I have to say that while I did not expect to feel
confident in having my son sleeping in my bed with me, I managed to do so on
many occasions without rolling over on top of him as I feared.
I received a SIDS information booklet from a friend
and remember reading the same information

It aint necessarily so!!! My daughter was never exclusively breastfed. I

My understanding is that the current
recommendations are:
1. No co sleeping if either parent
smokes
2. No co sleeping if either parent takes
reacreational drugs or consumes large amounts of alcohol
3. No co sleeping on settees (couches)
The reason for the smoking is that the second hand

Prof Andrew Fleming was in a great story on Today
Tonight in Melbourne tonight.
He is the co author of a large study into SIDs
reported in the BMJ 1999 , 319: 1457 -1462
In this study it was shown that the risk of SIDS
was halved if the baby slept in the same room as the parents -as did an
There is a hospital in Santa Cruz, California that
has queen size beds in the postpartum ward (not a rumour, I have seen them with
my own eyes, with mum, dad, and baby all snuggled up in one), nice, coloured,
soft bedspread too, Dominican Hospital, Santa Cruz. There may be other hospitals
it comes back to individual choices, the mothers and the midwives. Being
one of those night-duty girls, my Mum's get 'encouraged' to co-sleep if it's
a choice they want. I find that a lot of Mum's be they primeps or multis'
look at you for advice or approval.
We do talk about the risks
There are hospitals in Australia that have this

Hi Jessica,
You can find out about these workshops
here:
ACU has placed an advertisement in Birth Matters asking pregnant women (in Vic) to consider participating in the Community
Follow Through Journey. They also and have made a very nice brochure
inviting women to contact the coordinator Betty McGuinness
03 5336 5397.
Btw I think its OK
Interesting thought Judy. I've often wondered the same.
I breastfed daughter no.3 for 6 months. But around that time I fed her her
first solids of *shame shame* whipped cream from the spoon whilst I was
preparing for a dinner party.. She is now a *big* girl ( at 15) who lusts
after food 24/7.
It's not only the midwives losing their skills, so are the obstetricians for
the very same reasons.

I'm struggling with this theme of links between breast feeding and

how society view large people than the health issues for many of us. I

It was my understanding that bedsharing was only
believed to be a risk factor in SIDS if the parents sharing the bed are
smokers. That is what I uncovered when researching SIDS for an
epidemiology assignment (18 months ago). Has this changed to all forms of
co-sleeping?

Hi Jessica,
Not sure if you know about the local active birth workshops
here in Adelaide, there is an excellent one run by Vanessa Shribman at the Coast
Yoga Centre in Glenelg. She often has students (one ata time) attend
the workshops, run in conjunction with her partner Thomas Dellman(
Dear Jessica,
They are run by Birth International who organises ozmidwifery
list. The website is www.birthinternational.com and the
workshop will be in Adelaide on the 17th and 18th of June. I went to one years
ago and got a lot out of it.
Good luck
