[nysbirds-l] Help Needed for Shorebirds
Folks help is needed to protect critical shorebird habitat. The rain puddles at Miller Field on Staten Island are being drained by a contractor who was hired by NPS. The contractor said that they were told that there were no nesting birds there or anything else of concern by NPS and Fish and Wildlife. Please can everyone get involved and email to help stop this. [nysbirds-l] Pacific loon at breezy point
About 115. I refound the bird down by the private property sign that is east of the entrance road. It is in with a large flock of red throated loons that keeps lifting up and flying east towards Fort Tilden. In one pass, I counted 88 red throated loons, which is the most I have seen here. [nysbirds-l] Mississippi Kites on Staten Island
There have been 2 sightings of Mississippi Kites this morning on Staten Island. Anthony had one flying over Mt Loretto unique area earlier this morning. I just had one fly over my house in St George moving north. So those in Brooklyn or Manhattan should keep an eye on the skies. Amazingly that is my 3rd Mississippi Kite over my house in the last 10 years. The kingnird has been moving north up the road towards crookes point. So drive
your car away from Hiylan Boulevard in the direction that you came into the
park and keep going until you get to the last parking lot on your left. After
that the road becomes a permit only gravel road that you can walk on. The king
bird was last seen near the end of the paved road flying into the marina. There
should be quite a few bitders up there

[nysbirds-l] Brown Booby on Staten Island
An adult Brown Booby was first found in NJ very close to NY waters. I was able to re find it clearly on the New York side along with Seth Wollney. Best public access to where it was flying around is at the intersection of Van Name Avenue and Richmond Terrace. Look out towards NJ. Use these coordinates 40.636885, -74.152865. There is a small pier you can walk out on at a few feet away at the end of Van Pelt and Richmond Terrace. [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher on Staten Island
Spotted by Catherine Barron at Fort Wadsworth. Park at lower lot near jetty and walk along road to the west. Note that you can’t drive that road and have to park below campground. Bird seen on road and along beach about 50 yards down from the last wooden log on side of road. Beach access via the first path on left you get to which is where Catherine found the bird. [nysbirds-l] Franklin’s Gull update on Staten Island
The bird flew away a few minutes after I saw it and hasn’t returned but there are gulls cycling in and out of that puddle all day long. Interestingly it came in with three Laughing Gulls and all of the Laughing Gulls started to display and call and the Franklins did as well. When the Laughing Gulls flew off it it flew off with them. [nysbirds-l] Burrowing Owl info
The bird was sitting on the fence in the back of a make shift maintenance yard that is on your left immediately after you pull into big egg marsh which is at the end of cross bay boulevard. The bird was easily viewed from the road. I have no idea if the bird will stay in the maintenance yard if the cranes that are parked there are being active but I would think it’s highly likely that it won’t. However there’s tons of suitable habitat in the area as lots of construction is going on and there are posts set up all over the place. The bird was last seen hunting out in the marsh as it was dark. There’s plenty of public parking and as long as the birders stay out of the way of the construction vehicles I don’t see any reason at all not to go and try for this bird. The baseball fields are still open to the public and while the owl was there there were probably 40 cars parked there for the kids softball game. This is not a closed off or restricted area in case that wasn’t clear. [nysbirds-l] Varied Thrush on staten island
The bird is a clove Lakes Park on the north side of Brooks pond behind the church. It is just off of clove Road and the intersection of Forest Avenue. You have to walk to the water and it has returned two times to a green tangle right on the pond that is close to a thin ice sign and an exercise station. Currently there are 14 Roseates on the beach out near the jetty. All roosting near each other. Way more than I've ever seen out here being that my previous high was 1. [nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach seabirds
Not to be a buzzkill but just want to remind people that while situations like this are great for birders they are very bad for the birds. While walking into the beach I was literally hit by a Great Shearwater near the entrance. Talking to a beach employee he told me that 25 were taken in to a rehabber on Long Beach and we found at least 10 exhausted birds that they were holding over night at Nickerson. All birds seemed well fed and they just had no energy left. Near dark I took 2 more out of the surf and put them behind little sand castles to shelter them from the wind. Very sad to see. During my time seawatching I had the following. 75+ Great Shearwater 5 Corey's 1 Manx 2 Sooty 1 Parastic Jaeger came onshore at sundown and buzzed the east Tern colony. I just relocated the bird on the beach at Midland Beach. This is directly across from the pine trees where the red crossbill was seen for most of the winter. For the second time this week Dick Veit has found a yellow headed blackbird on Staten Island. There is currently a female at great kills park. It is in with a flock of brown headed cowbirds. Being seen on both sides of the road near the playground that is under construction. Just a word of warning. The area behind the field station is off limits. The bird has been seen going in there but please do not go in there as you will be ticketed by the cops. Dave Eib and Seth Wollney found a female Barrows Goldeneye on the pond at Moravian Cemetery. This is exactly where it was seen a few years back so most likely a returning bird. The unbelievably sporadic female Crossbill just put in it's typical two second appearance in the Pines right in front of the field eight backstop just off the edge of Millerfield. Bird is ranging widely. It left the Wolfes pond side of the path and flew across to the field on the other side where Mike Shanley originally found it. Bird is currently feeding on the far edge of the field in some trees that border Raritan Bay. The point is it's roaming over a large area so some effort will be needed to find it. To access the field follow the same path at the end of Holton Avenue and you will see two concrete barriers on your right. Cross over the barriers and into the field. [nysbirds-l] Henslows Sparrow on Staten Island at Fort Wadsworth
Seen twice well. I know these birds and have spent time watching them on their breeding grounds near Chicago more than once. There are a few weedy fields between the parking area near the jetty and the actual jetty. Bird first seen on the wood chip path that parallels the water in between the 2 teees by the harbor. There is a falling over tree near the beach. Going towards jetty there is a smaller tree and then a larger tree that is 50 feet away. Then seen again in the thinner grass near the fence and the rock pile. Right near the national rent a fence sign and a huge white rock behind it. Earlier this morning there was a grasshopper sparrow here. Not seen on afternoonn visit. But there is another ammodramus as well that I only got fleeting views of. Think it's a nelsons/salt marsh. Also present are lots of other sparrows and a Meadowlark. While leaving the fisherman lot at Tilden at dusk I turned into the main road near the entrance to the silver gull club. Landed on the ground in front of the car was a small nightjar. It stayed a few moments and then was flushed by a car leaving the Silver Gull. When it flew it had rounded wings with no white in the wings and white tips to the tail. Bird flew towards Breezy. [nysbirds-l] Ft. TIlden, Queens sea watch
Encouraged by reports from out east I made my way to the beach. Did a 3.5 hour watch. Zero seabirds seen, not even distant unidentifiable ones. However there were 2 highlights. In a flock of 4 Royal Terns was a single Sandwhich Tern. Total of 6 Royals seen. The biggest surprise was completely unexpected. I saw 3 swallows far out over the water and watched them for quite a while as they fought the wind and came towards land. Eventually they reached the beach very close to where I was. They were small, square tailed birds with chestnut foreheads and buff throats. All appeared to be Cave Swallows. Lost them as they flew east towards Riis. Only guess would be Caribbean race caught in storm? Birded from 4:00 pm until dark. 1 marbled Godwit. 1 American Golden Plover 2 Caspian Terns. Continuing adult and young bird spent most of time on spit in front of island. The Godwit and plover both stayed on the pond for about a minute each. Peregrine buzzed the pond multiple times and birds flew in and quickly flew off. Both birds landed on first spit after dead mans cove at north end. [nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit at Wolfes Pond Park
Really sorry for the late post but I left my phone at home. Bird landed on the beach in with a flock of BB Plovers and Ruddy Turnstones. Almost entirely in winter plumaged. First alerted to its presence because it was calling which I have never heard before. It stayed there for about 10 seconds and then flew south towards New Jersey and the South Amboy area. Seen at 7:15 pm. Birded the wrong tide so I can't speak for what was there on high tide but there were maybe 50 shorebirds in total on the east pond at low tide. Only bird of note was my first juvenile shorebird of the year. A juvenile Least Sandpiper at the south end in with a group of 9 other Leasts (all adults). [nysbirds-l] Adult Baird's sandpiper on east pond at Jamaica Bay
First found the bird on the first spit south of dead mans cove. It then flew across the pond and landed opposite the island. Again very few birds here. Birds are extremely wary and keep flushing all the time when a train passes or an osprey flies over or the wind blows. Stilt Sandpipers down to 8 SB Dowitchers down to 22 No sign of the Pectoral Only increase is there are now 19 Semipalmated Plovers. [nysbirds-l] Arctic Tern at Breezy Point
I met an Australian birder at Jamaica Bay who really wanted to see Piping Plovers so I took him to breezy point. I was expecting it to pour on us so I left my camera and phone in the car. We parked at Tilden and walked a good ways down the beach until we found a large loafing flock. Mixed in with them was a first summer Arctic Tern. Seen on the ground through scope for about 2 minutes among common terns and then seen in flight as well when birds were flushed by a beach walker. Bird flew off over the ocean and I lost it flying out to sea. Also present were 7 1st summer Common Terns. I was eventually chased off the beach by an angry and hostile Breezy resident who was completely unimpressed by an Arctic Tern on "his" beach. Bird was seen about 5:45 and I've just gotten back to the car. Park at entrance off of Amboy Road. Walk up main path and soon there will be a path on left. Maybe 100 feet in is a wooden bridge. Bird was first heard singing a full song a couple times and then seen there. It flew towards main path and landed in brush bordering the main path just before a culvert spills out into a tiny puddle. I left the bird there. Just had an almost full breeding plumage Curlew Sandpiper in the marsh. There are close to 1000 birds here including a couple hundred Red Knot. Loads of Dunlin plus Shot-billed Dowitcher Semi sands and plovers Least sandpiper Turnstone Willet Black-bellied Plover Tide is out now and birds flying all over the place.
