Subject: [nysbirds-l] Dune Road - Not about Birds, but for Birders

As of 23 May, the Town of Southampton has amended it’s parking rules, requiring
a Current Resident Only Parking Permit for all town beaches and Trustee Roads.
This rule is in effect 7 days a week, with no exception, regardless of the lot
attendants being present or not. This is a major change from all previous
years, and is in effect from 9AM - 9PM. All Town beaches along the ocean,
Shinnecock Bay, and Peconic Bay, and beach access roads - any beach road which
has signs posted - included. No Day Permits or Non-Resident Permits are being
issued at this time. Code Enforcement Officers are patrolling the area.

More information is available on the Town of Southampton web site, under Parks
and Recreation. Cupsogue and the Westhampton Dunes Overlook are not affected,
however, Pikes, Tiana, and Town of Southampton parts of Shinnecock West are.

[nysbirds-l] Common Gallinule, Southampton

2016-12-11 Thread Thomas Moran
Sorry for the late post.

Yesterday, Saturday, December 10, at 2pm, there was a Common Gallinule on
Coopers Neck Pond in Southampton. The bird appeared from the reeds in back
of the pond, opposite and slightly to the left of the only place you can
view the pond from. It swam to the middle of the pond, returned to the reeds
and could not be found again after about 30 minutes of looking. A quick stop
at 4pm also came up empty. Pictures are available.

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue Directions

2013-07-06 Thread Thomas Moran
For what it's worth, focusing only on content, and ignoring for the minute
the intended/unintended slights of the prior emails:

The original map was a good idea, people from different states and remote
areas of NY wanted to come to Cupsogue to see the bird. Maybe it could have
been tuned up through an exchange of emails, maybe off-line. But.

The destination and routes were, in fact, incorrectly marked.

I'm glad someone pointed this out. Visitors needed to know.

I'm also glad someone pointed out that if visitors to the area have not been
out in the bay on foot, relying on a map alone may not be a good idea. I
personally would never have gone out there except for my participation in an
Eastern Long Island Audubon walk there once. If I had driven from afar to
see this bird, I would have been flummoxed (I'm trying to give Bob another
reason to crack the dictionary, an activity we both enjoy, see his prior
email) by the bay, tides, currents and routes: perils pointed out in a prior
email. Alerting visitors to possible safety concerns when appropriate is
even more important than directions on how to locate a target bird. As a
result, both, the map and the comments concerning not relying exclusively on
a map, were appropriate.

As almost all birders are saying hi in the parking lot, visitors would have
felt welcome to tag along with locals. This was a good suggestion: let
visitors know that local birders were an option.

Were slights intended? I personally don't read it that way - but I can see
how it could have been read that way. In the end, useful information
concerning visitors' ability to make a safe sighting was provided, the
purpose of the website. Maybe the web master can encourage an end to this
because I'd rather read about.bird sightings, the purpose of the website.

Respectfully to all concerned,

Tom Moran

Shoreham

[nysbirds-l] Arctic, Roseate, Black Terns at Cupsogue

2013-06-28 Thread Thomas Moran
On Friday, June 28 from 11am to 1:30pm Cassy, my sister up from Florida,
myself and Andrew Baksh, birded Cupsogue. The previously reported
Arctic(first summer birds), Roseate, and Black Terns(seen in three phases:
breeding, mottled and juvenile) remain. Also seen were breeding and
alternate plumage Red Knots, as well as Short-billed Dowitchers. At first, I
thought I had blown our chance to see these species because when my sister
and I arrived, the tide was high and the central mudflat was completely
immersed. Across the channel were two Arctic Terns, which I would never have
identified because the easiest field marking, their short legs, were under
water. Over the next few hours, Andrew helped us recognize many other ways
of identifying Arctic Terns and Roseates. The high tide actually turned out
to be very advantageous as no land was left for the birds to land on but a
small spit about 20 yards from where we were. As a result, we had terrific
views of the previously mentioned species and Black Skimmers and Ruddy
Turnstones.

We did not see the Red-necked Phalarope at a short stop at Pike's Beach.

Later, east of Tiana Beach, we saw Piping Plover and Semipalmated Plover.

Along Dune Rd we had a great view of a Black-crowned Night Heron right next
to the road.

[nysbirds-l] NFP/Arshamomaque Preserve

2013-03-30 Thread Thomas Moran
Bob Adamo and I had a relatively slow half day of birding this morning. We
started at the east pond of the North Fork Preserve where we saw about 6
pair of Green-winged Teal and a pair of Northern Shovelers doing the circle
thing. We then went to Arshamomaque Preserve were we spotted the previously
reported flock of Rusty Blackbirds, which included the three plumages:
breeding male, female and juvenile. We also had an Osprey. Twice during the
day I saw crows mobbing a bird of prey. First, on Middle Rd near Mattituck,
Bob and I saw a crow mobbing a Cooper's Hawk. Later at EPCAL I saw two crows
mobbing a Red-Tailed Hawk. Another sign of spring nesting season!?

[nysbirds-l] 3/16 South Shore

2013-03-17 Thread Thomas Moran

On Saturday Bob Adamo and I missed the Long-Eared Owl (which was seen by Sy
Schiff at 8:30am) at the Marine Nature Center in Oceanside, the Harlequin
Ducks (which was seen by Seth Ausubel and Rich Kelly earlier) at Point
Lookout, the Gyrfalcon at Gilgo and the Red-necked Grebe at Cap Tree our
perseverance paid off.

While at Point Lookout we saw several Horned Grebes, one of which was
showing some gold in the ear tufts. American Oystercatchers were on the
beach to the west of the jetties, two were also seen later at the Jones
Beach Coast Guard Station. On the beach was a possibly distressed Harbor
Seal. The seal lay on its left side only, its fur tinged red at its lower
extremities, and the white of its left eye was blood red, it allowed someone
to get within 25 feet. Bob reported it to Riverhead Foundation for Marine
Research and Preservation.

At the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station along the road before the parking
area were an immature White Crowned Sparrow, American Tree Sparrows, and
Dark-eyed Juncos. At the Gazebo, Bob, and another birder, called out a small
flock of Horned Larks.. and mixed in was the previously reported Lapland
Longspur, a lifer, which Steve Walter helped me pick out of the crowd. There
were about dozen Common Loons present. Among a small number of Horned Grebes
was another showing some gold in the ear tufts. A Savannah Sparrow was also
feeding apart from the others near the gazebo.

Finally at Captree, we saw a few Boat-tailed Grackles. They sang on the top
of boats at dock and were on the sand spit across the dock.

[nysbirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk

2012-05-26 Thread Thomas Moran
At 7:30pm Arlene Rawls and I saw a Rough-legged Hawk over the west runway at
EPCAL. It hovered then settled on a fence post affording us a good look at
its back and head. It was a light morph. It flew into the woods on the other
side of Rt 25. On entering the woods, a second bird joined it, but we didn't
see where it came from.

[nysbirds-l] Rocky Point DEC Prairie Warblers

2012-05-07 Thread Thomas Moran
Following up on Luke Ormand's post, I visited the DEC land south of Whiskey

primarily under the power lines were Prairie Warbler, Eastern Towhee,
Eastern Kingbird, and on the trail on the east side of the road were a pair
of vocal Great Crested Flycatchers.

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eaqle-Carman's River, Bellport

2012-05-06 Thread Thomas Moran
A got a good look at a mature Bald Eagle at the end of Beaver Dam Rd,
Bellport. The bird flew a distance to the north up the Carman's River,
gaining height, where it joined two other birds. I believe these were also
Bald Eagles, but because of the distance cannot be positive. Also seen where
Ospreys and Glossy Ibis.
