasionally
whipped together a small editor macro to do repetitive
tasks during the conversion. I find that this
approach takes less time (or at least less mental
anguish) than learning a conversion program and then
fixing its output. If have always thought that I
might find a conversion program useful if my documents included
much math (they don't) -- until someone else in this thread
suggested that the conversion program didn't work so well
for the math. My approach noted above is in the context
having used a couple of different conversion programs in
the past -- one freeware and one commercial. Of course,
I have been writing, debugging, and rewriting computer
programs for decades, so tweaking things with a text
editor feels like a pretty natural approach to me.

Did you visit the homepage
http://kebrt.webz.cz/programs/word-to-latex/ to check the
prerequisites? I tried it out for somebody else, and with word,
mathtype and net1.1 installed it did quite a nice job.

It is basically a Word macro, even though you can call it from
outside Word (which is not recommended).

I use writer2latex, which has to be integrated into OpenOffice; when it's
done, just open your word (or ODF) document with OpenOffice and export to LaTeX;
does a good job if you choose the «clean» or better, «ultraclean» option.

I had once tried TeX2Word from chiriii software (http://www.chikrii.com/)
and converted a 20 page double column paper with a lot of math from Word
to LaTeX. The conversion was excellent. I had to redo most of the math by
hand, but I think that it was more because of the way the math was
originally input (array instead of align, etc).

I upload a doc file into Open Office Writer, save it as rtf and then
run the program rtf2latex2e. The reult isn't perfect but it gives
you a starting point.

Other conversion tools found with e.g., Kword, Abiword etc. don't seem
to work as well.

For client work I just save the doc or pdf as text and start from
there. The Adobe Acrobat Reader has a good text save function.

OK, acknowledged. However, this is a special case because:

- it is not a language feature, it is just something for a special
sort of ancient Greek texts (the subdot accent doesn't exist in Greek);

- the character is available in just a few fonts, so my idea was to
really write a macro which will specifically fetch the glyph from a
specific font.

So for the time being, the specs are (for my module)

~ => inactive (already done in the module)
| => inactive (already done in the module)
! => active, map to Unicode character 0323 in a font that has this
character

Thanks Hans!

All best

[NTG-context] table of contents and bookmarks issue

2008-07-07 Thread Alan Stone
Hi,

When compiling the same source but with different compiler options...

(1) compiled with texmfstart texexec --autopdf --pdf test.tex

(2) compiled with texmfstart texexec --xtx test.tex or
texmfstart texexec --xetex test.tex

All hyperlinks ( table of contents and bookmarks ) jump to the
correct position for (1).

For (2), in all other view modes, single or a combined, other than
"single page view", like for ex. "single page continuous + fit width"
mode, the hyperlinks jump to the incorrect position, mostly the
page before or after the one whereto it should jump to. Any idea how
to prevent this behavior when compiling with xetex ?

Thanks,
Alan

forget about the past, think about what kind of functionality you want

for instance,

"we need a language dependent feature that remaps characters"

so, what are the specs; maybe other languages need similar things

(there is already something available which we can easily extend)

[NTG-context] active characters in mkiv (and mkii)

2008-07-07 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz
Hi all,

I would like to make the exclamation mark active within my Greek
environment; it should remain a normal letter outside of these
commands and environments. (Why? Exclamation marks aren't used in
Greek, and in mkii, I had mapped it to the sublinear dot which is used
for epigraphical and papyrological texts.)

In pdf(e)tex, Hans wrote this macro for me:

\long\def\rescanwithsetup#1#2%
{{\directsetup{#1}\scantokens{#2\ignorespaces}}}

but I'm not sure how to have a similar thing for mkiv (and ! is
special anyway, so I'm running into trouble here...). Any pointers? Or
is this a bad idea, and I should look for other solutions?

Thanks

Dear list,

Has anyone had any success running Word-to-Latex converter, mentioned on
contextgarden, on linux? In theory it should be possible using wine and
winetricks.

\startuseMpgraphic{letter:head}
...
\stopuseMPgraphic

\setupletterstyle
  [head] % [frame]
  [background=\useMPgraphic{letter:head}]

for a MetaPost graphic in the background of the head.

You could also create your own letter head with:

\startsetups{letter:head}
...
\stopsetups

this replace my default letter head with fromname and fromaddress,
to access these to values you could use \lettervalue{fromname} and
\lettervalue{fromaddress}.

Wolfgang

is there a cont-en.fmt file in there

if so, then there is a problem in the variables (no engine path or just
a wrong definition in texmf.cnf; if so, then the tex installation is
pretty ancient)

[NTG-context] Custom letter head

2008-07-07 Thread Oliver Buerschaper
Dear Wolfgang,

I was wondering how I could place a simple MetaPost graphic into the
head area of a letter, next to the address data. I know the manual
says you're going to write this and similar things up soon … could you
still give me a sneak peek as where to look at and what to modify? All
I need is a quick adaption that works for now …

Many thanks,

in texmf.cnf

texinputs.context

you can set that variable in your shell/cmd (make sure that you copy the
current definition and add you extra paths to it)

See
 http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/modules/t-tikz/
and
a) use rsync -av
rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/current/modules/t-tikz/
path/to/texmf-context
b) beat me for not implementing (or bribing Hans) it in mtx-update yet

Aditya suggested to add --all switch to mtx-update to simplify
matters. We also have
http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/modules/all/ (just a hint
for Hans).
