[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper & Buff-Breasted Sandpiper (Staten Island)

2017-08-26 Thread Jose Ramirez-Garofalo
At 1328 Anthony Ciancamino and I found an Upland Sandpiper and a
Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Miller Field in Staten Island.

We were alerted to the presence of the Upland Sandpiper by its flight call
while we were scanning feeding shorebirds. Twenty minutes later (and after
hearing it call multiple times) we were able to locate the Upland Sandpiper
in the grass next to the airplane hangar.

The buff-breasted sandpiper was in the same area, feeding along the large
puddle in front of the hangar.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper

2016-04-29 Thread Keith Cashman
Still being seen as of 3:05 PM.

One disturbing observation. A photographer stopped his dark blue SUV in the
left lane of westbound Ocean Parkway !!! Not only was this totally unnecessary
to get a great picture of the bird but was tremendously dangerous to himself
and unsuspecting motorists on the Parkway.

The NY State Police, Park Police, and the Suffolk County Police have been great
letting people stop on the right shoulders and enjoy watching the bird. If this
behavior continues it will generate calls and that will generate a police
response. That police response will be chasing people from the area and at
worst writing Parking tickets that most people will not appreciate.

Lets all respect not only the bird but also the vehicle and traffic laws so
that ALL people can have an opportunity to enjoy this bird, and driving along a
public roadway.

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper YES! Friday Update

2016-04-15 Thread Jane Ross
With thanks to everyone who helped me locate the Upland Sandpiper, I'm happy to
report it was clearly visible at 10 am in the open median just east of Oak
Beach and just west of a dirt road that crosses the median. Actually fairly
visible from either east or west bound Ocean parkway. Don't attempt to leave
your car! And use flashers for safety as lots of cars whizzing by!

RE:[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper Friday Update?

2016-04-15 Thread Joe Jannsen
Jane,

My suggestion is to travel eastbound on Ocean Parkway in the right hand lane.
Once you pass Oak Beach (old OBI location) slow down (I put my flashers on) and
scan the grassy median in the center of the road. The bird is pretty
conspicuous if there. Once you spot it, pull over to the right onto the grassy
shoulder and observe from your vehicle. As others have mentioned, the bird is
precariously close to fast-moving vehicles, so I wouldn’t approach any closer
and I definitely would not attempt to observe from the median. Across the road
provides close enough views that are safe for you and the bird.

Good luck!

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper...yes, plus some other nice birds !

2016-04-15 Thread robert adamo
I must be living right, to have waited this long before trying, and still
find this accommodating grassland-stalker ! With thanks to Joe Jannsen (a
man I haven't met) whose posting yesterday got me "up and moving" ! At 1130
today, the Uppie was exactly where he said, "just e/o Oak Beach near pole
#483 - viewed from the eastbound shoulder" ! I watched it walk & feed for ~
15 minutes, and I second John T's earlier apprehension, as it moved fairly
close to the s/s edge of the median, seemingly oblivious to the cars flying
by !

I then headed for Jones Beach, with stops at both the Cedar & Gilgo
marinas. At Cedar I had a Boat-tailed and a sighting I'll discuss further
on. The marsh island off of Gilgo Marina held a huge, resting flock of
Black-bellied Plovers, Sanderlings, Dunlins and who knows what else !

Arriving at the West End Coast Guard area, I found Sue & Ken Feustel, Bob
Proniewych, Gary Strauss and Ed Brecher, who were about to leave, but not
before telling me what they had just seen - thanks folks ! I then proceeded
to find: the single Black Scoter; 2 Red-throated Loons; 2 Common Loons
(all, but 1 common, were still in basic plumage, while that bird was
nearing it's full alternate colors); 2 A.Oystercatchers; 2, of the 7
Foster's Terns they had; a Field Sparrow and a Lesser Yellowlegs later on
in a marshy area on the back road n/o Parking Field 4 that leads to the
Wantagh Parkway. On my own, I found a late Dark-eyed Junco near the
C.G.Station and a singing Brown Thrasher in the median closer to the museum.

When I first stopped at Gilgo I thought I had 7 Common Terns, albeit, on
the early side, and so, after Ken had told me about the 7 Foster's they had
just seen, I told him of my Commons, which, when he, in turn, remarked
about the early date, I agreed, but told him I was fairly sure of the ID,
This played on my mind, to the extent of causing me to doubt how thorough I
had been earlier, ie, lighting, bill & primary colors, as well as my not
using a scope. I then went back to the Cedar Marina, only to find zero
terns. I then stopped back at the Gilgo Marina, and did find 15 terns, none
of them Common, all Foster's...of this I am sure ! I've decided to not
count the Common Terns, and wish to thank Ken for causing me to question if
I had been careful enough in making the claim that I did.

Cheers,
Bob 

RE: [nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper Continues

2016-04-14 Thread Joe Jannsen
I received the following message last night at 9:16 PM:

"Sorry, your message was not sent out to 'nysbirds-l' because the message is
identical to a message you sent to 'nysbirds-l' recently. If you believe you
are receiving this message in error, resend your message with slightly
different content."

An odd message, considering I rarely post to the listserve, and I most
definitely did not post an identical or another other message related to the
Upland Sandpiper. So, as suggested, I am reposting my report from yesterday
evening, in case folks did not receive it. Apologies if you are seeing this
information too late for it to be useful to you, but I did attempt to post my
observation in real time.

Thanks.

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper - YES

2016-04-10 Thread Brian Whipple
The Upland Sandpiper is still hanging out in median east of the Oak Beach
entrance, west of the turnaround.

It keeps crossing through the brambles in the median, so sometimes it's
visible on the eastbound side and sometimes visible on the westbound side.

There's no real room to park on the westbound side.

Good luck if you try.

Saw it also but the police made some of us move along. Not allowed to stop
unless its an emergency plus looks suspicous taking photos at the scene of
the gilgo beach murders. The nice state trooper that i chatted with asked
me to show him the bird and thought it was a good looking bird also

Re: [nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper

2016-04-05 Thread Phillip Magnussen
Good Day:
The upland sandpiper continues in the same spot as reported earlier by
Robert P. It is worth mentioning that this bird is very contently foraging
in the median and may indeed continue as folks get off work, etc.
This bird can potentially be enjoyed by many people as long as long as it
not flushed. The bird is very comfortable with cars, but as people exit
their cars or walk up on the grass, the bird either gets nervous and flies,
or runs to the other side of the median.
I would recommend staying in cars as much as possible.

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper, Croton Point

2012-04-13 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi All,

This morning I flushed an UPLAND SANDPIPER from the top of the capped
landfill at Croton Point Park. It flew around a couple times, giving its
awesome flight call, and settled down on the other side, where I
inadvertently flushed it again while trying to relocate it. It seemed to
again settle on the opposite (west) side of the landfill, so I think it is
probably still around, and probably will be at least for today, although it
may take some effort for anyone trying to find it.

Observations from yesterday in Rye included 27 BONAPARTE'S GULLS moving
northeast along the coast, 19 of which came by relatively high up in kettle
formation and then streamed off to the north. A RED-NECKED GREBE is also
still around at Read Sanctuary, offshore. Other birds included a number of
Northern Gannets, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, three swallow species (Barn, Tree,
N. rough-winged), and a pair of Common Goldeneyes.

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper still at RMSP

2010-04-06 Thread ROBERT ADAMO
This morning, between 9 & 9:30 AM, I saw the bird (at the same location) found
by Shai Mitra yesterday. Shortly afterward Gerta Fritz, and then Andrew Baksh,
arrived to get to see it also. Ken Fuestel however, had to work at little
harder to achieve the same success. A little before Ken arrived, the bird flew,
being spooked by one of the never ending passage of huge, sand carrying trucks,
the type used to transport giant boulders, or in mining operations. The sand, I
believe, in this operation, was being moved to help rectify the erosion caused
by recent storms. As Gerta and I headed for our cars, Ken & Andrew took off in
the direction of where the bird was headed, and did catch up with the uppie-
good hustle men! Cheers, Bob

The bird was on the roadside grass a little east of the exit ramp to Field 4,
or about a quarter mile west of the entrance to Field 5, around 9:00 am. Ken
Feustel and others looked for it without success later in the morning.
