It never hurts to diversify your skills. As everyone on this list will
tell you MySQL is no where near on equal footing with Oracle. However,
it is used in A LOT of small shops in the Linux/Apache/PHP/MySQL
combination. Keeping your options open and current is always a good
idea.

AFAIK you can't quickly drop a datafile. What we have done in this situation is to resize the datafile to 1 byte or however small you can make it. That way oracle can never write an extent there. Then do the export/drop tablespace/import routine at your next maintenance.

That depends on how much system level work the DBA has to do. If the SA's are good and understand Oracle RDBMS system requirements then no the DBA can do without root. They do need access to the Oracle related file systems, /tmp, and the application filesystems.

this would give you the decimal equivalent of the hours and minutes added to your date field for a time stamp type output. This assumes that your date field is a date datatype and that all entries are for date 00:00 and not just a sysdate input.
