[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling Ducks continue (Suffolk)

2018-06-24 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

The pair of Black bellied Whistling Ducks continued as of 1:30 PM at
Nissequogue River State Park in Suffolk County. They were on the small
duckweed covered pond near the end of the entrance road and the
administration building. They spent a fair bit of time foraging at the
northwest end of the pond before climbing onto a small log in the northwest
corner.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Plover -- West End Jones Beach

2017-06-12 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Just wanted to get a quick word out that my mom and I just had a Wilson's
Plover flyover us at the swale at West End. It was a quick view but it
appeared to be a female based on the paler brown and narrow breast band. We
have been unable to relocate. It flew west towards the ocean.

Also present in the swale were 2 Black-necked Stilts and 4 White-rumped
Sandpipers.

Good luck if you try for it!

[nysbirds-l] Summer Tanager - Jones Beach West End, Nassau County

2016-09-26 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This morning, I checked the West End of Jones Beach, focusing on the Coast
Guard Station and Median. There was a good variety of songbirds, including
my first Golden-crowned Kinglets and Dark-eyed Junco of the fall. The
highlight though, was a single *Summer Tanager *that briefly appeared in
the median before moving on. I saw it along the median near the turnoff for
the Coast Guard Station. It seemed to head westward, but I was unable to
relocate it. In addition to the tanager, there was a good smattering of
warblers, including a big push of Yellow-rumped Warblers and a few Palm,
Pine, Black-throated Green, Blackpoll, and Prairie Warblers.

A link to my complete eBird checklist, with photos of the Summer Tanager,

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: NNYBirds: WILLOW PTARMIGAN on Pt Peninsula, Jefferson County

2014-04-25 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

I saw this posted to the NNY list serve, and thought that it would be of
interest to many others throughout the state.

Best,
Shawn

-- Forwarded message --

Subject: NNYBirds: WILLOW PTARMIGAN on Pt Peninsula, Jefferson County
To: northern_ny_bi...@yahoogroups.com, oneidabi...@yahoogroups.com

Yesterday evening Eugene Nichols found a white bird on Point Peninsula that
he eventually came to believe was a Willow Ptarmigan. This morning I met
him at the place where he found the bird, and we eventually relocated it.
It was immediately obvious that this bird was a winter plumaged Rock or
Willow Ptarmigan, and based on the bill size and shape I believe it is a
Willow (which I also believe is the more likely of the two). The location
is on South Shore Road 3.5 miles south of the intersection with Pine Woods
Road (this road is in Point Peninsula Village, known locally as
Shangri-La). When you reach the location you will come to a highway sign
indicating a sharp curve ahead, with a real estate sign just beyond, and
the curve about 100 yards ahead. We saw the ptarmigan in the woods on the
lake side of the road opposite the highway sign. During the 90 minutes that
we watched it the ptarmigan roosted on a pile of ice at the lake's edge for
about an hour,
and then flew up into a tree and ate buds. A group from the North Country
Bird Club saw the ptarmigan early this afternoon perched in a tree, but I
guess it took them a while to find it. All of the land along the road here
is private, so please respect private property and stay on the road. Based
on the bird's behavior today it seems that if present, it will eventually
show itself if you are patient.

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Lapland Longspur + Nassau County (Late Report)

2013-01-08 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Sorry for the late post, but this past weekend, Mary Beth Billerman, Ernie
Lewis and I went birding around some spots in southern Nassau County. On
Sunday, we found the continuing two male EURASIAN WIGEONS at the Massapequa
Preserve (in the creek along the edge of the pond best accessed from the
east side of the Preserve, near Harding Street). The birds have been at
this pond the past few times I have seen them at the Preserve. We were
unable to locate the hybrid wigeon that had been with them during previous
visits. Also present at the Massapequa Preserve are continuing good
numbers of Winter Wrens (at least 8 on a short walk through the woods), 3
Fox Sparrows, and other good winter birds.

At Jones Beach on Saturday, we encountered 3 COMMON REDPOLLS in the median
at West End near the turnaround, where there has been a lot of activity
lately. We also found a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the swale at the West End 2
Parking Lot loosely associating with Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. We
were unable to locate Harlequin Ducks or Purple Sandpipers at Point
Lookout, but there were very good numbers of both Red-breasted Mergansers
and Long-tailed Ducks just off the beach, in much higher numbers than I've
seen at this location over the past 2 weeks.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - Huntington (YES)

2013-01-02 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Nick Sly, Emilie Ospina and I, as well as several other birders saw the
TUFTED DUCK this morning between 7:30 and 8:00, initially viewed from
Halesite Park. It then flew south across the harbor, and was probably then
best viewed from the Harbor Club parking lot (although still visible from
Halesite Park). The bird was still present when we left around 8:00 at the
south end of Huntington Harbor.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeons - Massapequa +

2012-12-14 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This morning, I checked the Massapequa Preserve in Nassau County for the
previously reported *Eurasian Wigeons*, and found there were 2 males. In
addition to the two adult male Eurasian Wigeons, there was a male Eurasian
x American Wigeon *hybrid* with the American Wigeons. This was all at the
pond due east of Pittsburgh Avenue in the Massapequa Preserve. Corey
Finger joined me there, and we then headed to Jones Beach, where we were
treated to a nice flock of *White-winged Crossbills* at West End, and later
3 *Harlequin Ducks* at Point Lookout.

My eBird list with photos of the wigeons (both Eurasian and the hybrid) are
here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12287191

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern - Cupsogue County Park

2012-07-06 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, Mary Beth Billerman and I headed to the Cupsogue flats to
see what was around. Shorebird numbers were much higher than they were on
Sunday, with good numbers of Short-billed Dowitchers and Semipalmated
Sandpipers, as well as a couple of Western Willets with the Eastern. The
highlight was undoubtedly the basic plumage SANDWICH TERN that briefly
landed among the loafing tern flock around 3:40 PM. It stuck around for
only about 10 minutes before it disappeared without us seeing it take off.
Also around were 6 ROSEATE TERNS.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island birding: 29-30 Dec 2011

2011-12-30 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Over the past two days, Nick Sly and I have birded a variety of locations
across Long Island. On Thursday (29-Dec), we checked the Massapequa
Preserve, where we were doing some scouting for the Southern Nassau CBC.
There, highlights included Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, and 2 Fox
Sparrows. Later in the day, we headed to Point Lookout with Drew Panko,
Trudy Battaly, and Mary Beth Billerman where we had 3 *Harlequin Ducks* (1
male, 2 female), 6 *Common Eider*, 1 *Red-necked Grebe* (in the inlet), and
1 adult *Black-legged Kittiwake* flying from east to west on the ocean
south of the inlet.

Today (Friday, 30-Dec), Nick Sly, Mary Beth Billerman and I headed east
toward Montauk. While conditions seemed less than ideal for concentrating
good numbers of seabirds, we were pleasantly surprised by what we saw.
There were 10+ thousand scoters (all three species) and thousands of Common
Eider. Good numbers of Razorbill were also flying past the point (over 100
over the course of the morning flew past the point between the lighthouse
and Camp Hero), and a single *Common Murre* that we observed sitting on the
water from Camp Hero. We also saw 19 *Purple Sandpipers* on A quick
check of Montauk Harbor turned up no cormorants, but there was an
adult *Iceland
Gull* loafing with the Herring Gulls on the jetty.

We ended the day watching the *Mountain Bluebird* in its usual spot just
east of Hulse Landing Rd. along Rt. 25a.

Good birding,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ross's Geese

2011-03-06 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi John,

I thought I'd chime in on this discussion. On October 24, 2008, Tom Johnson
and I had 9 Ross's Geese on the Main Pool on the Wildlife Drive of Montezuma
National Wildlife Refuge.

This data, and high count data for all other species recorded in the state
can be found in eBird. For NY, this data can be seen here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/sightings?locInfo.regionType=subnational1=high_count=1900=true=2011=US-NY

High count data can also be found for individual counties, hotspots, or
Important Bird Areas.

While some historical data may be missing and not yet entered, high count
data (especially for NY) is very complete and up-to-date.

It is difficult to tell, but I do believe that this is likely the first
record of a Blue Ross' Goose for NY. It's a spectacular find, and has been
nicely documented.

indicate a single bird. If I didn't miss records, this is only the second
time that (5) birds have been present in New York. I also looked for
records of Blue-phase Ross's Geese and found none. John Haas

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Varied Thrush - Yes

2010-12-12 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

The VARIED THRUSH was seen around 1 PM today (Sunday) foraging on the ground
beside the bathroom and maintenance building. Also present was a Hermit
Thrush and Eastern Towhee, among the more common birds. Further down the
park, along 5th Ave. near 62nd St. was a large flock of Common Grackles and
a calling Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Good birding,

Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] West End 2 - White-winged Crossbill

2010-12-11 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, after searching unsuccessfully for the Hermit Warbler at
Sunken Meadow, we went to West End. The Coast Guard Station had 3 Harlequin
Ducks, as well as many actively feeding Bonaparte's Gulls. On the very far
side of the bay, there were many thousands of Brant on the water.

After an unproductive walk along the edge of the median, we heard and saw a
single young male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL that landed and fed in the pines at
the turn-around for 5-10 minutes before flying west again.

Other than that, there was little of note. We briefly checked, but did not
see the Loggerhead Shrike at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary.

Good birding,

Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End 2 - Cave Swallow

2010-11-24 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, roughly between 1 and 2 PM, my mom and I observed one CAVE
SWALLOW foraging around the West End 2 parking lot and the far west entrance
to the parking lot. It was loosely associating with some Tree Swallows, but
seemed to be avoiding the larger group of them that would occasionally rest
on the ground. The Cave Swallow was often foraging low and would disappear
for five or more minutes at a time before suddenly reappearing. The bird
appeared to be an adult. The NORTHERN SHRIKE also put in a brief appearance
near the boardwalk to the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary. There was little of
interest seen from the Coast Guard Station, although it looked like a very
large flock of Bonaparte's Gulls (several thousand) had gathered on the far
side of the bay.

Good birding,

Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach - Black-headed Gull

2010-11-23 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

Today, Drew Panko, Trudy Battaly and I headed down to Jones Beach for some
birding. We stopped first at the Coast Guard Station, where a lone RED
CROSSBILL flew over, heading west. Some Pine Siskins and Purple Finches
also flew over. When checking the sandbar, among the 75 or so American
Oystercatchers and scattered Bonaparte's Gulls was a single WILLET and a
young BLACK-HEADED GULL. After watching it for 10-15 minutes, it eventually
flew off to the middle of the bay to the west. There were also 2
White-winged Scoters and 1 Black Scoter int he bay. Little else was moving
around the Coast Guard Station. In the swale by the West End 2 parking lot
were a group of ~30 Tree Swallows resting and foraging. At the Theodore
Roosevelt Center, we also found the NORTHERN SHRIKE close to the beginning
of the boardwalk.

After birding West End, we headed to check Captree for the Common Ground
Dove, which we could not find. We searched the north end of the south
parking lot and the area near the green bouy/toll booths.

A quick check of the ocean from the Fire Island Hawk Watch platform held
some Northern Gannets and many Bonaparte's Gulls streaming to the west.

Good Birding,

Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End - Buff-breasted Sandpiper

2010-08-21 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, Mary Beth Billerman and I took a trip down to West End to
see what shorebirds we could turn up. It was approaching high tide, and
between the tide and the people on the island, there were no shorebirds
evident on the small island by the Coast Guard Station. We then went to the
swale on the south side of West End 2 parking lot. With the rising tide,
shorebirds continued to fly into the swale. We eventually found the
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER that Doug had found earlier in the day. It was
foraging actively the entire time we were there, mostly at the south end of
the swale, moving back and forth between the southeast corner and the
southwest corner of the swale. Also present were about 160 Semipalmated
Plovers, mostly adults (but with some juveniles), 40 Semipalmated Sandpipers
(again, mostly adults, but with at least 3 juveniles), 10 Sanderlings
(adults) 1 Least Sandpiper, 1 Greater Yellowlegs (flyover), and 1
Black-bellied Plover (flyover). Also foraging in the swale were 3 Horned
Larks.

The Buff-breasted Sandpiper was present during our entire stay of about 2
hours, but was at times out of view.

On our way home along Wantagh Parkway, a Merlin flew over our car moving
south.

Good birding,

Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] Western Grebe - Chimney Bluffs State Park, Wayne County

2010-03-20 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

I haven't seen this bird reported in several days on nysbirds:

The WESTERN GREBE that has been being seen since March 11 at Chimney Bluffs
State Park in Wayne County was again seen today by many observers. Today,
the bird was associating with a small group of Red-necked Grebes. The grebe
was visible from the main parking lot of the park off of Garner Road. The
coordinates from which we viewed the bird from are: 43.28, -76.922602

In the Montezuma Wetlands Complex today was a EURASIAN WIGEON at Tschache
Pool, and 2 SANDHILL CRANES at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Road.

Good birding,

I met Tom and Donna Gooley at about 9:15 this morning in Rouses Point. The
gull was still present when I left at about 10:00. I think it will stay
around as long as ice fishermen keep cleaning their fish on the ice and
provide it with a reliable food source..

The duck was still present as of noon today. I saw it from the entrance road
to the Ausable Point Camp Ground, but it would also have been visible from
Rte-9. I prefer the entrance road because it has less trafic.
