Re: [obc] Break up the Week Ride
Hi Greg, I asked Manny this very question a while ago, and was told they keep going right until the snow makes it impossible. They meet at the Gamelin [?spelling] parking lot, that's right at the entrance to the Gatineau Parkway where the rock crates are. There's now an information kiosk there with water fountain, to the right of the entrance. I'd like to go, but am hedging my bets because of a cold. Otherwise I'd be there. It's a great time, with some meeting at the Tim Hortons for a coffee afterwards. At that time in the day, there's little to no traffic, so you pretty much have the parkway to yourselves. It's a social ride, with everyone meeting at points along the way to allow others to catch up. Have a great time, Bill [Sniff, sniff ... cough, cough, ... wish I was going ... ] At 2:50 PM -0400 8/10/2002, Greg Franks wrote: I know this is on Wednesdays, but Is is still going, and if so when and where? ..greg - For list help, please send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (613) 230-1064 Website: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - For list help, please send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (613) 230-1064 Website: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^
Re: [obc] How do I carry?
At 12:45 AM -0400 21/9/2002, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I carry a viola (case is about 33 x 8 x 6) on bicycle. I have done this in two different ways: 1. Take a backpack frame and remove the backpack (the straps are still attached to the frame). Then bungie-cord the instrument to the frame, put your arms through the straps and get on your bike. (This may be awkward impossible if your son is too small relative to his instrument). 2. Get large panniers which don't taper at the bottom. The ones which are ideal for my viola are called Pike Sport. I got mine many years ago at Rebec and Kroes (I'm fearing that the winter salt will have them finished off in a few more years). What makes them really great is that there is a zipper all the way down the side of the pannier (so it's easy to get the case in, and a small strap with those plastic fast-click buckles at the top of the zipper to really secure the instrument. About 60-70% of my viola is still out of the pack, but it's secure in there. If there was still concern about losing it, one could put a bungie cord shrough the handle of the case and around the seat post. If neither of these solutions work, somebody told me once of a man - I think in Westboro - who makes custom packs. I could probably track him down for you if you want to go this route. The friend who told me about him said that his price for work was quite reasonable. Celia, that's pretty interesting, what you've managed to carry on your bike. How are you with kitchen sinks? ... ;-) Actually, it just occurred to me, the custom pack builder could be the long-time standing, Westboro Shoe Rebuilder, here on Richmond Road. The shop's under different management now, but I understand the same service and innovation is still accessible. Another option it to check with Trail Head, and see if they can put you in touch with whoever repairs their tents used on their Black Feather trips. I seem to remember Peter Brebner being the person they used for tent repairs. Like the Westboro Shoe Rebuilder, I understood Peter Brebner to have the tools and skill to work with heavy fabrics such as those used in tents and packs. However, that was some 10 + years ago. Alternatively, check with outdoor stores and see what they've to offer. All the best with it. Bill Hope this helps, Celia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Actually not I, but my son. [obc] RAAM - Update on fellow club member Michael Lau!
Hello RAAM racing fans! Like many of you, I too have been following the progress of RAAM since it started this past Sunday. As mentioned previously by others on this mail-list, club member Michael Lau is one of 15 remaining competitors in the Men's Solo division of this mighty epic test of cycling ability. I have to confess that I'm very excited and thrilled to observe the results of this race as they unfold and are displayed on the web site - and primarily so because a fellow club member, Michael Lau, is one of the racers! I've just heard back from Steve Born, who has just returned from visiting the racers on the course, and thought I'd share with you his observations. So, without further delay, here are Steve's answers to my initial questions I asked him about Michael's success to date: snip I have ridden with Michael on various tours before and he's always impressed me with his strength. I have no doubt that he will finish the race and that his progress is going well at this time. I did see him on the course a couple times and cheered for him as he rode past. I did notice that he had a brace or bandage on one of his knees but I couldn't see any unusual changes from his normal, smooth pedal stroke. Michael always acknowledged my presence there, which made me believe he was quite awake and alert. The last time I saw him was en route to Ogden. Currently he is in a group (I use the term group somewhat loosely) of riders including Patten, Koning, Moonen, and Beal... he's in good company and holding his own. I think he, as all the riders will, enjoy getting out of all that climbing, it really takes a toll. Michael's tough... I predict he will finish. Personally, I think Kish will catch Fasching by the end of Arkansas, if not before. Fasching's pace at the start was off the charts but now, with the big climbs behind, he's in Kish country. I'm estimating that Kish is about 100 miles behind Fasching at this time, which is remarkable considering all the climbing in the first third of the race... Fasching trained in the Alps while Kish trained in Florida - big difference! snip Steve So there you have it! Michael's doing well, and certainly has earned the deepest regard and admiration from this OBC member! ... wow, and to think I actually thought of myself as a cyclist. ;-) A big round of 'Cheers!' for Michael from me, and hopefully you too. All together now! ... Re: [obc] RLCT Looking for a pack to lead
Hi Roger, So, how was your weekend down in Kingston? What was the rest of the ride like for you and Phil after Merrickville? True to plan, I made it on to Smith Falls, 20 kms, and Perth another 20 kms. You were certainly correct, the wind was a real 'delite'; not only going into it to get to Perth, but also a considerable ways back on the classic route from Perth to Ottawa. It wasn't until the route straightened out 10 kms before Blacks' Corners, that the wind was in my favour. By the time I got home, 7:45 pm, I'd completed 208.5 kms. I don't remember a previous ride where I ate so much. All in all, a great day, and thanks for the ride to Merrickville. [obc] Thanks
Hi Sally, Many thanks for this info. After yesterday's windy Winchester ride, I'm not so sure I'd be able to keep up the speed demons of the Barrhaven Express. However, hopefully I'll be able to find a slightly slower group to ride with when exploring a ride with them next Saturday. Just a quick note of thanks to Tom Stratton, George, David, Barry, Jackie, Helene, and Pauline for a great ride yesterday. Really enjoyed your company, and Helene and Pauline if you're on this list, great seeing you again, even after a two year absence! Despite the wind and the cool temperatures, I really can't think of a better way to spend a day then on a bike. Of course, the Subway sandwich was a great force in making for such a terrific ride. Tom, sorry for fading on you once back at Billings. That coffee made for one of those odd experiences when it actually made me sleepy, instead of the usual pick-me-up. I think this ride had been getting aound 25 people but due to the runing events this weekend alot of regulars did not show up. About half the group turned aound at the 30K point to get in a total of 60K, the rest uf us continued on to Merickville and back for the full 120K. Good roads with not much traffic, I'll be doing it again. Hope the weather holds out I want to do OBC tomorow. [obc] Reliability Ride Inspiration: Fasching sets 24 hour road recordwith 856
Hi, For everyone taking part in tomorrows' Reliability Ride, here's something you might find inspiring. Cheers to all, Bill Wolfgang Fasching has set a new 24 hour (non-drafting) record on the road with 856 km. The UMCA ( RTTC) record of Andy Wilkinson is 844 km set in 1997. This record remains unchanged since Fasching's record was not set according to UMCA rules. Right now it is not yet clear whether another recognizing organization was involved in this record attempt. Below is a translation of an article from the Austrian Kleine Zeitung newspaper found at http://www.kleine-zeitung.at Wolfgang Fasching suffered, however he surpassed the old 24-hour world record by twelve kilometers. Parktherme Bad Radkersburg, 2 May, 15.45 h Also those visitors of the Parktherme who do not know much about sport are feeling the tension in the air. The reason for this tension is Wolfgang Fasching's latest project. He wants to ride his bike in 24 hours further than any other human being before. The technical notion for this is: 24-hour world record attempt with the road bike. Still ten minutes up to the start. Professionally Wolfgang Fasching takes care for a last photo session: I will give my best and we will see what happens. If I'm not successful, I'm not going to be extremely disappointed. But it is undeniable: He is eager to take on this challenge and can hardly expect the start. To be not successful seems to be an option he does not consider seriously. Halbenrain, 2 May, 21.00 h. The sun is away, it becomes cool, about 100 fans are waiting in a tent next to the course for Wolfgang Fasching, who passes all 17 to 18 minutes. He seems to ride like a clockwork. Behind the scene however, there is a lot of activity going on in his support crew. Wolfgang started somewhat too fast, he had back pain and a first light crisis, explains Christian Fink. Fink and Marco Gottaris, both physicians at the University of Innsbruck, supervise the state of health of the ultra cyclist. And they help, if necessary. In this case with heat packings, which were put into Wolfgang's back pockets. Sleep is not an option in this night. Neither for Fasching, nor for his support crew. Halbenrain, 3 May, 1.00 h. It is chilly, pitch-dark and calm. The music band in the tent has already stopped to play and with the exception of the responsible persons nobody is around anymore. The hardest part of the challenge begins. The time until the sun comes up again seems like eternity. But Fasching is not alone. His wife and the support crew is around and above all his thoughts. And they say: keep on going. Halbenrain, 3 May, 13.00 h Fasching is still within his schedule, but he becomes slower. Franz Stocher, one of the best Austrian cyclists on the track and double bronze medal winner at the world championships and Arnold Eisel, professional cyclist from Styria, are riding behind him. They cheer him up, scream at him. Rude words are used. But it helps. Fasching gets out of his crisis. He struggles through. Parktherme, 3 May, 16.00 h. The tension is over, Wolfgang Fasching did it. In numbers: 856 kilometers in 24 hours. He surpassed the old world record by 12 kilometers. -- RIDE TO SURVIVE: http://www.ridetosurvive.org Ride To Survive can be contacted the following ways: By Mail: 358 Richmond Road, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K2A 0E8 By FAX: 1 (613) 798-7746 By Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - For list help, please send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (613) 230-1064 Web/mailing list: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb/Newsletter - ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^

Hi Les! Many, many thanks for this suggestion. As I'm still feeling my way around this undertaking, this is one idea I haven't considered, and don't even know if it ever would occur to me. For anyone interested, more details of Boomer's adventure can be found at the URL appearing at the bottom of this message. I'm contacting as many cycling clubs and organizations along Paul's planned route in an effort to bring greater pubic exposure to his undertaking. RE: [obc] Aching neck
Sally, too true! Though either way, it's far better than having THREE Rauls on the handlebar; which would make handling the bike very tricky ... the added weight ... LOL! Seems to me that it's certainly an issue of reach to the handlebar, and, the need to limit your elbows being locked out. Remember, you need some flex and articulation in your elbows to retain a relaxed riding posture, thereby absorbing road shock transmitted through the front wheel and fork. Once I can get my elbows more relaxed, I find my shoulders drop to a more relaxed position; with the added benefit of more even and relaxed breathing. [and yes, I like this word 'relaxed'] The other thing I've found really helps to stay off an aching neck is to put on additional roles of cork handlebar tape. I know it can be relatively expensive, but the Profile brand tape is great, because it's thick. With two or three roles on the bar, and a good pair of cycling gloves with gel padding, I've found neck pain to be a thing of the past. In order to retain a uniform feeling on the bar, I found strips of cork tape placed longitudinally along the main riding points of the bar [the outer side of the first bend in the bar when viewed from the stem out] under the outer most role, to work wonderfully. In other words, place even old strips of cork tape that would otherwise be headed for the garbage, longitudinally on top of your present cork tape that aligns with your favoured riding points along the bar, and on top of this tape, place your outer most role of additional cork tape. Using this method, I think I've actually been able to get on a good four roles of tape; over the years. ;-) Works for me, and like the tape on the bar; I'm sticking to it!
