[NTG-context] Can I use 'extend' and 'slant' in \definefontfamily to create fake italics etc.?

2023-06-16 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
Libertinus Sans does not have Bold Italic. With this, I come close in ConTeXt:

\definefontfeature [fakeitalic] [slant=0.25]
\definefontfamily
  [archimate]
  [ss]
  [Libertinus Sans]
  [rscale=1.0395]
  [tf=style:Regular,
   bf=style:Bold,
   it=style:Italic,
   bi={style:Bold,features:fakeitalic}]

It is slightly 'thicker' and the lowercases have a somewhat lower height
percentage of the uppercases than Optima, but this is the closest I have come.

[NTG-context] Off topic: Does a 'free for commercial use' flared-sans font exist in the world?

2023-06-16 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I know this is off topic, but I suspect this community is actually one of the
best places to find an answer.

I really like Optima, and what I really like about it is the 'flared style'.

But I would like to move to a flared-sans font that gives me more licensing
freedom. I haven't been able to find one after extensive searching. The only
one who were reasonably priced (not free) were the URW Classico ones in Adobe
Creative Cloud, but those can only be used in Adobe programs like InDesign (and
not TeX).

I found some flared-sans fonts, but not one with at least regular, italic,
bold, and bold-italic.

Is there really not a single flared-sans font that is really free (so also for
commercial use) to use out there?

[NTG-context] Using the open source Cabin font

I've been trying to use the open source Cabin font

[NTG-context] Chinese typesetting with macOS font. Which one is a good choice?

2023-06-02 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
For Japanese I currently use

\startsetups [japanese]
  \setscript [nihongo]
\stopsetups
\setuplanguage [ja] [setups=japanese]
\definefallbackfamily
  [archimate]
  [ss]
  [Hiragino Sans]
  [preset=range:japanese,
   tf=style:W3,
   it=style:W3,
   bf=style:W5,
   bi=style:W5,
   force=yes]
\definefontfamily [archimate] [ss] [Optima]
\setupbodyfont[archimate]

I've been wondering what a good choice is for Chinese which is to be added to
my project. Hiragino Sans GB has both Japanese and Chinese but only W3,W6

I have no knowledge of what is elegant in these fonts. Can someone advise me?

3500 lines of METAPOST/Metafun to produce the graphics).

[NTG-context] Probably simple: using a variable for \switchtobodyfont size

2023-05-19 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I want to use a variable for a font size so I can set it based on language (as
some translated texts have widely different sizes)

This fails:

%===
\newdimen\relationsFontSize
\relationsFontSize=8pt
\starttext
\switchtobodyfont[\relationsFontSize]
Hello, world!
\stoptext
%===

How can I use a variable to steer \switchtobodyfont size?

[NTG-context] \placeinitial doesn't work inside \framedtext (or \framed)

2023-05-16 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I did a simple thing, replace a \framed by \framedtext to get \placeinitial
working but that doesn't seem to work automatically:

%==
\starttext
\setupinitial[n=2,text=Knuth]\placeinitial\input knuth

\framed[align=flushleft]{\setupinitial[n=2,text=Knuth]\placeinitial\input knuth
}

\framedtext[align=flushleft]{\setupinitial[n=2,text=Knuth]\placeinitial\input
knuth }

\stoptext
%==

Is there a way I can get a working \placeinitial inside a \framed or \frametext?

Re: [NTG-context] Flushright problems with Japanese

2023-05-16 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
That does not make a difference.

Output of both lines

\framed[width=\textwidth,frame=off,align=flushright]{作図:A bit of text}
\framed[width=\textwidth,frame=off,align=flushright,broad]{作図:A bit of text}

is identical.

[NTG-context] \placeinitial inside \framed?

2023-05-15 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I'd like to use a drop cap inside a \framed, but it doesn't work.

Minimal example:

%==
\starttext
\setupinitial[n=2,text=Knuth]\placeinitial\input knuth

\framed[align=flushleft]{\setupinitial[n=2,text=Knuth]\placeinitial\input knuth
}
\stoptext
%==

The first drop cap works, the second is empty.

Thank you.

How do I change that in my setup?

My setup is creating the same stuff in different languages from XML input (LMTX
using lua and METAPOST), which means I need to adapt the following setup
(cyrillic and greek shown as the other languages with different character sets
I use)

\startmode[JA]
\setuplanguage[ja][patterns={ja}]\mainlanguage[ja]
\stopmode

\definefallbackfamily
  [archimate]
  [ss]
  [Helvetica]
  [preset=range:cyrillic,
   tf=style:light,
   it=style:lightoblique,
   bf=style:regular,
   bi=style:oblique,
   force=yes,
   rscale=1.0]
 \definefallbackfamily
  [archimate]
  [ss]
  [Helvetica]
  [preset=range:greek,
   tf=style:light,
   it=style:lightoblique,
   bf=style:regular,
   bi=style:oblique,
   force=yes]
\definefallbackfamily
  [archimate]
  [ss]
  [Hiragino Sans]
  [preset=range:japanese,
   tf=style:W3,
   it=style:W3,
   bf=style:W5,
   bi=style:W5,
   force=yes]

\definefontfamily [archimate] [ss] [Optima]

\setupbodyfont[archimate]

\starttext

lua code creates METAPOST code which creates images with embedded ConTeXt
'vboxes' which again contain language-setting ConTeXt code for each piece of
text.

[NTG-context] Linebreaking in Japanese in ConTeXt

2023-04-30 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I am currently testing with a Japanese translation of something I originally
created in English using the ConTeXt engine (LMTX).

I run into the fact that Japanese has no use for whitespace, so most of the
time TeX has no idea where to break. Is there something I can tell ConTeXt to
solve this for me or do I have to alk with the translator to put whitespace in
the correct places (kind of breaks the automatic linebreaking of TeX, though)?

Re: [NTG-context] Getting started with Japanese

2022-07-09 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context

Answering myself on Japanese, this actually works out of the box:

\setuplanguage[ja][patterns={ja}]\mainlanguage[ja]

 \definefallbackfamily
  [archimate]
  [ss]
  [Hiragino Sans]
  [preset=range:japanese,
   tf=style:W3,
   it=style:W3,
   bf=style:W5,
   bi=style:W5,
   force=yes]

\definefontfamily [archimate] [ss] [Optima]

\setupbodyfont[archimate]

\starttext
Some text. 他のテキスト\\
\stoptext

I have no idea why this works and if stuff is missing because more is needed
than just the above. Of course the translation of italics into weights is
nonsense, in Japanese that would probably mean using quite different characters
(katakana?)

Am I missing something?

[NTG-context] Getting started with Japanese

2022-07-09 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I’d like to experiment a bit with typesetting Japanese in ConTeXt (LMTX), to
see if it is doable.

I tried looking for Japanese on ConTeXtgarden, but did not find anything.

Can someone point me to instructions to get started with Japanese in LMTX (on
macOS).

Aha. ‘EL’ is the official two-letter language code for the Greek language, so I
assumed this was the language code as well.

So, what do I use for (modern) Greek?

This works for EN, RU, but not for EL. When I run with “—mode=EL” I get EN.
Why? I am either blind or something is wrong.

[NTG-context] Can I simplify this to some sort of logic so it scales better?

2022-06-06 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I have this:

\definemode[EN,FR,RU,PT][keep]
\doifmodeelse{EN}
  {
\disablemode[FR]
\disablemode[RU]
\disablemode[PT]
  }
  {
\doifmodeelse{FR}
{
  \disablemode[EN]
  \disablemode[RU]
  \disablemode[PT]
}
{
  \doifmodeelse{RU}
  {
\disablemode[EN]
\disablemode[FR]
\disablemode[PT]
  }
  {
\doifmodeelse{PT}
{
  \disablemode[EN]
  \disablemode[FR]
  \disablemode[RU]
}
{
  \enablemode[EN]
}
  }
}
  }

But for every language added this becomes more and more complex. I was
wondering what would be a good approach to simplify it.

I want to make sure that one and only one of these modes is active and that if
no mode is entered on the command line the mode is EN.

[NTG-context] Typesetting modern Greek (UTF8) with ConTeXt

For Russian I have:

\setuplanguage[ru][patterns={ru}]\mainlanguage[ru]
\definefallbackfamily

   bi=style:oblique,
   force=yes,
 rscale=1.0]
\definefontfamily [archimate] [ss] [Optima]
\setupbodyfont[archimate]

I can’t find out from ConTeXtgarden what code I must use for modern Greek
(‘el’?) and what range I must use for Greek characters (I guess
‘greekandcoptic’ which I’ve seen mentioned somewhere).

Correct?

I cannot always provide a minimal example (how much I would like to) as my TeX
is produced in a pipeline from 5600 lines of lua and METAPOST code.

But luckily, in this case I can, the one using \phrasetext is indented, the
other one is not.:

\setuplanguage[en][patterns={en}]\mainlanguage[en]

\definelabelclass[phrase]

\setupphrasetext[en][metamodelexplanation= {Only direct relations are shown.
Abstract elements are expanded so only real metamodel elements are shown. Uses

\definelayer[coremodel][width=\textwidth,height=\textheight]
\setlayer[coremodel][preset=lefttop,voffset=0.6cm]{\framed[frame=off,align=flushleft,width=\textwidth]{\phrasetext{metamodelexplanation}}}
\setlayer[coremodel][preset=lefttop,voffset=6cm]{\framed[frame=off,align=flushleft,width=\textwidth]{Only

[NTG-context] How do I turn off indentation inside a \framed with align=?

2022-05-19 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I have these kinds of statements

\framed[frame=off,align=flushleft,width=\textwidth]{\phrasetext{metamodelexplanation}}

but the text inside the frame is typeset with indentation.

I tried \setupindenting both before and after \starttext, (none,no,never) but
that doesn’t work.

How do I turn indenting off in all frameds with align=flushleft or otherwise
*everywhere*?

Thanks. It seems that the last part has a {}-issue. \enablemode[EN] is always
wxecuted if on the commandline only FR or RU is set

\definemode[EN,FR,RU][keep]
\doifmodeelse{EN}
  {
\disablemode[FR]
\disablemode[RU]
  }
  {
\doifmodeelse{FR}
{
  \disablemode[EN]
  \disablemode[RU]
}
{
  \doifmodeelse{RU}
  {
\disablemode[EN]
\disablemode[FR]
  }
}
{
  \enablemode[EN]
}
  }

I am now using

\doifmodeelse{EN}
  {
\disablemode[FR]
\disablemode[RU]
  }
  {
\doifmodeelse{FR}
{
  \disablemode[EN]
  \disablemode[RU]
}
{
  \doifmodeelse{RU}
  {
\disablemode[EN]
\disablemode[FR]
  }
  {
\enablemode[EN]
  }
}
  }

Thanks, but how do I influence this from the command line? Does it work the
other way around, so with “—mode=en”?

[NTG-context] Does \startnotallmodes work?

2022-05-10 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
Example. Call with

context —mode=FR

- Uncomment the first commented lines. Compilation fails because mode FR is on
so that works

But I get English anyway. Uncomment the second commented part and it fails, but
it should not because mode=EN is not turned on.

[NTG-context] Can I use language as a mode (set on the command line) and simplify this?

2022-05-10 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I currently have:

\startnotallmodes[FR,RU]% english is the default
\enablemode[EN]
\stopmode
\startmode[EN]
\setuplanguage[en][patterns={en}]
\setupexternalfigure[directory=../LMTX-Output/without-ids/en/ArchiMate 3.1
Metamodel ESv4]
\stopmode
\startmode[FR]
\setuplanguage[fr][patterns={en,fr}]
\setupexternalfigure[directory=../LMTX-Output/without-ids/fr/ArchiMate 3.1
Metamodel ESv4]
\stopmode
\startmode[RU]
\setuplanguage[ru][patterns={en,ru}]
\setupexternalfigure[directory=../LMTX-Output/without-ids/ru/ArchiMate 3.1
Metamodel ESv4]
\stopmode

I was wondering if this can be simplified, e.g. by setting language on the
command line instead, enable a mode derived from a language set on the command
line, and if I would have a single command \setupexternalfigure[directory= that
reacts to the language by using the name of the language as part of the
directory?

Re: [NTG-context] Simple question

2022-05-10 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
Thank you.

Is it possible to change the name of the resulting PDF file based on the
language and a mode?

So that with a command

context language=fr mode=simple file.tex

the result is in

file-simple-fr.pdf

and with

context language=ru mode=none file.tex (or no mode given)

the result is

file-ru.pdf

[NTG-context] Simple question

2022-05-09 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
What is the easiest way to have a ‘database’ of translations for strings and
maybe links?

I now have 4 languages and 2 versions so 8 documents, but I’d like to have all
translatable strings together so I can maintain these in a single file. Ideally
I can do a file where the key of the translation is one language (say English)
and the translations are part of that.

Something I can call like this

\translatephrase[English phrase][nl]
\translatelocation[../LMTX-Output/without-ids/en/file.pdf][nl][simple]

and where I can maintain all the translations a bit like this:

\translationentry[English phrase]{
\definetranslatephrase[nl]Nederlandse frase]
\definetranslatephrase[fr][Phrase français]
}
}

\translatelocation[../LMTX-Output/without-ids/en/file.pdf][simple][nl][../LMTX-Output/without-ids/nl/file-simple.pdf]]
\translatelocation[../LMTX-Output/without-ids/en/file.pdf][none][nl][../LMTX-Output/without-ids/nl/file.pdf]]

Where the \translatelocation command can be used inside an \externalfigure
command and \translatephrase can be used as as text.

In the end I’d like to compile with

context language=fr mode=simple mainfile.tex

Doable?

[NTG-context] Solved: Book setup with LHS-side quotes before chapters/parts, header/footer issues, TOC, etc.

2021-10-26 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
Thanks to Wolfgang Schuster and Bruce Horrocks I have now a working solution. I
ended up following Bruce’s suggestion of doing a left hand side (LHS) page
opposite the first (RHS) chapter or part page differently than using
after/before modifications of the \chapter and \part setups as I had been doing
years ago (but that book did not have parts and was done in mkii)

The modification of \chapter and \part setups with before= and after= never
worked in the \component setup in LMTX. Creating a separate command to run
immediately before a \chapter or \part, as suggested by Bruce, was simpler and
and turned out to be more robust. So, this single file example also works when
\components are used.

The only issues I have now left are very minimal. In the table of contents, the
abstract for a part has some extra whitespace above, which the chapter
abstracts don’t have. But that is not really a problem. And getting the part
title somewhere more centred on its page is also left as an issue for later.

Example file. In a project/component setup: everything before the \starttext
goes into the environment file, the rest in the product file.

[NTG-context] Move the page number from header to footer on the current page only?

2021-10-25 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I have a problem with getting the page number on the ‘first’ page of a chapter
(in my setup, it is actually the second page as there is a LHS page before it
with a quote. The bare minimum example:

\setuplayout[location=doublesided]
\setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided]

\setuphead[chapter]
  [page=,
   header=empty,
   footer=chpaterfooter,
   sectionsegments=chapter,
   before={\setups[chapter:before]}]

\startsetups chapter:before
\page[left]
\noheaderandfooterlines
\startalignment[left,nothyphenated]
\startnarrower[4*left]
\em \getbuffer[chapter:quote]
\stopnarrower
\stopalignment
\page[right]
\stopsetups

\starttext
\startbuffer [chapter:quote]
If you think good architecture is expensive, try bad architecture\crlf
{\tf Brian Foote and Joseph Yoder}
\stopbuffer

\chapter[h:one]{One}
\dorecurse{5}{\input tufte \par \input knuth}

\chapter[h:two]{Two}
\dorecurse{5}{\input tufte \par \input knuth}

\stoptext

What I think I need is a way to move the page number from header to footer for
just the current page (immediately after \page[right]) in this setup.

Or a way to move the page number from header to footer on any current page.

Yes, this works in a simple setup. But it doesn’t work in mine with my
LHS-quote/RHS-chapterstart setup using before and after on setup head.

Try this:

\setuplayout[location=doublesided]
\setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided]

\definetext
  [chapterfooter] % name
  [footer]% vertical location
  [pagenumber]% content

\setuphead[chapter]
  [page=,
   header=empty,
   footer=chpaterfooter,
   sectionsegments=chapter,
   before={\setups[chapter:before]},
   after={\setups[chapter:after]}]

\startsetups chapter:before
\page[left]
\noheaderandfooterlines
\startalignment[left,nothyphenated]
\startnarrower[4*left]
\em \getbuffer[chapter:quote]
\stopnarrower
\stopalignment
\resetsetups[quote:text]
\page[right]
\blank[force,2*big]
\stopsetups

\startsetups chapter:after
\blank[3*big]
\stopsetups

\definelist[chaptertext]
\setuplist[chaptertext][margin=1.3em,pagecommand=\gobbleoneargument]
\define[1]\ChapterAbstract{\writetolist[chaptertext]{}{\start\itx#1\stop}}

\starttext
\startbuffer [chapter:quote]
If you think good architecture is expensive, try bad architecture\crlf

\stopbuffer

\chapter[h:one]{One}
\ChapterAbstract{This is chapter abstract 1.}

\dorecurse{5}{\input tufte \par \input knuth}

\chapter[h:two]{Two}
\ChapterAbstract{This is chapter abstract 2.}

\dorecurse{5}{\input tufte \par \input knuth}

2021-10-24 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
I attempted this:

\page[right]
\setupheadertexts[]
\setupfootertexts[pagenumber]
\setupfooter[text][after={\setupfootertexts[]\setupheadertexts[pagenumber]}]

but that does not work. This definitely moves the page numbers to the footer.

[NTG-context] How do I get the first page of the chapter to display the page number in the footer in this setup?

2021-10-24 Thread Gerben Wierda via ntg-context
My double-sided layout starts each chapter on a right page with a quote on the
opposing left page. I’d like to move the page number of that right page to the
footer, but haven’t been able to find how to do this is the documentation. How
can I do this?

Example:

\setuplayout[location=doublesided]
\setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided]
\setuphead[chapter]
  [page=,
   sectionsegments=chapter,
   before={\setups[chapter:before]},
   after={\setups[chapter:after]}]

\startsetups chapter:before

\startnarrower[4*left]
\em \getbuffer[chapter:quote]
\stopnarrower
\stopalignment
\resetsetups[quote:text]
\page[right]
%\noheaderandfooterlines % I want the enumber in the footer here
\blank[force,2*big]
\stopsetups

\startsetups chapter:after
\blank[3*big]
\stopsetups

\definelist[chaptertext]
\setuplist[chaptertext][margin=1.3em,pagecommand=\gobbleoneargument]
\define[1]\ChapterAbstract{\writetolist[chaptertext]{}{\start\itx#1\stop}}

Ah, this is that one.

Apple is more strict security-wise and checks the entire chain. I’ve read about
more issues that stem from the expiry of that intermediate cert.

Yes. Thanks. But that leads to additional questions:
- how do I get the parts to show up in the table of contents? Because I tried
\part but it did not show up
- how do I let chapters number on (not restart in each part, and not a x.y
number but simply ‘2. Chapter’
- what is a good way to create actual RHS ‘title’ pages for each chapter?
- how do I get parts to number with Roman numerals?

Yes, the new \blackboard command works, so $\blackboard{Q}$ works. Thanks.

Feature request: make sure that the new \blackboard switches math mode on/off
if necessary. Not a big deal though. The fix is simple. Adding the info about
math mode might also be helpful here:

One thing I haven’t been able to find yet is how to use the blackboard font.

{\blackboard Q}
