[nysbirds-l] Patchogue and Bellport

2021-04-02 Thread leormand
A pair of eagles was recently seen on a nest in Patchogue village atop a
communications tower. Osprey had been harassing the eagles since their return
and today the osprey pair were tending to the nest. A similar series of events
happened last year atop a communications tower in Sayville. I would assume this
to be the same pair of eagles.

I spotted a pair of eagles (presumably the village pair) kiting above Robinsons
Pond in E Patchogue early this afternoon.

At the Bellport docks, a lone common loon was in the bay along with 5 red
breasted mergansers (1 male, 4 female).

[nysbirds-l] Mill road - Yaphank

2020-05-26 Thread leormand
I walked some town and county open space properties on either side of Mill Rd
in Yaphank today. The northern side Is a successional cedar forest and aside
from ticks didn’t seem to hold much activity other than chipping sparrows and a
surprise flyover by a glossy ibis. There was at least one indigo bunting but I
suspect many more given size of property and habitat.

The south side is typical pine oak forest and held the expected species
including a few great views of oven birds. I also stumbled upon a female turkey
and her young poults.

[nysbirds-l] Eastport Meadows, Eastport NY

2020-05-15 Thread leormand
Late this morning I made a stop along the southwest side of “Eastport Meadows”
a large Town of Brookhaven open space parcel south of Sunrise Highway, North of
Montauk Highway. The Eastport Athletic Complex is in the northeast corner for
reference.

In a section of open woods I found a black and white warbler and several
woodpeckers While bushwhacking through pine scrub forest I stumbled upon an
eastern towhee nest.

The open successional forest held an eastern meadowlark, more towhees and
singing prairie warblers.

I then walked a bit of the dirt road under the LIPA wires and had dozens of
cedar waxwings taking turns drinking from puddles, a screeching red-tailed
hawk, a hummingbird flitting around Oak trees, several blue winged warblers,
yellow warblers and American redstarts.

I’d imagine early morning under the right conditions would yield an even better
array of birds. Ironically, when I got home to my suburban yard my wife called
me over to look at a “red bird with black wings”. It’s the first scarlet
tanager I’ve ever seen after all my years looking.

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL and downtown Riverhead

2020-01-10 Thread leormand
I had a few minutes to drive through EPCAL and was disappointed to miss all
species of raptor. On my way out I had a half dozen or so bluebirds hanging in
the trees along the entrance way, just north of the lake.

Spending the afternoon in the Hyatt’s ballroom overlooking the river I watched
a pair of turkey vultures cruise back and fourth for a few hours. I also
observed a bald eagle On the south side of the river perched in a tree (this
sighting is 90% confident as the bird was at quite a distance with no
binoculars or camera).

[nysbirds-l] Where do ravens go - brookhaven

2019-04-19 Thread leormand
Yesterday (4-18-19) John Turner and I took a tour of the Brookhaven landfill
including a drive to the top. Much to our surprise we observed at least 6
ravens (they all appeared paired up).

Ravens were observed feeding and being chased by various gull species. I’m not
aware of any raven nests immediately adjacent to the landfill but know they
have been in Patchogue and Farmingville (town hall) and other surrounding areas
in recent years.

[nysbirds-l] South shore - Suffolk + EPCAL

2018-03-31 Thread leormand
Dune road was quiet - no sign of owls or harriers. Shinnecock bay held some
oyster catchers, brant, long-tailed ducks, black scorers and common eiders and
the occasional loon.

Along the roadside ditches were a large number of great egrets.

I visited EPCAL briefly and barely got out of the car. Grey ghost was present
and there were a good number of kestrels.

The mouth of Carmans river had 7 osprey in view at one point. A pair of
shovelers was s nice surprise - no sign of bald eagle.

[nysbirds-l] Sub adult bald eagle - forge river - mastic

2018-03-28 Thread leormand
I just observed an osprey chasing a subadult bald eagle along the forge river
at the Montauk Highway spillway. The eagle perched on the west side of the
river and the osprey retreated back to its nest on the south side of the river.

Rough-legged hawk
“Grey Ghost” harrier
Flock of bluebirds (male and female)
Several red-tailed hawks

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL and Dune Road

2018-03-18 Thread leormand
A brief visit to EPCAL produced few birds. A pair of bluebirds bear the nesting
boxes, a couple red-tailed hawks and one kestrel were the only things
noteworthy.

On the way to the south shore I observed an adult bald eagle near Pleasure
Drive and Sunrise Highway flying very high.

Dune road was also quiet with no raptors seen. A red-breasted merganser was in
a roadside ditch providing unusually close views and large raft of common eider
were inside the inlet.

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL, Dune Road

2018-02-17 Thread leormand
At EPCAL around noon it was quiet, but there were a number of red tailed hawks
and a harrier on the western runway.

Dune Road has a peregrine, snowy owl and Brant. Inlet was quiet, but another
birder said there was a large raft of eider that has been spooked by a coast
guard boat.

On the way home there was a subadult eagle flying over sunrise at carmans river
in Brookhaven hamlet.

[nysbirds-l] Swan river - great (frozen) South Bay

2018-01-10 Thread leormand
On my morning run I went down to pine neck dock at the mouth of swan river in
East Patchogue. The bay is still frozen over and the mouth of the river had one
small pocket of open water remaining. A number of mute swans were loafing on
the ice and a few dozen ducks were swimming in the opening (I believe they were
scaup). One duck stood out which I soon realized was a golden eye.
If you’re in the area may be worth a visit to take some nice photos as the
opening is close to the dock (which is free of ice and snow).

Interestingly there is quite a bit of open water on swan river south of Swezey
Avenue bridge

[nysbirds-l] dune road

2018-01-06 Thread leormand .
This afternoon I drove the length of Dune road and spent a little time at
the inlet. It was dead low tide at the inlet and there were a lot of ducks
feeding and getting out of the wind on the western side. Most appeared to
be red-breasted mergansers, but there were also surf scoters, black scoters
and the single numbers of various other winter waterfowl. No eiders
observed (though a few seals poppped up).

Dune Road yielded one extremely well hidden Snowy Owl as well as a number
of northern harriers include a grey ghost.

[nysbirds-l] Large mixed duck flock - Patchogue village

There was a large raft of ducks (mostly scaup and buffleheads) just east of

the boardwalk but also spooked easily. They were there at 10:30 AM and again at
