[nysbirds-l] Collared Dove

2021-06-26 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
**Correction** With better documentation, the reported Eurasian
Collared-Dove has been proven to be an African* Collared-Dove - seen on
Lilly St. in the City of Newburgh on June 12 and 22, continuing through the
23rd. Provenance would now be most questionable.

[nysbirds-l] Imm. Little Gull

2017-06-06 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
After much deliberation I am posting this with 100% certainty. After
hearing of a report of Sandwich Terns at Nickerson Beach. I made my way
down and found a Royal Tern whuch then turned into 3. While scanning the
terns on the beach and flying over the colony a small immature gull
appeared. I noticed the black edge on the tail, a dark cap and a prominent
M to the wing pattern. As the bird flew over the colony it was smaller then
the Common Terns and rounder winged. The bird then continued flying east
and disappeared. There was also a report of an immature Bonaparte's Gull
later. This was at Nickerson Beach in Nassau county.

[nysbirds-l] Suffolk County Birding

2017-01-09 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Ed Becher and I spent a day in Suffolk County catching up on the reported
rarities.
An early morning stop at Belmont Lake produced the elusive Barnacle Goose
already cued up by Taylor Sturm. A stop at nearby Elda Lake produced a
roosting Greater White-fronted Goose but not the 3 Ross's Geese from the
previous day. Next up was Patchogue Lake, a previously reported Blue-winged
Teal was AWOL. The Atlantic Point Apartments in Bellport hosted the
continuing Glaucous and Iceland Gulls. Eastport Lake was completely frozen
over and did not harbor the Eurasian Widgeon reported by Ken and Sue
Feustel. A scheduled appointment with 2 Rufous Hummingbirds in Aquebogue,
where we met up with Douglas Futyma, did not disappoint. A scan of Alvahs
Lane fields did not turn up any American Pipits, though Mike Zito and
Robert Taylor had much better results. Southold did produce the Townsend's
Solitaire and Cesar Castillo got his lifer. A shortcut through Shelter
Island to the South Fork turned up a small flock of Wild Turkeys. The
Wainscott Sandhill Crane was seen earlier, but a no show when Ed and I
arrived. All in all a great birding day.

[nysbirds-l] American Avocet

2015-08-12 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Following up on Andrew's discovery of an American Avocet at the East Pond
of Jamaica Bay WR. Ed Becher and myself made our way there after 1:30pm. We
walked the west side of the pond from the north end and immediately found a
single White rumped Sandpiper. Continuing past Dead Man's Cove scanning the
east side of the pond down by the Raunt, Ed found the Avocet roosting
amongst the Black Ducks and Mallards. Also seen were the previously
reported Black and Gull-billed Terns found by Sean and Shane. If one used
the path to Big John's Pond, one could look across the pond and possibly
pick out the Avocet among the ducks.

[nysbirds-l] State Park Birding/Warblers and Vireos

2015-04-23 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Some birding in the State Parks on Long Island this morning was productive
in variety if not numbers. Teaming up with Bob Anderson, Phil Uruburu and
Arie Gilbert added more eyes and skill to the mix.
Jones Beach West End 2 though not productive did turn up a FOS in the form
of a beautiful adult male Orchard Oriole by the Coast Guard Station. The
winds caused us to cut short our search and meet up at Hempstead Lake State
Park. Some intel from Ed Becher about White-eyed Vireo, Warbling Vireo,
Praire Warbler and Yellow-throated Warbler brought us to the park. Pine,
Yellow-rumped and Black and white Warblers were seen but no Praire or
Yellow-throated. A Northern Parula was heard. A White-eyed Vireo was at
first elusive and then gave itself up for good views. Next on the agenda
was Valley Stream State Park. Blue headed and Warbling Vireo were on tap. A
few Yellow Warblers appeared. Arie called out American Redstart and Bob
Anderson found a Northern Waterthrush. I found a Nashville Warbler keeping
low in the multiflora rose bushes. Not great numbers of birds but a nice
variety of birds and birders. Thanks guys.

[nysbirds-l] Cliff Swallow/Northern Goshawk/Lesser Black-backed Gull

2015-04-09 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Birding around Nassau county today found me at Hempstead Lake State Park to
look for swallows after a tip from Ed Becher alerted me to a Cliff Swallow
and N. Rough-winged Swallow(s). The birds were found and the CLSW was a
much brighter individual then the previously reported one. A FOS Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher was a nice bonus. After I went to Lido Beach and found a pair
of Harlequin Ducks at the first jetty. At West End 2 across from the Police
station the previously reported immature Northern Goshawk continues. At
field 6 also in Jones Beach State Park a single adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull was in the lot. Most likely the same individual found by Bob
Rosetti(hope I spelt it right) the other day. All in all a good day. Also I
was told that the Louisiana Waterthrush in Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown

appearance followed by a flyby Barn Swallow. Northern Rough-winged
Swallow(s) on MacDonald's and South Pond. Finally the Cliff Swallow
appeared put in a brief view and was refound by myself after all left in

numerous Eastern Phoebes, Brown Creepers, one Merlin, Golden- crowned

[nysbirds-l] A Few Ducks

2015-03-29 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
This is a belated post, but not of any rarities. On Friday I checked the
ponds between the nature center and West End 2 at Jones Beach state park.
As I approached I noticed a lot of Green-winged Teal and Wood Duck in the
air with the other usual expected ducks (Black, Shoveler and Mallards).
Sneaking up on the ponds since the ducks are very skittish here I was
amazed to see that the Green-winged Teal numbered in excess of 200+ and the
Wood Duck probably numbered around 60+. The ducks were scattered through
the different sections of the pond and in one instance were put up by a
Peregrine which came in and made a beeline towards me and flew in about 20
feet overhead and checked me out then headed southwest towards the west end
of the pond. On Saturday the numbers of ducks were greatly reduced though
some may have been hidden in the back of the pond. Tree Swallow numbers
were up this day with three different groups, one in the dunes on the sand,
another at the pond on the phragmites and another group by the parking lot
exit resting on the lawn all in all totaling close to 250+ A second hand
report today was that the ducks were much fewer in number with a pair of
Blue-winged Teal have being found by Stacey. Not sure of her last name
sorry. A single Great Egret also flew over on Saturday at the pond.

Following up on a report, we went to the West Marina at Pt. Lookout and
found the BREEDING PLUMAGE RED-NECKED GREBE. The bird was within the
breakwater and we walked out along the floating walkways to get closer for
an increasable photo opt.

At Jones Beach a distant flying large raptor may have been the Goshawk. At
the turn to the loop pkwy to Pt. Lookout, there was a BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxing

2015-02-12 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Just a repost of my earlier post to clarify. The BOWA was discovered at the
West End 2 turn around. It was not associating with any other birds. It
flew into the center and was subsequently refound. West End 2 is part of
Jones Beach State Park for those unfamiliar with the area.

[nysbirds-l] Barrow's Goldeneye

2015-01-14 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
The Barrow's Goldeneye continues on the north shore but west of Sands Point
Preserve. Four of us, Ed Becher, Bob Anderson, Bob Berlingeri and myself ,
Bob Proniewych, braved the cold and wind and traveled to the north shore
which felt more like the north pole. A search near Sands Point did not turn
up the Goldeneye, but after a half mile hike to the west we struck gold.
The drake Barrow's was actively feeding with a small group of 6-8 Common
Goldeneyes.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve

2015-01-08 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
The weather says winter, but the birds said spring. Pulling into the Walker
Street parking lot the first bird to greet me was an Eastern Phoebe.
Walking over the bridge just west of the parking lot, a Gray Catbird sat
out on a wild rose bush feeding and preening. Walking north on the paved
pedestrian I started my vigil for two warblers, Nashville and
Orange-crowned. They did not disappoint. Both appeared around noon feeding
on the cattails growing in the marsh on the northside of the parking lot
and keeping company with one another. Some other birds noted were: Rusty
Blackbird, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Winter Wren, Swamp Sparrow and an
American Tree Sparrow seen there yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Palm Warbler and King Eider

2015-01-05 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
A phone call from Bob Anderson today alerted me to a Palm Warbler of the
western subspecies at Lido Preserve. The warbler was hanging out in the
garden walking around pumping its tail and keeping out of the wind. A short
detour to Point Lookout had us looking through a large flock of Common
Eiders where a single female. King Eider was found near the western most
jetty/groyne diving and feeding on mussels. The flock flew, split up and
the King Eider could not be refound and the wind and cold drove us off the
beach.

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose

2014-12-21 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
The Barnacle goose continues at St. Charles cemetery in Farmingdale. 3
Greater White-fronted geese were found in a Canada goose flock on the
southside of Long Island avenue by the Pinelawn train station. The flock
also contained one Snow goose and one dark morph Snow goose.
