[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove @ Jones Beach Coast Guard Station Parking Lot…

2022-06-09 Thread Andrew Baksh
I picked up a message from Gary Strauss who reports a White-winged Dove at
Jones Beach Coast Guard Station Parking lot. Apparently found by someone else
but Gary did not know her name so I am unable to give her credit.

There have also been reports of both Wilson’s and Red-necked Phalaropes over
the past few days also at Jones Beach Coast Guard Station which have not made
it to the list-serves as far as I know.

It was quite pleasing to get a report from Gary and knowing that he is still
out and about ticking birds.

[nysbirds-l] white-winged dove/cockatiel

2021-06-08 Thread Andrew Block
Had a funny experience today along the Taconic Parkway.  As I was nearing the
northbound exit 8 I saw just above car level and along the side of the road a
bird flying parallel to me that I at first thought was a white-winged dove.  It
had the swift flight of a dove and was about the right size, but as I neared it
and started to pass it It turned out to be a cockatiel!  Go figure.  It had the
ancestral plumage with the white wing patches which is what through me off.  So
if anyone in the Millwood area is missing a cockatiel, it was last seen flying
north at exit 8 of the parkway:-)

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove, Jones Beach 8/5 (Nassau Co)

2019-08-05 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,

Stacey Meyerheinrich found a WWDO along the Bay Parkway near Jones Beach
Field 10. This bird is along the westbound lane perched in a dead black
pine. It was being seen through 11:33 at least.

Similar to the Corncrake situation, there is no legal parking along the
side of the road. The nearest legal parking would be field 10, which is
about 0.3 mi to the west. There are no sidewalks here, just grass.

Google Maps of coordinates:

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove

2017-08-26 Thread Elizabeth Dinapoli
Whilst checking out the Grasspipers on Doctor's Path, Stacy Meyerheinrich
noticed two Mourning Doves flying over the field west of the Grasspiper field.
Turns out, one was a White-winged Dove. Identified by Arie Gilbert. Also seen
by myself, Pat Aiken, Kurt Meyerheinrich and a few others (lifer for a few of
us here).

Happy Birding! Almost time for Oysters at Little Creek Oyster farm in

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove NO - Jones Beach (incl. photos from earlier)

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,
As of 11 AM, extensive searching had not produced the dove since the original
flyby at 8:45. It seemed to land near the beginning of the fisherman's road,
but shrubs blocked my view of its final descent. The spot I imagined was:
40.589385, -73.557984
Shorebirds and warblers around the Coast Guard Area were unremarkable save for
a Bay-breasted Warbler, singing very infrequently in shrubs just west of the
Coast Guard Station property itself. A Willow Flycatcher was at the turnaround.
Numbers were very low otherwise.
At Hempstead Lake SP this morning, a Black-billed Cuckoo continues, today heard
between the field 3 lot and MacDonald Pond to the east.

FW: [nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove - Dune Road, East Quogue (Suffolk)

2014-11-16 Thread David Klauber
An update on the dove. Derek saw it in the same location about 30 minutes after
posting. This was also east of the Beach Lane bridge. Shortly after Pat
Palladino saw it at the original location, then followed it as it flew about
1/4 mile west and also landed on a telephone wire. I believe this would have
been just east of the Beach Lane bridge.
Other birds of note were Orange-crowned Warbler in the scrub north of where an
orange house is being built, 3 Ipswich Sparrows, and American Bittern.

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove @ Cupsogue LI...

2014-06-10 Thread Andrew Baksh
Willie D'Anna who is visiting with 2 other upstate birders just called to
report a White-winged Dove at Cupsogue, LI.

The WWDO was observed about a 150 yards from the parking lot along the 4
wheel drive trail. Additional information suggest that It was seen near a
puddle next to the second "No Parking" sign along the right hand side of
the road.

Good luck if you and well done by Willie and crew. I was hoping they would
pull something out and they did.

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove, West End (Nassau)

2012-05-13 Thread Douglas Futuyma
At 2:30 this afternoon, a White-winged Dove flew past me as I walked
northward from Field 2 of Jones Beach-West End along the western exit road.
It was about 3 feet above ground, came past about 15-20 feet from me, and
continued eastward about 100 feet before disappearing from view around the
shrubs and pines that border the parking field. The white crescent across
the middle of each wing was conspicuous. I also noted the blunt tail with
white outer tips, and reddish brown tinge in the upper tail coverts and
tail feathers. I could not find the bird when I searched for it afterward,
but I cannot rule out the possibility that it flew into the pines and
stayed out of view.

Four Gull-billed Terns were among the terns on the sand bar near the
Coast-Guard station parking lot.

Re: [nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove @Jones Beach Coast Guard Station

2011-05-15 Thread Andrew Baksh
Thanks to Dave for posting the information on the White-winged Dove. I have
posted a photo on my blog for those of you interested in viewing.

Besides the shorebirds already mentioned by Shai Mitra, today's other
highlight was a Yellow-throated Warbler seen in Forest Park Queens with,
Rich Kelly, Al Lindberg, Mike Feder, Doug Futuyma and Peter Reisfeld.

Good Birding in Queens and Long Island!

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove Jones Beach Coast Guard Station

2011-05-15 Thread David Klauber

It looks like this hasn't been posted yet. Doug Futuyma and Andrew Baksh found
a White-winged Dove this afternoon at the Jones Beach West end Coast Guard
Station, at the eastern edge of the parking lot near a fire hydrant. From what
I was told the bird later walked away into the bushes but was relocated. It
fortunately was not too skittish, tolerating the crazy cat lady and some cars
that passed near it. It was there at least as late as 5 PM. Nice find guys
A 90 minute sea watch at Robt Moses Field 2 from 5-6:30 resulted in 4 or 5
Storm-Petrels, lots of gannets, and little else - no shearwaters or Jaegers

Joan Quinlan and Gerta Fritz found a White-winged Dove at the WE2 Marina (Jones
Beach) this morning about 10:00AM. The bird is in the company of Rock Pigeons
that congregate near the WE2 Marina restrooms. It was still being observed at
11:00AM.
