In Columbia, MO, we usually have two people (usually organizers) greet
people at the door and take money, invite newcomers to join our mailing
list, hand out second-dance-free cards, count the money, pay musicians,
caller, and sound man, put out flyers. Old-timers ask newbies how they
heard about
I was hoping Lisa would chime in. I would only add:
At the weekly Monday Dance in Nelson our open fiddle case is in the hall by the
door and the fee is only $3. Generally a smallish crowd. And we collect the
cash earlyish in the evening.

Correction: At Rochester's Sunday English dance, there is one volunteer who
sits at the door for the first half of the dance to take the gate, answer
questions, etc. He also give out "next dance free" passes to first time
dancers. In return, he gets free admission to the dance, and is able to

At Peterborough NH, it's mostly volunteers, occasionally an organizer
fills in. We're lucky that these days
For out Meet Me in St Louis weekend flyer this year - I formatted it as a full
page - 2 sides - but folded in half to make a smaller 4 page booklet. Takes
less space and divides up the info more so it is not as cluttered

Doing our part to stem the tide of paper, we have eliminated our own monthly
dance's paper flyer. (We stopped making one, although not really to stem paper
tide... did it purely to save our promo team time, as it seemed like hardly
anyone was taking the flyers at dances.)
We do have business
In Rochester NY, at our weekly Thursday Contra and Sunday English dances,
we use the honor system. The cashbox is at the door inside the hall, where
everyone can see who is at it.
They are small-ish dances, about 50-60 people on average, and mostly regulars.

prominently listed on any flyers
2) Our flyer table is getting very, very busy...can people consider
