[nysbirds-l] Gyr Falcon Update

2015-02-09 Thread Curt McDermott
As I have had many inquiries to as to parking at the "new location" for the
bird, I thought I should update what I know (think).
Approx. 5 minutes after my last post, that noted a "new location", the bird
flew in a straight line toward the direction of Old Fort Rd. Although we were
back in the area of Hoagerburgh and Old Fort Rd., within minutes, we never
relocated the bird. I would suggest, that this was merely an expansion of the
birds hunting area and perhaps just a place where it goes when we have been
unable to locate it in the past. I would guess that the bird will continue
with its previous habits and would offer the Bruyn Rd. location as an option to
check only when unable to locate on Old Fort Rd. Of course, this is all
conjecture as I can not read the birds mind.
As to the parking questions regarding parking along Bruyn Tpk.there are NO
parking options.
Good Birding,
Curt McDermott

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach strip to Robert Moses SP

2015-02-09 Thread syschiff
Feb 9, 2015

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) took an afternoon drive along the parkway to
Captree. The roads were clear and all parking lots were free of ice and snow.
At Captree we fond a dozen BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES in the shrubbery on the side of
the parking lot just past the boats. Form there we went over to Robert Moses SP
and found approx. 40 HORNED LARKS, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 1 SNOW BUNTING
feeding on the traffic circle as you enter field #5..

Traveling home (west) along the strip, we saw 2 NORTHERN HARRIES and a hovering
dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, It was just east of Jones Beach field #6..

We stopped by Pt. Lookout on our way, but never left the 4-wheel SUV. The
entire parking lot was a sheet of ice and totally impassible on foot. Looked
for but: did not find the Zamboni.

Re:[nysbirds-l] gyrfalcon _ _ _ YES!

2015-02-09 Thread Curt McDermott
Gyrfalcon new location. Having not has enough earlier today, Clara and I
returned to see the Gyr again. It is currently on Bruyn Tpk., 1/2 mile east of
the intersection of Hoagerburgh Rd. The bird is perched across the field
directly across from 350 Bruyn Tpk. As a second reference point, there is a
yellow excavator on the property to the left of the bird. When we first came
upon it, it was feeding over a kill about 100yrds out in the field. NOTE:
there is no shoulder on the side of the road!!! If you cross the white line,
you will be towed out just as we were, in our 4x4 vehicle.

Good luck,
   Curt & Clara McDermott

RE: [nysbirds-l] new COMMON/MEW photos

2015-02-09 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Wow, yet another for this gull whisperer!

It's definitely not a first-winter bird, based on the non-juv primaries.

I think brachyrhynchus might be more likely than canus to show so much black in
the tail and this degree of intrusion of pale along the inner web of primary 8
in second-winter. The bird is tiny and thus not a candidate for Kamchatka.

[nysbirds-l] another COMMON/MEW Gull in Brooklyn

2015-02-09 Thread Shane Blodgett
There was a different first-winter Common/Mew (not certain of subspecies yet)
roosting with ~ 400 RBGU and 1 BOGU on Veteran's Memorial Pier in Brooklyn
(Kings County) this morning. First seen about 11:20 it was on the pier for
about 10 minutes before taking off and flying (more like sailing in the stiff
NE wind) towards Staten Island where I eventually lost it. I spent another 15
minutes shivering to see if it would return but it did not. I will post
pictures ASAP.

Good luck,
   Curt Clara McDermott

There certainly has been an incursion of Rough-legs on Long Island of late.
On Saturday (2/7) Tim Dunn and I saw 3 different Roughies: along the Wantagh
Parkway near the toll booths; over the JFK bird sanctuary (Tobay); and over
the marshes north of Ocean Parkway opposite Overlook Beach. All 3 were dark
morphs, but the timeline and distance between encounters ruled out any chance
of the same bird being seen. What are the odds of that?
