RE: 1.5.3 is out, but what is so new?

2001-10-17 Thread Aaron Tavistock

True it has been 4 months without much noticable changes, but as I
understand it there are a lot of under the cover changes. More importantly
consider that Ironflare is based out of Sweden -- the last four months have
been summer (e.g. it will be getting cold again very soon and people will be
indoors more) and its common in Europe to take a month holiday during the
summer (so you might say its only been three months :) wish I got a month of
vacation).

I'd expect a lot of really great improvements over the forthcoming months.

These are really MINOR changes for 4 months of development. I have reported
a pretty serious bug (#599) with stack traces, and instructions on how to
duplicate, and that's not fixed. For all this time, these changes seem
superficial.

Hello, Magnus,

As regards 1.5.2 is there any restriction on the return types of the EJB
method. More specifically, I failed to return Set (as Map.keySet )
and Iterator (as Map.keySet.iterator() ) types but succeeded with Map. (I
think serialization is the point )

Sincerely your,

Hi all.
1.5.3 is *not* officially out yet, but will be very soon.
As we previously said in our weekly mail, the 1.5.3 release will not
hold
that many new features. We have spent a lot of time and energy on
changing
Orion core in order to be able to move forward more quickly. After
1.5.3 is
*officially* released, we will get back to frequent releases.
Local interfaces will most likely be in the release after 1.5.3.

Orion and EJB2.0 (EJB QL)

2001-10-17 Thread Stefan Marx

Hi,

currently I have to decide wich way to go with a new EJB Project.

We need some App-Server independance so we have to decide if we should use
CMP with the EJB2.0 Relationships and QL or BMP with our own SQL-Statements.

Is there any information available when Orion will support EJB2.0 and EJB QL
(Query language)? I can also use a Beta Release for the next 3 Months so I'm
not sticked on official Releases.

Regards Stefan

RE: Orion and EJB2.0 (EJB QL)

2001-10-17 Thread Curt Smith

Is there any information available when Orion will support EJB2.0
 and EJB QL

My thoughts on CMP vs BMP:
On my project I went with BMP + DAO patterns + business deligates
at the client tier that deligate reads to the much more efficient
DAO's (direct access to the DB) and updates to transactional
components (entities mediated by session beans).

With CMP you don't have the higher performance choice at the
client business deligate level to go directly to the DB via
DAO's, all reads have to go through the transactional tier
(for no good reason except to boost the stock of your appserver
and hardware vendors).

My personal opinion about CMP, that I'd like to hear other's
experience on is that you'll spend almost as much time developing and
debugging QL as you would DAO+SQL. You'll loose the much higher
performance direct access to the DB for read operations. Given
that most web site pages are doing read, (display of catalogue
pages) use of CMP for reads through entities makes no sense unless
a slow web site is desired.

Any thoughts?

thanks, curt

I think (though I may be mistaken) that they had to do a bit of re-write in
anticipation of moving
forward with the spec and in addition to that re-write they also took care of some
bugs. The
suggestion was that future releases would be a little more frequent. Hopefully so!

Re: Nimda Virus

2001-10-17 Thread Robert S. Sfeir

We've had tries from the Nimda virus trying to exploit, but there is
nothing in Orion which would allow it to. It was trying to call some
EXE files, and the virus is stupid enough to not realize that the server
is trying to serve up those files and that they don't exist, and that it
should just move on with its life.

For anyone seeking to stump those worms, here is an article about an
Open Source piece of software that will trap worms and keep them busy,
while you clean things up and save your servers from disaters.

Hope this helps.

A reliable little bird told me that Orion plans support for

This sounds like no Servlet 2.3 or JSP 1.2. (Just speculation

MDB in orion 1.5.2 using Queue

2001-10-17 Thread Romen Law

ello,

I tested MDB using topic and it worked fine. What I did was to deploy the
MDB using the 'jms/theTopic' as the destination-location in
orion-ejb-jar.xml. Then I ran the sample jmschat.jar and saw that my MDB got
called.

But I could not repeat the same using Queue as the destination. I deployed
the same MDB using destination-typejavax.jms.Queue/destination-type in
ejb-jar.xml and destination-location=jms/theQueue in orion-ejb-jar.xml.
Then I ran the coffeemaker.jar sample using the -order flag. My bean did not
get called. Did I do something wrong?

Has anyone tried using MDB with Queue? Any clues?

cheers
romen
