Today, I observed the immature Red-headed Woodpecker that has taken up
residence in my yard and my neighbor’s yard since November 22nd.
Since I first saw it on the 22nd, it spends all its time caching food in the
various large oak trees on the properties. It never comes to any of the suet

A Gyrfalcon continues at Cedar Beach LI. The bird was teed up in a
Cedar tree out in the marsh and was pointed out by a couple of PA
birders.
Observed with Doug Futuyma and Bob Pronoviewych.

About an hour ago I found a PACIFIC LOON at the coast guard station.
Disappeared heading west in current. Many currently searching for it now.

Drake King Eider patrolling along Fort Tilden shore today. It was moving
eastwards with a small flock of mergansers, heading towards Riis, when we saw

I think the large group of Audubon/Linnaean/Littoral New Year's Day walkers
must have seen it as well.

remedy that situation fairly quickly!

A female King Eider was far offshore from Stehli Beach (the westernmost beach
on the Bayville strip). I was standing just beyond the little pavillion about
halfway down the parking lot and looking due north. It was associating with a
long line of White-winged Scoter

A drive along the North Fork this New Year's Day produced the following:
On Hulse Landing Rd. the first farm road east, just south of Sound Ave,
a good sized flock of Sparrows, mostly White-crowned with some Amer.
Tree Sparrows Song Sparrows.
A lone Turkey Vulture- Sound Ave just
Late this morning I went to Jones Beach WE2. Found the Northern Shrike on
a tree directly south of the parking lot (just west of the large swath of
un-vegetated beach) without even trying. After I took one photo it was gone.
A few large flocks of Snowy Bunting were moving about the beach - and a
Had a good start to a New Year of birding with several nice sightings in
Brooklyn.
At Coney Island a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and first year GLAUCOUS GULL
continue on the Coney Island Creek side of the peninsula. In addition, there
was a RED-NECKED GREBE feeding in the rip off of Norton Point.
I stopped at Sea Cliff about 1PM today to check for the previously reported
Black Guillemot at the intersection of Cliffway and the Blvd. I did not see the
Guillemot but instead a large grebe caught my eye. In my bins in back light I
was thinking it was a Red-necked Grebe. When I got my scope
The 2013 season at the Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch came to a quiet end today,
with no raptors recorded on light to moderate westerly winds. This marked
the 25th consecutive year of counting at the site.
The season began on August 20, and in between, 674 hours of coverage were
put in on 111 days by
