Having 2 Solaris partitions is not supported and never has been - it may work,
but it really is not intended to be used like that - the slice naming does not
support it, as we have no way to present the MBR partition name in device name.
(Of course the whole disk device naming sucks, but thats another topic at all).

One issue is also the processor, Intel Atom Diamondville is a poorly
performing architecture: in-order, little L2, poor FPU. Only Atom Avoton is
decent.
I bought a similarly spec'd D525-based Supermicro motherboard a few years
ago after reading positive reviews and it was a big disappointment.

2017-11-12 Thread Reginald Beardsley via oi-dev
After *much* fun I got Hipster 2017.10 to install on my Giada N3.  Firefox is
marginally functional, very marginally  functional. It consumes roughly 1/2 of
the 2 GB main memory.

The first set of  output is from the first session when I was asked about
telemetry.  The 2nd seems to relate to "getting into yahoo mail and trying to
send a message." The part in quotes above  was all typed without echo.

Typing more than a few words is very problematic.

The release notes asserted that one could install versions of OI in parallel.
Having successfully installed 151_a8 in the first 1/2 of the disk I tried
installing Hipster in the 2nd half.  This was *not* good for 1515_a8..  The
install seemed to go normally, but when I tried to log in, 2017.10  would not
accept my password.  I moved the drive over to another 2017.10 instance on a
z400 and cleared the passwords from /etc/shadow.  After that the 2017.10
instance would not boot.

I had intended to use the 2nd half of the disk to mirror the first half as
protection against media failures.  However, ti appears that it is not possible
access the 2nd MSDOS partition.  I used the text installer for all installs.
The typing latency is running to over a minute at times.

The text installer would *not* allow me to have two Solaris partitions.

Having discovered that the latency is because 2 GB is not enough memory, I'm
not sure any of this matters.

Could it be that your DVD drive is failing as well? Or simply your
motherboard controller?

The reference documentation:

http://docs.openindiana.org/handbook/getting-started/

states that the password is 'openindiana' (and likely has been for some
time). To make sure I just verified that it works as expected.

Not sure what you mean by "alternative". How about the Text Installer?

The desktop has two icons:
- Install OpenIndiana
- Install OpenIndiana using text installer

This is usually enough as soon as the system is able to boot up, which is
allegedly not your case.

Sorry that your experience is not smooth, but it may vary depending on your
hardware.
I have 4 machines and 2 virtualbox instances running OI and encounter
issues very seldom (or none that can't be fixed with a bit a effort)

Kind regards

Re: [oi-dev] OI Hipster 2017.10 snapshot

2017-11-11 Thread Reginald Beardsley via oi-dev
I must dispute the assertion that Hipster 2017.10 is ready.

I have a failing hard drive on my Internet access system running oi151_a8. I
have installed a new hard drive, partitioned it with gparted and booted the DVD
image. I have been running OI on this box since 148.

1) at the live desktop I cannot run either installer nor can I open a terminal
window. All I get is a nice popup "i/o error" dialog.

2) when I try to boot from the DVD in single user mode it demands a user name
and password, but does not accept "jack/jack" or "root/root". If you need to
come up in single user mode from a DVD this is *really* annoying. There is no
security if you have physical control of the machine playing games with the
person booting from the DVD is pointless.

3) I can find NO alternative ISOs!

4) The DVD boot menu does not have an install option. WTF?

This *used* to be SunOS where things worked properly and you were not forced
into using the very latest version if you didn't want it.

I fully appreciate that there is only a small group doing most of the work.
But this is almost enough to make me give up and just run Windows for my
Internet access.
