[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Woodcock, Whip-poor-wills, and more

2024-05-15 Thread Andrew Block
While herping this evening the woodcock was back at his usual courting place
next to the upper parking lot at the visitor center.  He made some sounds I had
not heard them make before.  A very accomidating bird.  Also had a first for me
there, at least three Whip-poor-wills calling just after dark.  Didn't know
they were nesting there.  Suppose they might have been passing through, but
they seemed to be on territory.  Nice.  Also had two species of a family of
birds we're not allowed ot mention here.  Contact me if you anyone wants to
know what they were;-)

There are one or two Brewster’s warblers in Ironwood (Sterling Forest) during
the past two weeks. The number of Golden-winged warblers have been low but they
will show up in the next week or so.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest, Thursday. Ironwood Road

2020-05-14 Thread Robert Lewis
I and at least eight other birders tried for the Brewster's and Golden-winged
Warbler along the power line trail at Ironwood Road.  We took the trail north
of the parking lot.  I don't know if anyone went south.

Park here:  41.234766, -74.237734.

To get to the trail going north you have to walk out the south end of the
parking lot, then loop around to the west and north.  Cross the stream.  When
you leave the woods and head north you will cross over two small hills.  The
first one is quite steep, the second not.  Start looking after the second hill
and before you get to the third hill, which is really tall.  I've been told you
can keep on going past that.

I encountered the Brewster's between the second and third hills.  However, I
didn't get a very satisfying look and no good photo.  This was around 8:00 or
8:30.  Another birder and I saw the Golden-winged in about the same spot thirty
minutes later.

Both birds were elusive and frustrating.  I don't think anyone saw either bird
after that.  I left about 10:30 and don't know what happened after that.

 Prairie Warblers are abundant.

There was one golden-wing at the base of the hill, heading north on the power
line trail at the end of Ironwood Dr. Further north, up the hill was a
Brewster's warbler singing his little heart out. In fact, I saw more Brewster's
warblers yesterday than I did golden-wings, one on the power line trail and one
on the rifle range trail on the east side of Long Meadow Rd. And what's really
amazing is that I'm fairly certain those are the exact same Brewster's I saw,
in those exact same spots, singing the same unusual songs,  the last time I was
there, 2 YEARS AGO!

The other thing that struck me was that the golden-wings are going to be in
trouble there and for once the culprits aren't humans. It's the beavers.
They've dammed up the stream that runs through the swamp at the bottom of the
hill on the east side of the power line trail (as you head north), creating an
enormous pond and inundating a large tract of golden-wing nesting habitat.
Beaver ponds that drowned warbler habitat at the rifle range and Blue Lake have
been recently drained and the tussock sedge that the warblers nest in has
regrown, but the beavers cut down so many trees and drowned so many others. The
golden-wings (in Sterling Forest at least) like their nests to be in swamp
forest not open swamp so I don't know if they are going to be able to move back
in. It's hard times for everyone these days.

In the tug hill region while it is not legal to ride ROWs Enforcement is
lacking Usually owners of land retain all other rights other than those they
cede to the power company. If so they can prohibit trespass if they wish but
few do.!Based on my experience most ATV and snowmobile operators feel it is
their “right” to ride on what they perceive as public land. Even when wrong
these tread heads tend to be very aggressive about their so called rights. They

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Sunday

2018-05-13 Thread CobyNomi Klein
While everyone else was in Central Park, the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon
Society was in Sterling Forest this morning. Ok, it was just me since no
one signed up for the trip. Officially, I had 71 species plus an
unidentified accipiter and a Brewster's warbler. There were 18 species of
warblers including a yellow-throated warbler just south of the circle at
the end of Ironwood Dr. where there were two golden-wings singing in the
morning and another was up the hill to the north along with the Brewster's.
Other sightings included 4 species of vireos, 4 species of thrushes, 5
sparrow species, and a small flock of turkeys.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest, Ironwood Drive powerline

2015-05-12 Thread Felipe Pimentel
This is the second year that this happens in Sterling Forest. Last year, they
did replace the cables in the powerline towers from Ringwood (NJ) to Warwick
(NY) and it was done in late spring, early summer during the nesting season.
This year they have been working in the same areas (cleaning the dirt roads for
the jeeps and maintenance vehicles). I was there yesterday and they were doing
the same thing that Dawn has described. I was told that they would be working
in the area for the rest of the week.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest, Ironwood Drive powerline

2015-05-12 Thread redknot
Perhaps the local Audubon Chapter or some other constituency could contact the
power company and explore the possibility of refraining from
disturbing/destroying essential habitat during the spring nesting season. From
our experience on Long Island the power company, in a couple of cases, has been
amenable to postponing vegetation management and control efforts during the
nesting season, once they understood the potential impacts and realized they
could undertake the management actions during a significant fraction of the
year, outside the nesting season window.

see that crews with chainsaws were hard at work along the north
right-of-way, usually the more productive direction for Golden-winged
Warblers. I understand that the right-of-way needs to be maintained, but
the timing seems less than ideal for the warblers.
Since the noise was disruptive, we walked south, and saw only one
Blue-winged and 2 Golden-winged Warblers. We did see Prairie, Indigo
Bunting, Field and Chipping Sparrows, Great-crested Flycatcher and
Yellow-throated Vireos, and a pair of Broad-winged Hawks along the power
line.
We then turned southwest to follow the Sterling Valley trail to the lake.
The birding was tough and bugs abundant, but we saw Worm-eating, Cerulean,
Black-and-white, Ovenbird, Black-throated Green and Yellow Warblers, and an
abundance of Scarlet Tanagers. Wood Ducks were on the pond, and there was a
pair of Kingbirds at the lake.
I won't list all the birds here, but we concluded with an Eagle flying
over. Bald is the expected species. but the bird was completely silhouetted
and any markings were obscured. It definitely had no white at all on the
head and tail, but it was impossible to see the mottling, if any, on the
body.
Still, an exciting conclusion to a good day!

2014-05-26 Thread Arie Gilbert
A Queens County Bird Club Trip had most if not all expected/hoped for
species on it's trip there yesterday.

Two notes:
Powerline construction continues, but the trail at the terminus of
Ironwood road to the right remained open and productive.

Tick numbers yesterday were low; not absurdly high like last year. phew.

highlights include:
Broad-winged Hawk
Olive-sided Flycatcher
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Yellow-throated Vireo
Golden-winged Warbler
Cerulean Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Hooded Warbler

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Birding class (BBG) just complete its spring
birding series with a very successful trip to Sterling Forest in Orange
County. We recorded some 30 species with excellent views of Cerulean Warbler,
Black-billed Cuckoo, Hooded Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, and Indigo Bunting. We
also had so-so views of Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Golden-winged Warbler.
These birds were all found on Ironwood Drive.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest warblers

2013-05-07 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,
A first of season walk this morning along the power line cut at the end of
Ironwood Road paid off handsomely. We (John DiGennaro, Brian Padden, Kim
and Maibritt Duus, and myself) found our target birds: Cerulean Warbler,
Golden-winged Warbler (2-3), Hooded Warbler (several singing along the road
coming in) and Blue-winged Warblers.

In addition we saw at least a couple of dozens of Prairie Warblers. Also a
Scarlett Tanager was seen, but not by all of us. Overhead passed by 3
Broad-winged Hawks, one Bald Eagle, several Turkey Vultures and a single
Black Vulture.

It was a treat to see multiples of warblers after the dearth of songbirds
we have suffered in the city.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Mississippi Kites YES

2012-06-28 Thread Arie Gilbert
I went to Sterling Forest today with Bob Hayes and Gary Strauss. On site
were Steve Sachs and "the biggest birder in NJ", who had one of the
birds in sight.

Thankfully, as opposed to some negative reports of late, we got to see
the birds right away.

for those still wanting to go, I would go earlier rather than later as
they seem to take off mid morning to hunt?

from the "i've never seen that dept" One of the birds was observed
perched, when it began throwing its head back and proceeded to
regurgitate the presumed remains of the dragonflies it had consumed.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Mississippi Kites and Ironwood Dr.

2012-06-14 Thread Alan Wells
Finally with some clear blue skies (6/14/2012), I decided to try for a few
more photos of the Sterling Forest Mississippi Kites. On my previous visit
the pair had been extremely cooperative, perching and interacting for
prolonged periods on the bare trees across the street from the Hudson
Environmental Research Institute (HEnRI) building. This time was very
different. From about 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM, the pair continuously brought
sticks into the presumptive nest tree. Both birds would quickly disappear
into the dense foliage. Flights in and out of the nest tree were usually
quick and low, generally obscured by greenery. At no time were they seen on
their usual bare perches, so photographic opportunities were limited. The
kites were frequently harassed by Blue Jays until finally, both kites took
off in hot pursuit after a jay and drove it off.

Several friends and acquaintances from the HEnRI location and I then stopped
by Ironwood Drive where we were rewarded with: Green Heron, Indigo Bunting,
Cerulean Warbler, American Redstart, Golden-winged Warbler, Common
Yellowthroat, Common Raven, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Eastern Phoebe, Prairie
Warbler, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-tailed Hawk, Great Blue Heron, and lots
of ticks! A previously reported Yellow-breasted Chat was not found.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Mississippi Kites - Yes!

2012-05-29 Thread Corey Finger
Both Mississippi Kites were present this morning at the Sterling Forest
Visitor's Center from when I arrived at 7:05 AM until I left at about 8:30 AM.
There were quite a few birders around enjoying the show, which included
snagging insects (seemed like dragonflies), carrying sticks, and just being
kites. Great birds!

Also of note at the same spot was a singing Cerulean Warbler.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest+

2012-05-05 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi All,

Took a trip up to Sterling Forest/Harriman today. A beautiful (if a bit
foggy at first) day to be out there. 90 species on the day.

I had 23 warbler species (with at least two more reported from Sterling
this morning to the Mearnsbirdclub list), including at least 11 CERULEAN, 5
GOLDEN-WINGED, 10 WORM-EATING (an underestimate for sure, but I didn't
count individuals), 14 HOODED, 4 BLACKBURNIAN, 3 BLACKPOLL, 1 CANADA, 7
PRAIRIE, 2 NASHVILLE, etc..

A pleasant surprise was a singing WINTER WREN about 0.5 miles SW of the
Ironwood powerline cut in a mixed hemlock-deciduous ravine (take the trail
from the apartments at the end of Ironwood Dr that goes up and over the cut
and into the woods). When I got to the powerline cut at about 7 AM, two
BARRED OWLS were calling to the west. Also a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO along Old
Forge Rd.

I stopped at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers on the way back to check in on
the continuing GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, which has gotten considerably
tamer since it appeared several months ago. There were some migrants
around, including 1-2 BLACKPOLLS.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest, Rockefeller Park

2011-06-12 Thread eyeflight16
The Connecticut Young Birders Club took a trip to New York today, specifically
to Sterling Forest and Rockefeller State Park. Highlights at Sterling Forest
included 5 Golden-winged Warblers, 2 Cerulean Warblers, many Prairie,
Black-and-white, Yellow, and Chestnut-sided Warblers, some Scarlet Tanagers, a
few Turkey and Black Vultures, as well as an Eastern Towhee. At Rockefeller
State Park we found one of the Kentucky Warblers in the same place as
previously reported on the Ash Tree Loop by the intersection of the Overlook
Trail right where the trail starts to go downhill.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest 5-29-11

2011-05-31 Thread Arie Gilbert
The Queens County Bird Club Inc. had it's trip to Sterling Forest This
past Sunday. Though overcast, the birds put in an excellent showing.
Highlights include numerous Hooded, Cerulean, Prairie, Chestnut-sided,
and exceedingly cooperative Golden-winged Warblers.

Of special note: There has been some discussion about a recent
"incident" between a birder and a Black Bear. We did inquire with a
park ranger and apparently the circumstance as he described it was that
the birder unwittingly got between the bear and its cubs; otherwise he
stated that the bears are not aggressive and an 'unfortunate event'
unlikely.

N.B. Avoid this circumstance with wildlife: even a raccoon separated
from its kits can become "protective"

Thanks to Andrew Baksh for alerting us in advance.

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest

2010-06-06 Thread eyeflight16
I had a great time at Sterling Forest today. Although the weather was very
threatening, at the Ironwood Drive powerline cut I still managed to see many
Prairie Warblers and 3 Golden-winged Warblers. This is a bird I have been
trying to see for 3 years, and I am so happy that I finally was able to get
here to see them. Although they were pretty elusive, I got spectacular looks at
an adult male singing out in the open. Something that I noticed was how I never
heard or saw Blue-winged Warblers. I guess that's why the golden-winged are
here.
