I'm used to seeing (or hearing) Willow Flycatchers in the general vicinity of
salt marshes. This weekend, my son had soccer games in Levittown and Dix Hills.
Both locations are far removed from any salt marsh habitat or any water at all

From 7-8pm both species were still present on the flats at Mecox Bay.

I got some feedback to this post with news that a River Cruiser was seen
today on Ironwood Road. It was photographed but the contact info is not
available. If you are that person (or anyone that comes across one in the
future), can you please send me a picture? There could be a unique

This is off topic, but for the benefit of some birders -- those that took
interest in a dragonfly that I pointed out at the Mississippi Kite spot the
day I was there (May 31). I had called it an Illinois River Cruiser, which
made sense as that's the only River Cruiser so far recorded in New York
St
This afternoon, before the thundershowers rolled in from the west, my
father and I, along with Jim Cullen and his friend Lee, enjoyed a 1st
Summer Arctic Tern that was present on the Cupsogue flats at low
tide. Two adult Black Terns were also seen.

Earlier today Angus Wilson found a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the Mecox Bay
inlet in eastern Suffolk Co. The bird was still present this afternoon at
4pm as were two WILSON'S PHALAROPES. No sign of the Arctic Tern found there
yesterday by John Shemilt.

as if on territory. Follow trail 5 as it passes west of the old
walled garden.

Blue Chip Farm has been very accommodating to birders over the years and
birders have been respectful of the horses. Please do not go on the fields or
do anything to interfere with the horses or we will not be welcome. It only
takes one bad apple. Irene Warshauer

The Saturday morning bird walk at NYBG began shortly after the rain stopped. It
turned out to be a beautiful day.
The PILEATED WOODPECKER was spotted on Tuesday down by Twin Lakes sitting in a
wooden fence. The birder who saw the woodpecker said she had a very good look
before it took off.
