[nysbirds-l] Ft. Tilden/Breezy Point, Queens - 1/12

2014-01-12 Thread Richard Aracil

Hi All,
Thanks to a ride from David Burg, Jared and Michelle Cole and I spent a great
3.5 hours in Breezy Point and environs this afternoon. Our plan was to explore
the beach to the Breezy Point jetty and then bird along the dune trail. Little
did we know that scanning a ~1K stretch of ocean between Ft. Tilden and the
point would end up occupying almost our entire visit while providing plenty of
excitement.
The highlights included a Razorbill foraging quite close to shore among the
many Long-tailed Ducks, an Iceland Gull also close to shore and last but not
least, an adult Black-headed Gull. All were seen in the same general area
described above. Unfortunately we could not get a photo of the latter, but the
definite red bill, bright red feet and bulkier-than-Bonaparte's appearance were
all obvious. Perhaps this is the same bird recently seen along the Brooklyn
coast?

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn (Kings) coast birding Jan 12th

2014-01-12 Thread keir randall
Brooklyn continues to turn up some good winter birds. Some highlights from this
morning:
Veteran's Memorial Pier (Bay Ridge Avenue at Shore Road)
A drake Eurasian Wigeon close to the rocks by the wastewater treatment plant.
Parking lot by the Verrazano Bridge
A pair of White-winged Scoters What I presume to be the variant of Common
Goldeneye female with a mostly yellow bill. See link to photo below.
Coney Island Creek Park
A continuing Lesser Black-backed Gull13 Snow BuntingsGood numbers of the more
common sea ducks.A single Bonaparte's Gull but no sign of last weekend's
Black-head Gull.
Running out of time I diverted away without looking in on the beach by Leon
Kaiser Park where Dennis Hrehowsik and co found the continuing Glaucous Gull
shortly afterwards.

[nysbirds-l] Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet

2014-01-12 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I took a ride to Dune Road / Shinnecock Inlet.

The inlet held a nice raft which consisted of various scoter species and
Common Eiders as well as some fringe red-breasted mergansers. The
highlight was an immature male King Eider that I photographed
(accidentally).

The rest of Dune Road was really quiet - there was a Snowy Owl in the marsh
near the Bridge which was previously mentioned on this list. A northern
Harrier was found further west as well as a female Belted Kingfisher. I
noticed a very large number of gulls both over the ocean/on the beach where
large waves were crashing as well as perched on dredging equipment in the
bay. I'm sure some patience at either location would have produced
something good. As the sun set and I drove over the bridge, I noticed
another sizeable collection of gulls perched on the rocks of the coast
guard marina - it may be worth checking for all you gullheads out there

Photos of the birds - including the king eider can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Connetquot State Park: Northern Pintail/ thanks for the recent feedback

2014-01-12 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the recent feedback on my request to help ID a few birds
(Bonaparte Gulls and Common Goldeneye) I was at Connetquot State Park
today and saw a drake Northern Pintail on the main lake by the big house
(was at the northern section of the lake). There were also a mixed flock
of ~75 gadwalls, ~ 10 ring-necked duck, and one lesser scaup present.

Good birding,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Dune Rd Snowy Owl - Yes

2014-01-12 Thread leormand .
To all of those who look (and find) Snowy Owls along Dune road, PLEASE do
not park your vehicle in the middle of the road and get out to look at the
bird with your scope. You're creating a hazard for yourself and others
(aside from it being illegal and frankly, rude). There was a red car in
particular this afternoon which made no attempt to pull to the side as it's
3-4 occupants got out with their scopes and proceeded to block the whole
road and look at the bird in the marsh.

There are ample areas to park that require little walking - if that is not
feasible at least pull your vehicle to the side of the road where there is
a sufficient shoulder.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Green-Wood Cemetery continues

2014-01-12 Thread Matthew Wills
Saw the juvenile Red-headed WP continuing in Green-Wood late this afternoon.
The bird is starting to show a little red on the head. I have some pictures on
my blog http://matthewwills.com/2014/01/12/red-headed-nearly/ The location was
as noted in earlier posts here, right across the street immediately inside the
25th St. Neo-Gothic gate.

Other highlights were four raptor species: Red-tailed (2x, including one bird
with a full crop), Peregrine, Merlin, and Sharp-shinned. Largest clump of Fox
Sparrows I've ever seen hanging out together (5).

Not many birds all told, but choice ones.

[nysbirds-l] Wave Hill, Riverdale, BX, Bald Eagle etc

2014-01-12 Thread Gabriel Willow
I led a morning walk @ Wave Hill today for NYC Audubon. It was a pretty good
day for raptors: an adult Bald Eagle soaring repeatedly over the grounds & the
Hudson; an adult Peregrine Falcon soaring & stooping; a Merlin (which briefly
strafed the Peregrine); and an immature Red-tailed Hawk.

Other highlights included a large flock of Cedar Waxwings & a single
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Riverhead (Suffolk Co) Yellow-headed Blackbird

2014-01-12 Thread Richard Kaskan
I stopped by the buffalo farm on Reeves Ave in Riverhead (Suffolk Co) about
2:30pm today. Ken Feustel had reported a Yellow-headed Blackbird here on
the seventh, and I did see one in the large flock of cowbirds, etc. I do
not have a photograph, but I got an excellent look at this bird - it was
not an adult male but it showed a lot of yellow on the throat and breast -
an immature male, maybe?

[nysbirds-l] Coxsackie Grasslands and vic

2014-01-12 Thread James Coe
Spent about an hour checking the Coxsackie Grasslands and vicinity on Sunday
afternoon 1/12.

Most notable for what was NOT seen: only one harrier spotted; ZERO gulls
at the Cox. boat launch; no mergansers on the river; no eagles; no flocks
of larks or buntings along River Rd; no Snowy or Short-eared owls anywhere.
Very quiet.

Saw 5 Red-tails in all, and best bird of the afternoon was a single dark
morph Rough-legged Hawk along Flats Rd, about ½ mile west of Rt 9W.

[nysbirds-l] Odds and Ends from the East End (Suffolk County)

2014-01-12 Thread Anthony Collerton
Spent the whole weekend in the area, much already mentioned by others ...

Friday:
Checked some of the NorthWest Harbor shore points in the evening but didn't
come up with anything terribly noteworthy (poor visibility hampered
sea-watching).

Saturday:
Started at Shinecock Inlet with 3 continuing KING EIDER, a GLAUCOUS GULL
and an ICELAND GULL. Also had a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the parking lot, but
it quickly flushed and headed for warmer climes.
Ponquogue Bridge added 3 BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES and a SNOWY OWL.
Tiana Beach had 11 SNOW BUNTINGS and a scattering of shorebirds.
TRITON LANE added 2 more SNOWY OWLS and another Grackle. No good sparrows.

Then checked the Southampton Ponds (mostly frozen and empty save for a few
shovelers) and Hook Pond in East Hampton (empty), plus the "snipe spot" at
Georgica (not much). The only noteworthy bird in the Hamptons was a
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT in Watermill. Most of the waterfowl seem to have
been frozen out by the recent cold snap.

Montauk was bit of a bust in the afternoon given the deteriorating weather
(rain and fog) but I did add a GREAT CORMORANT at Montauk Inlet, and later
a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Napeague.

Sunday:
EASTERN SCREECH OWL at dawn was a good start in NorthWest Harbor.
A sea-watch at Montauk Point produced 22 RAZORBILLS, a single BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE, and a RED-NECKED GREBE.
Checked Deep Hollow, Rita's and Teddy Roosevelt (not much).
Lake Montauk added a single LESSER SCAUP in the GREATER SCAUP flock. and
the two previously mentioned BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (found last year by Peter
Polshek and apparently returning to the same area) among a good mix of
waterfowl.
Lake Montauk Inlet and Culloden Point did not gift me with any of the
rarities found yesterday by Shai and Pat - timing is everything - I just
got the usual sea-duck, etc.
Fort Pond had 2 CANVASBACK along with some more common waterfowl.
Napeague gave better views of Larry the LBBG, and a fly-over immature BALD
EAGLE.

Checked more geese on the way West but didn't come up with anything unusual.

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Goose and Eurasian Wigeon - Centerport (Suffolk Co.)

2014-01-12 Thread Brent Bomkamp
The *Cackling Goose* reported yesterday by Gary Strauss continued this
morning on the Centerport Mill Pond as viewed from the DEC property on
Centershore Road. Note that the bird was previously seen on Tung Ting
Pond, the adjacent pond that can be viewed from the Chalet Motor Inn
parking lot. This was an especially small individual with a very "frosty"
appearance. There was no hint of a neck ring even when the bird was in
alert posture. A photo can be found here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bebirder/11908311934/

On the far side of the pond was the continuing male *Eurasian Wigeon *first
found by Derek Rodgers in December, now in full breeding plumage. Also
present were *52 Canvasback,* two Redheads, and an immature Double-crested
Cormorant.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Goose and Eurasian Wigeon - Centerport (Suffolk Co.)

2014-01-12 Thread Brent Bomkamp
The *Cackling Goose* reported yesterday by Gary Strauss continued this
morning on the Centerport Mill Pond as viewed from the DEC property on
Centershore Road. Note that the bird was previously seen on Tung Ting
Pond, the adjacent pond that can be viewed from the Chalet Motor Inn
parking lot. This was an especially small individual with a very frosty

[nysbirds-l] Wave Hill, Riverdale, BX, Bald Eagle etc

2014-01-12 Thread Gabriel Willow
I led a morning walk @ Wave Hill today for NYC Audubon. It was a pretty good
day for raptors: an adult Bald Eagle soaring repeatedly over the grounds the
Hudson; an adult Peregrine Falcon soaring stooping; a Merlin (which briefly
strafed the Peregrine); and an immature Red-tailed Hawk.

Other highlights included a large flock of Cedar Waxwings a single
Yellow-rumped Warbler.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Green-Wood Cemetery continues

2014-01-12 Thread Matthew Wills
Saw the juvenile Red-headed WP continuing in Green-Wood late this afternoon.
The bird is starting to show a little red on the head. I have some pictures on
my blog http://matthewwills.com/2014/01/12/red-headed-nearly/ The location was
as noted in earlier posts here, right across the street immediately inside the
25th St. Neo-Gothic gate.

Other highlights were four raptor species: Red-tailed (2x, including one bird
with a full crop), Peregrine, Merlin, and Sharp-shinned. Largest clump of Fox
Sparrows I've ever seen hanging out together (5).

Not many birds all told, but choice ones.

Perhaps this is the same bird recently seen along the Brooklyn
coast?
