[nysbirds-l] DATE: Sagaponack Christmas Bird Count

2014-10-29 Thread Peter Max Polshek
Greetings New York (or those from other states) Birders:

The 2014 Sagaponack Christmas Count will be held on Sunday, 21 December.

The count area extends east from Mecox Bay to East Hampton. It
includes a wonderful array of birding locations that include the
south shore bays and ponds and surrounding farms, Three Mile Harbor,
Northwest Creek and adjacent wooded areas and wetlands.

Please contact me, Peter Polshek, if you are interested in participating.

Please note that the 2014 Montauk CBC will be held the day before.
It makes for a great East End birding weekend to participate in both
counts.

Thanks and Good Fortune during the 2014 Winter Season,

Hugh McGuinness and Peter Polshek (pm...@well.com)

[nysbirds-l] Montauk area: 19 March

2013-03-19 Thread Peter Max Polshek
Stormy but quiet at the Point.

At Deep Hollow (south pasture) there was a single Pectoral Sandpiper
and Lesser Yellowlegs.

Also, among the Canada Geese was a 'giant' goose, its head/neck
plumage exhibited characteristics of a domestic type and a Canada. It
had dull orangish legs and was taller and larger than its compatriots.

[nysbirds-l] Gilgo: Gyrfalcon

2013-02-25 Thread Peter Max Polshek
Having arrived at about 10am, I was told that just 10 minutes before
the bird was seen departing the Osprey nest platform west of the
Gilgo Parking Lot (yesterday's location) heading north and possibly
east.

I, along with a number of other observers remained at the location
searching to no avail for several hours. At about 1;30 a birder
showed up saying that the bird was perched on an Osprey Nest Platform
about a mile west of the Cedar Beach Parking Lot.

Several of the group headed east to seek our fortune. We parked on
the north verge of the highway and hoped the police would not show
up, as it is a ticketable offense.

The Gyrfalcon was perched on a cross-beam of the platform facing
north and preening. This was a distant but definitive observation.
I left at about 2:00 with the bird still perched.

If you don't want to risk a ticket, park at Cedar Beach and walk west.

Good luck to all.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk area: 7 February

2013-02-07 Thread Peter Max Polshek
A pre-storm visit at midday today.

As expected the Point was quiet, Common Eider and all three Scoters
in low numbers (50-150), no Gannets, few Common Loons, even fewer
Red-throated, a few Horned Grebes, and 4 Razorbills.

At Lake Montauk from South Lake Drive I was able to relocate both
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (drake and hen) which have been present since 2
January. They were in the southwest corner of the "Lake" associating
with a small flock of Common Goldeneye.

At the end of West Lake Drive at the base of the jetty ere the two
Iceland Gulls (adult and 1st year) that been frequenting the beach
for quite a while.

That's about it.

Hopefully tomorrow morning will be more interesting at the Point
after a night of east winds.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Point: Thursday

2013-01-31 Thread Peter Max Polshek
Hoping for a great deal of activity following a night of strong
southerly winds, I was at The Point early.

However, the only species of note was a single DOVEKIE which landed
off The Point.

Numbers of other other expected species were typical of this quiet winter.

Finally, I broke my curse.

The Hicks Island Snowy Owk was visible from the boat ramp at Lazy

directly across the channel.

The hightlight from a very quick trip to The Point:

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl: nr Verrazano Bridge

2011-11-30 Thread Peter Max Polshek
A friend sent me a link to an article in the
Sheepshead Bay news blog regarding a Snowy Owl:

"These were taken by a friend of mine, who also
is an avid fisherman in the area. He was fishing
just next to Hoffman Island, which is one of the
two islands, just south of the Verranzano [sic]
Bridge at the entrance of New York HarborŠ He had
his camera with him and was most fortunate to get
these magnificent pictures of what I believe to
be a Snowy Owl."
