2024-04-21 Thread Tom Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City -
Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21 -

A Virginia Rail continued at the Pond, near Gapstow Bridge in the parks
southeast section, from Saturday into all day Sunday. Thanks to D. RIcci for an
initial report, with photos now archived in the Macaulay Library, via eBird.
More on some of the 85-plus species of birds seen in Central Park this weekend,
at a later time.

Good birding to all,

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail, etc. - Manhattan, NYC

2024-04-04 Thread Tom Fiore
By Wednesday eve. of April 3rd, hundreds of observers had come to see a
Virginia Rail --stranded-- in Bryant Park for at least several days since first
being publicly reported there, this is smack-dab in the middle of downtown
Manhattan, N.Y. City one city block west of Times Square. The rail most
recently in the sw quadrant of that park. It is a species that shows -or hides-
both in that park and more-generally around Manhattan urban areas virtually
each spring, and also is vastly more-common as a migrant than many realize.
This is not a rare species, but is of course rather rarely-seen except by those
who seek them out - or, to some extent, who have long worked in bird-rehab as
well as on other urban-bird issues, just referring to the city that never
sleeps, N.Y. City and specifically to Manhattan. At least one Purple Sandpiper
was still present thru Mon., April 1st at a long-standing site this year, Pier
26 on the Hudson river off lower Manhattan. Good numbers of amongst many other
species, sparrows which lately included more-of White-throated Sparrow have
been all around New York County, indicating initial movements of these. Many
have been increasingly singing at times, as have Red Fox Sparrows also in good,
if more-limited numbers and locations. Better chances for a lot more local
migration come by at-least this Monday, and subsequently, if forecasting by
meteorologists can be believed!

Good birding to all,

Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail ,Oceanside MNSA, Nassua County

2022-11-09 Thread kevin rogers
Hi All,
Today at sunset some friends and I saw a small rail fly low across the small
cut by the first left-hand grated path near the beginning of the main trail at
the MNSA, ...we managed to stay with the bird just barely as it moved first up
the cut and then it was under the grated path and flew back to the cutone
last walk down that path brought some luck and some photos were acquired as it
walked to an open muddy area and stood still for a few seconds on the left side
of the path about halfway down.  A photo will be up on the MNSA Fb page. Wanted
to get the word out in case it sticks!! Kind Regards-Kev

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail, Rusty Blackbird - Tifft Nature Preserve - Buffalo

2020-03-26 Thread Joseph Fell
I took a walk to Tifft on Tuesday 3-24-20 and had Virginia Rail off Old
Tifft St (reported previously by P. Corrigan). Also in that area was at
least 1 Rusty Blackbird (although it was possible there may have been more).

The Mute Swan previously reported by A. Nowicki was also present, along
with a nice variety of other expected waterfowl. This was the first time I
have seen a Mute Swan at Tifft.

The full checklist can be seen here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S66188526

David and Marilyn, I apologize for not mentioning the rail. I was more
excited about the Rusty!

The Virginia Rail was still in Abington Square Park (West Village, NYC) today
as of 5PM. It was spending most of the time foraging in shrubbery (and not

There is a Virginia Rail in Prospect Park, in a small patch of phragmites

some patience, unlike the one last month. Getting late for them, too, I
think.

First reported yesterday by Kathy Toomey as a briefly seen small rail sp.

I had to stop at my office 49/Madison before heading down to Dead & Co. at MSG
thought I'd stop and look for Virginia rail no luck but at 430 pm in front of
110 W 49 in same grouping of plantings just further west, I saw a song sparrow,
catbird, male E. Towhee and a thrush which I am quite sure was Bicknell's. Now
I suck at differentiating these thrushes and of course it was not singing but
tail seemed much redder than grey cheek or Swainson's. No idea when each
migrates. Who knew; quite the spot. Maybe John Mayer will sing birdsong
Tonight. As an aside I then walked south through Times Sq. Wtf. Why would
anyone go there. Ever. Good birding in strange places if you look at it right

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail - 30-Oct (49th St. and 6th Ave., Manhattan)

2015-10-30 Thread Ben Cacace
I just received a note from Evan Cutler that he's
spotted a Virginia Rail, last seen tonight just before 6:30pm, in the
shrubbery on the northwest corner of 6th Ave. and 49th St. across from 30
Rockefeller Center (30 Rock). It appears to be healthy and feeding in the
patch.

This is the wiki page developed for the shared location 'East Side of 1251
6th Ave.; 49th-50th St., Manhattan' which has had its share of good birds:

http://ebirding-nys.wikispaces.com/East+Side+of+1251+6th+Ave.%3B+49th-50th+St.%2C+Manhattan

It's probably the yahoo account that is bouncing his posts to the lists.

Ben Cacace posting for Evan Cutler.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail in Central Park (Manhattan)

2015-04-23 Thread David Barrett
Just a follow-up on the Virginia Rail: I have seen a discussion on another
board suggesting this bird *may* have been released by the Wild Bird Fund.
It is too late to confirm either way, but I wanted people to know that
there is some question of provenance before they go out of their way to try
to see it.

2015-04-23 Thread David Barrett
There is an apparently reliable (yet still unconfirmed) eBird report this
evening (April 23) of a *Virginia Rail* in the Loch, which is the small
stream in the North End of Central Park.

The last Virginia Rail known to visit Central Park, in September 2013,
stayed overnight at least once. Tonight's moderate NW winds would suggest
an overnight stay is possible. So you may want check the Loch tomorrow, at
various times of day. The last one was not seen again, despite extensive
searching, until the following evening.

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail at Bayard Cutting Arboretum

2012-01-21 Thread John Gluth
Just before 3:30 this afternoon at Bayard Cutting Arboretum (Great River,
Suffolk Co.), while tallying ducks, geese and swans for the NYSOA Waterfowl
Count, I found a VIRGINIA RAIL. It was feeding along the south shoreline of
the cove that extends off the Connetquot River south of Breezy island (park
map: http://www.bayardcuttingarboretum.com/Media/map.gif). The rail
methodically moved toward the mouth of the cove, diligently probing into
the nooks and crannies in the mud of the undercut bank below the stand of
phragmites lining that side of the cove. The rhizomes of the reeds that
stabilize the bank provided adequate footholds for the rail to clamber over
and hang onto when wind-driven, slush-filled waves lapped at the shore.
The rail also occasionally swam shore distances. The bird was in plain sight
for the entire 10+ minutes I stayed to observe it, by far the longest amount
of time I've had this species in view. The coordinates of the shoreline
where the rail was are: 40.733142, -73.160742. The best vantage point to
observe this spot are at: 40.733818, -73.161434. Waterfowl seen earlier in
my stay included Greater Scaup (33), Lesser Scaup (1), Common Goldeneye (3),
Common Merganser (27), and Hooded Merganser (9).

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail in Midtown!

2011-10-24 Thread Gabriel Willow
Someone sent me a photo of an "unusual bird" they saw this afternoon in Harold
Sq. Park... I get a lot of these messages and assumed it would be a
funny-looking pigeon, but it was actually a Virginia Rail sitting on a stone
bench!

[nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail

2011-01-31 Thread Matthew Clements
Hampton Bays, NY
>From Ponquogue bridge and west:

Sunday afternoon around 3:30 pm the Virginia Rail was very active on Dune Road
at the first road-side water on the north side of the road just west of Triton
Lane. Pardon the tardiness of this post.

Plenty of Harriers, a Kingfisher, medium raft of Goldeneye, but a lot of
hunters which twice sent what I was looking at into flight. No signs of the
bittern but probably there keeping a low profile.

Best Regards,
Matt
