1. Often, these trojans will keep REAL anti-malware applications from running. However, if the system can be booted into Safe Mode (I came across one that could not!), MalwareBytes at least ought to run. 2. They guy is being prevented from downloading MBytes or anything else on that machine.

Hmmm, yes, connecting to that share from workstation works OK, apparently the only thing missing is the share icon in Explorer. If I have any further troubles, I'll remove it from the registry and re-establish. And in the future, I'll try remember the advice about exporting the key as well.
