If I understand what you want, it is actually pleasantly simple. Try this:-
At bottom left of the screen, touch the "hamburger menu". (Three
horizontal bars).
In there, select "My Places".
In there, select My Favourites (if it hasn't already appeared)

know all the regions/names of each country, they can change from time to

IMHE -OsmAnd works well (normally) on Motorola x Force. Route calc is
sometimes a bit slow. Battery is good.
To conserve power:-
Turn off all unwanted apps, bluetooth, etc.
Reduce screen brightness if practicable.
Rely mainly on voice directions.
Use "Automatic screen on/off".
Carry a solar

Sorry to disagree with you. It does not really matter what you try to do
with the underlay. It *IS* standard functionality of OsmAnd. Switch the
view to cycle mode and switch on cycle routes. Then they should show up.
