That is probably what I would do. But if that was too error-prone,

Personally, I find api-based data interfaces clumsy and at least as

[NTG-context] How to get the total page number at startup in luatex?

2008-12-08 Thread Zhichu Chen
Hi,

I've met a weird thing, I can't get \totalnumberofpages in the preamble.
But it used to work.

A simple test file is
++
\dorecurse{\totalnumberofpages}{\setvalue{test::\recurselevel}{:\recurselevel:}}
\def\test{\getvalue{test::\pagenumber}}
\starttext
\input knuth
\page[yes]
\input knuth
\page[yes]
This should be \quotation{:\pagenumber:}, but it's \quotation{\test}
\stoptext

Any suggestions about how to do that? I wanna define each page a macro.

[NTG-context] Sorting references

2008-12-08 Thread Jean Magnan de Bornier
Hi all,
Using the bib module, I want my references to be sorted alphabetically; if
I understood correctly the doc:

\setuppublications[alternative=apa-fr,sorttype=bbl,criterium=cite]

Then the alphabetical order is taken from the bibtex *keys*, and it
doesn't always follows true alphabetical order... :-(

And it seems that with bbl the whole bbl content is necessarily written in
references.

How can I do to have only cited material included in references?

TIA,

[NTG-context] modernized and augmented m-r.tex

2008-12-08 Thread Johan Sandblom
The ConTeXt module for interaction with the statistical programming
language R currently does not work with MKIV since buffers are not
saved to file. The included file fixes this by calling \savebuffer on
the buffer in case \ctxlua is defined (a trick gleaned from a
discussion on the LilyPond module a while back).

Also, all calls to R used to include a rather annoying proc.time()
statement at the end, and a modified R call has fixed this. PATH must
contain R or R.exe on Windoze. Should 'texmfstart' still be used for
the R calls?

A third modification involves being able to call \startRnoecho (which
only echoes R output in the ConTeXt file) in addition to \startR
(which echoes both input and output) and \startRhidden (which echoes
nothing, useful for generating graphics)

One further improvement would be to collect the R snippets and run
them all at once. That would significantly reduce processing time
since the R startup is on the order of a few seconds. However, that is
beyond my knowledge of ConTeXt.

\endgraf is just an alias for \par. There are some places where \par
is prohibited by TeX's parser but in such cases \endgraf is still
allowed. The prohibition helps to catch runaway definitions (because an
empty line is equal to a \par commnad).

[NTG-context] report: non-stretchable spaces after periods

2008-12-08 Thread Alan Bowen
In a message some time ago, Wolfgang suggested that

\def\ {\thinspace}

would serve to get non-expanding or non-stretchable spaces after
periods that occur within sentences and in bibliographies. When I
discovered that, while this worked well in limited contexts, in a
lengthy bibliography which relied on the period as the main form of
punctuation it lead quickly to numerous line-breaking problems. So
Wolfgang has now has kindly proposed

\def\ {\hskip.1666em\relax}

since \hskip is a TeX primitve and mentioned in every (plain) TeX
manual.

And I gratefully confirm that this works very well.

Yes it is interesting doing it this way, the latex people do it the

that puts evaluated R code instead, run this file through LaTex and
voila. But if there is no requirement for elegance I am sure there are
ways to do it this way as well, some trickery with comments perhaps or

Sorry for not replying to your earlier message.

If enable the colouring in cite commands in macros.tex I get;

\setupcite  [interaction=start, compress=no,color=darkgreen]

The current bib module does not support changing the color of links. The
color=darkgreen was a local change that I did in my copy of t-bib. So,
color=darkgreen should just be silently ignored. However, compress=no
does affect the output of the \cite command but I do not understand why
it changes things like like Aumann and Hart (...) instead of (Aumann and
Hard, ... ).

Can you try to create a minimal example just using the bib module
specific setups?

* Bibliography. For a large part, the bib module was very easy. In the
end, there were a few glitches with the formatting of the bibliography
(too title space between entries) which I had to manually correct. (Look
for \help inside the bbl file).

  The bbl file sorted authors with multiple entries incorrectly. If I
had
authors with four publications in a year, say 2000, the came out as
2000d,

2000c, 2000b, 2000a. I wanted 2000a, 2000b, 2000c, and 2000d, so in the
end I just edited the bbl file by hand.

  There was also problem with maybe year. If I had 2000a and 2000b in
the

bib file, but only referred to 2000b in the thesis, the year came out as
2000b rather than 2000. For this also, I edited the bbl file by hand.

Overall, ConTeXt made writing the thesis fairly easy. I mean the
typesetting part of it. For those who are wondering, ConTeXt does not
help
with the content of the thesis :-) I would like to thank Hans and

providing ConTeXt and everyone on the mailing list for answering my

An error like this usually means that luatex or mtxrun is old.

I am using context version version: 2008.11.10 21:40 (hmmm... that is
after a fresh update from the minimals, which is strange) and LuaTeX,

I do not know if something broke in a newer version of context, but for
that I will first need to figure out why my minimals are not being
updated.

Since I was at it, I redid the local change in t-bib so that I can have
citations of different colors. Also changed a few other macros, to work
well with colors (I had stopped playing with colors a while back ...). I
am uploading the changed files and the typeset pdf file at

Try to download and compile this and see if it works. In the mean time I
will investigate why minimals aren't being updated on my machine.

Context minimals are fine. I did not notice before that context-beta was
last updated on 2008.11.10. That is almost a month!!! I updated to the
latest alpha and there is a bug. If I comment \placeabbreviations in

Hans, there is a bug in the sorting code. Minimal example:

%
\abbreviation  {ABC} {Alpha Beta Company}

\starttext
\placelistofabbreviations
We use \abc.
\stoptext
%=

context version: 2008.12.01 10:25
LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.31.0-2008120715, build unknown

This gives the error that Mohamed reported above.

No the citations aren't working.

Am I the only one who thinks ConTeXt needs a extensive set of regression
tests?

Adiyta, you shouldn't have hard-coded:

./frontmatter.tex:\startcolor[darkred]\titlefont \hskip 1.5em Chapters
\stopcolor}

Changing L191 env-thesis.tex, has no effect, such as:

\setuplist [chapter][color=darkblue]
\setuplist [Title]  [color=darkblue]

Chapters still comes out as darkred.

No. We have discussed this extensively in the past. There is also a
context-test svn repository with a script that can automatically check if
the pdf output changed with different version. However, it has been dormat
for about a year now. For more info see

Yeah, I know. This was just a quick change, so I did not bother with
elegance. The proper way of doing it would be to define a titlecolor
and use that.

[NTG-context] texexec ignores file order

exexec --pdfarrange --result=yujo_insurance.pdf yujo_insurance1.pdf
yujo_insurance2.pdf yujo_insurance3.pdf yujo_insurance4.pdf yujo_insurance5.pdf
yujo_insurance6.pdf yujo_insurance7.pdf yujo_insurance8.pdf yujo_insurance9.pdf
yujo_insurance10.pdf yujo_insurance11.pdf yujo_insurance12.pdf

After upgrading recently, I found that texexec no longer preserves the order of
files passed to it. When I concatenate files with texexec, I often have more
than 10 files I want to pass to texexec names filename1.pdf, filename2.pdf, ...
filename12.pdf, etc. In the past, the following has worked to concatenate these
in the correct order:

texexec --pdfarrange --result=filename.pdf `ls -a -v filename*.pdf`

Now, even if I pass filename10.pdf after filename2.pdf on the command line,
texexec ingores this and puts filename10.pdf before filename2.pdf in the
resulting concatenated file.

Is there a fix for this, or is there a better way to concatenate pdf files?

If you just want to concat files, you can use pdftk
