[NTG-context] texexec slow

2009-04-23 Thread R. Bastian
Hi,

I am new on this list. I use pftex and would use ConTeXt installed with
texlive/2007.

'ruby' and 'pdftex' work fine, but 'texexec' (texexec.rb $@) is very slow.

Where con I get the doc or what shall I do ?

Thanks,

  Can you post the document and some logfile to the mailing list? It may
  happen that you run into some infinite loop with one of your macros.

 Please also describe what platform you work on. With luatex memory
 might also be an issue, but that's probably not the case with pdftex.

I tested 'texexec' on another computer (Kubuntu 7.10, TL2007, ruby 1.8.6) and
it works,
but I need it on [Debian 5.0, Gnome, ruby 1.8.7] where it fails.

 What's the time needed to run pdflatex on similar document size?

I dont know; 'first-setup.sh' erased the path to the format files ;-)
but 'pdflatex' was very clever. (I must reinstall 'texlive'.)

May be that ConTeXt is not a 'context free language' ;-)
than it will be difficult to express something in a BNF grammar
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backus-Naur_form.

But if (ConTeXt == formal_language), it should be possible to
develop TEXT, NUMBER, DIMENSION, REFERENCE, etc
and also to add examples for [optional user data].

 Consider that one can always make some dirty tricks in PREAMBLE to render
 useless
 \starttext
 or \stoptext

 To be general, i think
 MY_CONTEXT_SOURCE ::= MACRO* END

 For example , let's try
 $context test
 where
 test.tex ::=\end
 or
 test.tex ::=FOO\end

 Are there any errors ? No
 Is test.tex  in {CONTEXT_SOURCE } ? No
 Is test.tex in {MY_CONTEXT_SOURCE} Yes
 so MY_CONTEXT_SOURCE includes CONTEXT_SOURCE
 (of course
 test.tex ::=\end\starttext\stoptext is also in {CONTEXT_SOURCE }
 )

I dont understand the sense of \end\starttext (I am simply seeking a
layout system which works better than Latex).

 I think that a bnf or lpeg grammar is really useful for a sort of
 standard-ConTeXt
 or minimal-ConTeXt or light-ConTeXt
 ie a ConTeXt to use as reference

Exactly what I need : standard, minimal and light

 but can be a bit hard to define

 My suggestions to start :
 1) define a **simple but significative** domain ,ie this grammar is for
 subset of ConTeXt language dedicated to variable-data pdf forms

yes

 2) make a bnf grammar spec

yes

 3) build a parser lex/yacc for 2)

later

 4) make a lpeg grammar
 5) user lpeg inside context for 3)

 it was just a coincidence , but for other reasons I have found this link

   3) build a parser lex/yacc for 2)

  later

 why ? There is no difference between 2 and 3

True, but I think that the aim of such a BNF-grammar
is to help in a concise way the newbie and tell him _what_ can be
made and _when_ {\it in quel tempo}.

(In fact, I dont like lex/yacc because it seems not a good idea to
intervene on the generated code).

 I think a wiki would be a better forum than this mailing-list ?

 hmm
 this mailing-list is ok for this kind of discussions
 a wiki is wiki.contextgarden.net
 and you should put your results in your personal page

[NTG-context] MPgraphic

2009-05-05 Thread R. Bastian
Salut tout le monde,

I wrote

[...]
texte texte

\startMPgraphic
draw (0.0cm, 0.0cm) -- (1.1cm, 1.1cm) ;
\stopMPgraphic

[...]
-

The compilation works ; I get an EPS-file with suffixe mpgraph.2 (visible with
gv)
but there is nothing in the PDF.

I use the minimals from 23.04.09.

What is wrong ?

best regards,

René B.

Hi,

I would write a french german intro-source for (quasi absolute) newcomers
which need to have a working system producing PDF texts.

But I know nothing about ConTeXt. therefor I cant do anything without your help.
A first series of question:

-. For a newcommer, is Mk II the best choice ?

-. Is it necessary to know TeX ?

or Is ConTeXt (CTX) compatible with TeX ?

I wish to alternate french german texts (so they can be translated in
other languages).

 If you don't like metapost, you could take a look at TikZ. It's very
 similar to PStricks, more portable and extremely poverful.

Yes, I suppose the best is to make figures without any font.

In my case, the canvas concept of pyx is a very good tool to draw

  is there a way to insert plain tex code in context source ?
 Most of the plain TeX commands work in ConTeXt out of the box but
 ConTeXt’s own commands and environments are recommended.

 I converted the font you want to use into type1 format
 (http://drp.ly/1sFxdF),
 to use it you should use \definefont which scales the font to match the size
 of the normal text:

 \definefont[ttbold][file:cmbtt10]
 \starttext
 \tt text \ttbold text
 \stoptext

Many thanks! it works.

[NTG-context] section - classe

2010-08-03 Thread R. Bastian
Hello,

I use texexec (mk ii).

I use the following head definition:

\definehead[classe][section]
\setuphead[classe]
[style=type, textstyle=tfc, indentnext=yes, alternative=inmargin, align=broad]

The result is numbered, but the title of the section/classe does not appear in
the toc.

What is missing ?

In the Minimal tree there are many .afm, .tfm and other font files.
Is there a sort of font catalogue (visualization of the fonts) ?

The source of such a catalogue would be a good example for beginners - like me.

[NTG-context] font catalogue (re)

2010-08-05 Thread R. Bastian
Hello,

it is not a list of available fonts i need, but a catalogue where one can see
the typefaces.

In the Minimal directory there are 91 tfm files, 309 pfb files and 2043 thm
files.

Chap 31 'Fonts and font switches' of .. an excursion or
Sect 5.1.1 in '...the 'Manual' gives no example hwo to go from a tfm fil (say
tcxr.tfm)
to a usable font.

A possible test file of typefaces could be (for my use specimen.tex):

azertyu ...
AZERTY ...
äëÿuüïö ...
âêûîô ...
ÂÊÛÎÔ ...
ÄËŸÜ ...
'(-è_çà)

and the font file for making a PDF:
%
 how to go from TFM to 'normal'
%
\starttext
\input specimen
\stoptext

I hope this can help beginners.

 - TeXfont explained: http://pragma-ade.com/show-man-8.htm

 A overview over the fonts in the minimals would be nice but we should it
 keep then simple:

 - name of the font
 - short sample text
 - characater chart (limited to ascii and a few diacritics)
 - example how to use it in context
 (- for mkiv a list of the available features, there is a free symbol
 font from adobe for this)

 Wolfgang

Thanks Wolfgang.

I copied the PDFs and played with the rules given in showfont.pdf, using a very
short
sample text ( azert, capitals + the diacritics used in french german).

But I am not clear with the .map, .tfm etc.

[NTG-context] maths sansserif

2009-10-06 Thread R. Bastian
Hello,

i like the sansserif, 10 pt font. My texts are from time to time

[NTG-context] context MK IV // MK II

2009-10-07 Thread R. Bastian
Hello,

i downloaded and unzipped 'cont-tmf.zip'.

It seems that the manual http://www.pragma-ade.nl/general/manuals/minstall.pdf
concerns MK II (which I use).

Is it possible to install MK IV for studying it - and use MK II ?

Thanks,

 You need to make the context format. Try

 fmtutil-sys cont-en

r...@kubuntu64:~/Context$ fmtutil-sys cont-fr
fmtutil: fmtutil: unknown option `cont-fr'. Try fmtutil --help for help.

 Or, since you already have the xetex and the luatex formats, you can use

 context generic-talk*.tex

 or

 texexec --xetex generic-talk*.tex

r...@kubuntu64:~/Context$ texexec --xetex generic-talk*.tex
TeXExec | processing document 'generic-talk*.tex'
TeXExec | no ctx file found
TeXExec | nothing to process
TeXExec | runtime: 0.008959

I use mkII mnimals (from 2007, but installed 2009.05). I will
reinstall soon.

It is not a good idea to use no-languages (TeX, LaTeX friends) for
bibliography. Write the biblio and your source text
in your own format and use a true language
(Python, C, Pascal, Python, ...) to translate the brute source (with refs)
and the biblio base to a typesetter code (TeX or ConText).

The last days I had to edit Python-listings (my scores).
\starttyping ... \stoptyping. Fine! but there are no headers. But I need
headers. Not easy to understand \setupheads, \setupheaders \setupheader etc.
there are no examples given.

I re-tried reSt, asciidoc : ugly like Latex.

So I wrote a Python-script which reads the Python-score and writes a
plain tex file (merci Raymond Seroul et le Petit livre de TeX ;-).

Nevertheless, ConText beeing the best choice, I am volunteer to help
for _french_ (and german) wiki pages in the contextgarden.

  Nor does the 'documentation' at http://getfo.org/context_xml/page3.html ,

  More, the two pages seem pretty contradictory.

  Consider my situation: I'm trying to set up an A4 page with the following

  top: 2.97cm
  bottom: 2.97cm
  left: 2.1cm
  right: 2.1cm

  For the moment, I don't care at all about header and footer space, nor notes

  However, with all conceivable combinations of commands at both of those

  Based on the getfo.org page, I should be able to set up these left and right

 \setuplayout

topspace=2.97cm,

 texexec has --passon option, so you can do

 texexec --passon=--jobname=whatever file

 but this is not implemented in context. You can however, use

 context --result=whatever

 which renames the resultant files.

 Aditya

'context --result=whatever'
works.
Thanks.

 No, not like those. I mean like a real manual. I read the book
 about Hasselt---a few examples without explanations.
 I've looked at most of the fifty or so documents over which
 this virtual manual is supposed to be spread. They are about
 as informative. Most of these documents seem to be 5--12
 years old. The wiki is even more patchy. The idea that a
 computer manual is something that exists implicitly in the
 discussions of a mailing list is a new idea to me.

 You can't be serious about mk.pdf being a manual. Even it
 admits, This document is not so much a users manual as a
 history of the development. Little after that point is intelligible.

 Compared with the clear, abundant documentation of the
 LaTeX world, ...

LoL

I have a good meter of books about Latex. But Latex is 'congenitally'
unable to do what I want to obtain.

Within 6 months, with the Seroul book the Context Manual the help of
this list, I made more and better than in 10 years of Latex.

With Latex you must accept to do what Latex wants to be done. With
Context (and even with the older Tex), you are free (not free in an
denglish sense ('gratuit', 'kostenfrei'), but 'libre' or 'frei').

 Context seems like a secret that a small club is
 trying to keep. It's not even clear from the manuals that
 development is ongoing, much less that there is some advantage
 in using it.

 So, will there ever be a manual to MK IV? In how many years?

I think that the usersd need that the '[...,...,...]' should be replaced or
referenced by
lists of parameters and we need a wiki-glossary of the params.

So we need a wiki to which users can access. I tried to access t the
contextgarden, but my access was forbidden.

So it is true that Context is much more better than the way its access
is managed.

 No, this would be the equivalent of Inner margin / outer margin, I

  Hello,

  how to translate in context the following plain tex:

  \font\fgras = cmbtt10
  {\tt
  {\obeylines
  {\fgras def} ra():
  \ \ \ \ a = 3
  \ \ \ \ b = 4
  }
  }

 MkII:

 \setuplines[space=on]

 \starttext
 \startlines\tt
 %\startlines[style=mono] % works only in MkIV
 {\bf def} ra():
  a = 3
  b = 4
 \stoplines
 \stoptext

 Wolfgang

Thanks Wolfhang. It goes better, but there is still a little bug:

{\bf def} inserts a white space in front of the line

Compare:
{\bf def} ra():
def ra():
a = 3
b = 4

  not a solution, but this works

  \font\fgras = lmmonolt10-bold.otf

  thanks luigi, it compiles with 'context 2010.01.26' but:
  - the def is not in bold
 def is bold (you can see it with pdffonts) only it's loaded at
 10pt, while body font is 12pt (I believe)

it is true - i saw it just after sending the mail.

  - context adds \n between every line.
 hmm, If I cut-and-paste to vim I see the same as pdf , ie no extra \n
 anyway you can play with interlinespace

ok  \interlinespace works
 \starttext
 \font\fgras = lmmonolt10-bold.otf at 12pt
 {\tt\setupinterlinespace[line=1ex]
 {\obeylines
 {\fgras def} ra():
 \ \ \ \ a = 3
 \ \ \ \ b = 4
 }
 }
 \stoptext

but remains that every {\bf } introduces a white space;
how to force context to make a backspace ?

  my 76 pages of Python code rewritten in plain tex by a python
  script are accetabile (compile by pdftex) - so i will try to

 thank you to remember me that I'm always on late with python pretty printer ..

it would be fine

Re: [NTG-context] Building a guitar chord using MP

Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky yatskov...@gmail.com scribit:

 Hello,

 I have interesting task. I want to build a picture of a guitar chord
 using metapost.

 For now, I only knew how to make a chord grid:

 \startreusableMPgraphic{chordgrid}
 drawoptions(withpen pencircle scaled 0.4pt withcolor black) ;
 draw hlingrid(0, 5, 1, 0.8cm, 1cm) ;
 draw vlingrid(0, 4, 1, 1cm, 0.8cm) ;
 \stopreusableMPgraphic

 \define[0]\ChGrid{\dontleavehmode\useMPgraphic{chordgrid}\hskip2mm}

 \starttext
 \ChGrid
 \stoptext

 I need to change it so that I could specify fret numbers, i.e. six
 numbers for each string, and draw a filled circles in these positions.

 I've started with a command like this

 \define[6]\Ch{\dontleavehmode\useMPgraphic{chordgrid}...

 I'm not sure what to do next... How to pass these parameters into MP,
 how to organize the loop...

 For a test, \Ch[1][3][1][2][1][1] should produce

 |-O-|---|---|---|
 |-O-|---|---|---|
 |---|-O-|---|---|
 |-O-|---|---|---|
 |---|---|-O-|---|
 |-O-|---|---|---|

 Please, help me with it.

Lilypond ?
