[NTG-context] first steps with \dosingleempty

2008-09-11 Thread Goebel, Juergen
Hi,

Regarding the following example I've got two questions.

(1) Why don't I ever see the argument #2 in the output?
(2) What do I have to do to suppress the unwanted space
after the end of the output of this macro (as can be seen
in the result before the following comma)?

Regards,

Juergen

Thanks a lot, elegant and much shorter.
But, alas, I can't test it yet since the
\doifsomethingelse seems to be somewhat
newer. My oldtimer (according to Hraban)

Does anyone know when the TL 2008 will be

 distributed to the DANTE-members?

very likely, but you should consider trying out the official context

You could use \doifelsenothing with reverse order for the second
and third argument, \doifsomethingelse was included after the
TL 2008 ConTeXt release.

 argument

 allthough:

 .tfm
 /usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/tex-gyre/ec-qplr

I got the same with texmfstart under Windows

D:\context\wwltexmfstart luatools --all *.qplr.*
texmfstart luatools --all *.qplr.*
...t/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/luatools.lua:4392: bad

and without texmfstart

D:\context\wwlluatools --all *qplr.*

no action at all.

I reinstalled the whole thing, exactly the same steps and now it
runs.

Usally I am switching off an existing MikTeX-Installation by
renaming the MikTeX-Directory. This was a problem in the past.
May be something went wrong with this step.

Here it seems it doesn't load the encoding file because it
loads ec-qplr:afm (unicode encoding), yours probably loads
ec-qplr:tfm (ec encodign).

Perhaps qplr.pfb is missing? The crash could be a luatex bug then,
it is definately possible there is an incorrect fclose(NULL)
somewhere when the enc is there but the pfb isn't. Can you
try that please?

The actully using pfb instead of otf sounds like a mkiv problem.

I have indeed removed all the afm files from the font, if that's part
of your question.

  Perhaps qplr.pfb is missing?

I have it on the disk, but it doesn't get so far to load it (maybe
because it crashes before, or I don't know).

qplr.pfb is there, but even if I remove it :) nothing changes.

mkii as well. The same problem happens in XeTeX (not with fclose, but
alone the fact that the old fonts are used instead of otf).

Sorry, I get careless sometimes (all those d*rn W-people ... )

There are actually two bugs at play here: context was using out-of-range
characters in a Type1 font; and that in turn triggered the fclose()
errors that were a bug in luatex itself. Interested persons can read the
diagnosis and solution here:

Well, that's the thing: it seems to us that whenever context finds PFB
files for the tex-gyre fonts (qplr.tfmpfb in this case), it will use
those, totally ignoring any opentype fonts that are also installed.

ah, i see

at the top of type-gyr.tex add:

\beginNEWTEX already-otf-gyre
 \endinput
\endNEWTEX

the type-gyr is only meant for type one usage and maybe we should merge
this info in type-one (assuming that context users now have gyre on
their system)

however, even with pfb i don't get the error, so this is still something
weird

It is an array access that goes out of bounds, so it could be
somewhat system-dependent. It will _certainly_ only happen if the
tfm is used, the afm-based font is in wide encoding, and that is
perfectly safe as it doesnt need to array indices at all.

The fclose errors are just a side-effect of the real crash
and happen after that has already happened. The crash
manifests itself as just another

   ! Emergency stop.
   * a.tex

But like I said, it may not happen always. Out of bounds errors
do that, sometimes.

Best wishes,
Taco

Sure. But there is one thing that I don't understand and needs to be
resolved even before adding NEWTEX on top of type-gyr. Why are the
Type 1 fonts used at all? If I say \usetyscript[postscript] (no
[ec]!!!), why do I get the Type 1 fonts instead of OpenType? Shouldn't
a couple of additional definitions with ec/texnansi encoding be rather
harmless (i.e. should not influence OpenType fonts)?

we use names like TimesRomen-Bold internally and type-gyr maps to pfb

Hi,

Wolfgang Werners-Lucchini wrote:

I am using scite with the following command:
 texmfstart texexec --autopdf --luatex tst3.tex

I simply have no idea. I do not understand why windows
would object to closing a file that doesn't exist (not even
how it could be possible for an opened file to not exist).

It could be a simple matter of a missing file that somehow
luatex fails to check for during opening so it is not discovered
until it attempts to close the file, but even if that is true,
I have no idea how to debug anything on windows.

It could also be a (more complicated) problem triggered by
disk synchronisation issues in Windows itself. We have been
bitten by those before (what is your windows flavour?)

In either case, someone else has to come up with tests and/or
fix attempts. The only advice I can give is to reinstall
context using the new minimals and see if that helps any.

how it could be possible for an opened file to not exist).

It could be a simple matter of a missing file that somehow
luatex fails to check for during opening so it is not discovered

I have no idea how to debug anything on windows.

It could also be a (more complicated) problem triggered by
disk synchronisation issues in Windows itself. We have been

In either case, someone else has to come up with tests and/or

This is a fresh installation. I installed it using
'context-setup-mswin.zip'.

After some trials, I found that the example compiles ok without the
TWO \eogonek commands. There were TWO fclose attempts in the logs,
too.

Can this be a hint?

Another thing that I don't understand - why is the encoding file for

Yes, even 1.3. Tried optimizing (that *should* delete all unnecessary
cruft).
It seems possible to delete tags with one of the TouchUp tools, but
the PDF stays tagged anyway.

Else you need to ask on the XeTeX mailing list. (But indeed: why not

Mac type of PostScript fonts doesn't work (or better: it only works
with xdv2pdf, which isn't supported in ConTeXt any more). You can use
the windows type Type1 fonts (i.e. just the normal .pfb files). That
should work on any system, but on Mac you need to reference it by
 filename. Font name won't work.

Ok, thanks.

Tomorrow I'll try to use an additional PostScript font - is that even
possible? Otherwise I must convert it to OpenType.

It is, but which OS and what kind of PostScript font are you using?
Mac type of PostScript fonts doesn't work (or better: it only works
with xdv2pdf, which isn't supported in ConTeXt any more). You can use
the windows type Type1 fonts (i.e. just the normal .pfb files). That
should work on any system, but on Mac you need to reference it by
filename. Font name won't work.
