Dynamic audio software for Mac and a little for Windows and Iphone

2010-01-14 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I'm browsing through the company's news letter http://www.rogueamoeba.com/ so
bare with me whilst I talk about some of the amazing products this company
make, probably the most famous one of all is Audio Hijack Pro, this application
allows you to hijack any audio source on your Mac whether that be
applications such as Skype, DVD Player, Itunes or Safari playing radio streams.
Once the audio is Hijacked you can Record the output to a file, the source
can include physical audio devices as well such as sound cards and devices, USB
radio sets such as the Audio Shark etc. You can Schedule these sources so
that recording is activated and deactivated at certain times and much much much
more.

Fission is a small but yet simple and easy to use audio editor which can be
integrated into Audio Hijack Pro's operation. For example, made a recording
and wish to give it a trim? Press the Edit button in the Audio Hijack Pro
application and the recording is loaded into Fission or any other audio editor
for the Mac you set through Audio Hijack Pro's preferences.

Nicecast is the application that makes broadcasting over the Internet a snap
and - like Audio Hijack Pro - it hijacks both applications and physical sound
sources, they're then streamed using a variety of methods including the widely
used shoutcast so you can be up and broadcasting to the world with just one
simple keystroke right out of the box as it were.

airfoil for Windows and Mac is the great way to stream audio/video from one
computer to an Airport Express or another computer, iphone or device using
Airfoil Speakers, this companion application turns the computer into a remote
pair of speakers. Like the products mentioned above, Airfoil Hijacks
physical sound devices and other audio applications running and streams the
audio to the target device.

And finally, we have the best product yet I reckon from this company so let me
quote you a small portion of the newsletter to put you in the picture regarding
Radio Shift, this application allows you to search through thousands of radio
stations on the Internet and associated programmes through a regularly updated
programme guide database. Find something you think you'll like? Just set Radio
Shift to handle it and the programme will be ready to play, even if it
started playing 5 minutes ago you'll be able to hear it all in its entirety
from and you can pause the audio whilst having a cup of tea letting Radio Shift
take care of what remains to be recorded, anyway on with the quotation.

 1. Radioshift 1.5 Is Here!

Late last month, we released a major update to Radioshift, our internet radio
player and recorder. This free update focused on improving many different
 aspects of Radioshift.

To start, Radioshift now supports 1000s of new streams which were previously
only available via web-based players, including some of the worldâ•˙s most
 popular streaming stations.

Weâ•˙ve also worked to improve Radioshiftâ•˙s reliability. With version 1.5,
when errors are detected with a stream, Radioshift will attempt to get the
stream playing again by restarting it. It will also attempt to load backup
streams when they're available. Even with less reliable streams, Radioshift
will be working to make sure you get your audio, automatically.

There are plenty of other updates in Radioshift 1.5, from an improved
interface to support for transmitting its audio via Airfoil╉and much more!
Best of all, all of this is entirely free for owners of Radioshift. So if you
already use Radioshift and you're on Mac OS X 10.5 or higher, get it now.

Re: C-Crane Transmitter Question

2010-01-14 Thread Tim Grady
You must be nuts. Certainly you are giving out incorrect information probably
because of your ignorance of Jtunes and or Itunes, certainly the Airport
Express, which puts all of the transmitters that I've tried to shame.
On Jan 9, 2010, at 11:22 AM, DJ DOCTOR P wrote:

 High Tom,
I agree with you on that.
It is way to much trouble for anyone to go through, especially if you can't
 see.
Also, the thing about ITunes, is you have to have a peace of software that's
 called JTunes.
And that's just to make ITunes blind user friendly.
But most people don't have $1000 to spend on a peace of software that limits
 you to one application.
Where is the since in that?
The radio transmitter, is a way cheaper way to get your tunes from your
computer to anywhere you may want to take it around your home.
 I have two transmitters.
One on my computer, the other one on my satellite dish receiver.

 To John and Dane: this Airport thing sounds like it'd be more trouble;
you've got to have a speaker here; a speaker there..I like how the
transmitter works as far as just being able to turn on a radio..and you can
hear the computer (I had thought it used to be louder)..but maybe not; also,
often I have to turn the radio up loud enough to hear the thing I'm
listening to..and get a bit of a hum! Oh well..I've lived with it all this
time (got the transmitter in the Christmas of 04)..this amplifier thing that
John talks about might be a thought; mainly wanted to see if what I'm
experiencing is normal for this transmitter (I can make it as loud as the
station should sound)..aw but then the s sounds sound distorted!

High Tim,
I know that I am right because I have tried all of those things out, they
are a pain in the rear.

ITunes by itself, is not blind user friendly.
There are allot of things that Jaws just won't let you pick up.
This is why you need JTunes.
But like I said, that peace of software cost $1000.
So, who is nuts, not I!

probably because of your ignorance of Jtunes and or Itunes, certainly the
Airport Express, which puts all of the transmitters that I've tried to

RE: Balanced lines

2010-01-14 Thread Frank Cuta
Another approach to consider is balanced lines. There is a lot on the
web about the technology if you wish to read up on it. The basic
concept is to use a center tapped transformer at both ends of the line
which nulls out any interfearance that occurs between the two
transformers. I often run 100 feet and several hundred feet is common.
You need a pair of transformers at each end for stereo, I think last
time I looked they were about $10 each at radio shack. You would also
need to purchase 3 conductor shielded cables for each channel which
could cost $20-$30 each.

Speaking of transmitters and things

I presently have a system where I have to use very long RCA to RCA
cables
connecting my Emagic sound card to my computer. I am talking about
more
or less ten meters. I now get some kind of ground hum because of the
length of the cable. Is there some other way of transmitting high
fidelity
sound over long distance? I could perhaps rather try to lay a USB cable
of
the same length?

First, if I were you I would quit saying that Jtunes was anywhere near $1000.
In fact, though I don't use Jaws, I happen to know that Jtunes is just a set of
Jaws scripts, and though I haven't checked the price lately, I would be
surprised if it were near $100. Secondly, if you are saying you needed sighted
assistance to use the Airport Express and you still couldn't get it to work but
I manage to use it every day with no sight well enough said. Third, I happen
to know some of the people on this list and know that it would be easy for them
to use if only they weren't listening to the bogus information you were putting
out.

m p 3 and wave files to N L S digital reader

2010-01-14 Thread scott
Greetings: My name is Scott. I'm new to the group. It has been
informative to read through the archives.

Is anyone aware of an open source solution that will allow me to convert
a series of m p 3 and wave files, and compile them into the digital book
format used by the National Library Service's digital book reader.

I am not looking for something I have to pay for, as I just want to
listen to my personal instructional m p 3 files on the N L S player and
have the ability to index them, create bookmarks, put them on a blank
cartridge and make use of the digital player that I carry with me
anyway.

I prefer open source, as I use only the Linux operating system, but a
Windows solution is better than nothing.

I am utterly ignorant regarding the N L S format, so if someone is
willing to take time to summarize the format used or provide a good link
for self-learning, I'd be equally thankful.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Scott

Hi!

I'm browsing through the company's news letter
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/ so bare with me whilst I talk about some of
the amazing products this company make, probably the most famous one of
all is Audio Hijack Pro, this application allows you to hijack any
audio source on your Mac whether that be applications such as Skype, DVD
Player, Itunes or Safari playing radio streams. Once the audio is
Hijacked you can Record the output to a file, the source can include
physical audio devices as well such as sound cards and devices, USB
radio sets such as the Audio Shark etc. You can Schedule these
sources so that recording is activated and deactivated at certain times
and much much much more.

Fission is a small but yet simple and easy to use audio editor which can
be integrated into Audio Hijack Pro's operation. For example, made a
recording and wish to give it a trim? Press the Edit button in the
Audio Hijack Pro application and the recording is loaded into Fission or
any other audio editor for the Mac you set through Audio Hijack Pro's
preferences.

Nicecast is the application that makes broadcasting over the Internet a
snap and - like Audio Hijack Pro - it hijacks both applications and
physical sound sources, they're then streamed using a variety of methods
including the widely used shoutcast so you can be up and broadcasting
to the world with just one simple keystroke right out of the box as it
were.

airfoil for Windows and Mac is the great way to stream audio/video from
one computer to an Airport Express or another computer, iphone or device
using Airfoil Speakers, this companion application turns the computer
into a remote pair of speakers. Like the products mentioned above,
Airfoil Hijacks physical sound devices and other audio applications
running and streams the audio to the target device.

And finally, we have the best product yet I reckon from this company so
let me quote you a small portion of the newsletter to put you in the
picture regarding Radio Shift, this application allows you to search
through thousands of radio stations on the Internet and associated
programmes through a regularly updated programme guide database. Find
something you think you'll like? Just set Radio Shift to handle it and
the programme will be ready to play, even if it started playing 5
minutes ago you'll be able to hear it all in its entirety from and you
can pause the audio whilst having a cup of tea letting Radio Shift take
care of what remains to be recorded, anyway on with the quotation.

1. Radioshift 1.5 Is Here!

Late last month, we released a major update to Radioshift, our internet
radio player and recorder. This free update focused on improving many
different aspects of Radioshift.

To start, Radioshift now supports 1000s of new streams which were
previously only available via web-based players, including some of the
worldâ•˙s most popular streaming stations.

Weâ•˙ve also worked to improve Radioshiftâ•˙s reliability. With version
1.5, when errors are detected with a stream, Radioshift will attempt to
get the stream playing again by restarting it. It will also attempt to
load backup streams when they're available. Even with less reliable
streams, Radioshift will be working to make sure you get your audio,
automatically.

There are plenty of other updates in Radioshift 1.5, from an improved
interface to support for transmitting its audio via Airfoil╉and much
more! Best of all, all of this is entirely free for owners of
Radioshift. So if you already use Radioshift and you're on Mac OS X
10.5 or higher, get it now.

WAX File Extension

2010-01-14 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hi list: This may be considered a stupid question by some on here..but am
gonna ask it anyway: what (exactly)..is a WAX file? Here's my reason for
asking: a little while back, I managed to save something (or at least I thought
I was saving it)..the program in question was a show that had been archived on
the WSM (Nashville Tennessee Radio station)..website; at that time, I had no
way to record the program, so I was able to save it (the file in question is a
WAX file; the site has since changed..and that particular show has been
removed..and the file that I saved? Well..it no longer will play! I tried
converting it to an MP3 file, thinking it might play. But I got a message
saying that the file was not a legitimate sound file (or something to that
effect)..it suggested that I play the file and record it..which..of course,
won't work for me because the file no longer play! So I guess my question is:
is there any way I can make this file play? Or is it dead in the water.and
the only thing I now can do with the file is to delete it? Hopefully I have
explained this clearly enough so it is understandable! Thanks for listening.

2010-01-14 Thread Dane Trethowan
Simple! the programme starts recording the show at the scheduled time. Suppose
you're out having a cup of tea or whatever and you return 5 minutes later to
only find that the show's been going for the last 3 minutes, you can press the
Play button to hear what's already been recorded over those last 3 minutes,
in other words from the beginning of the recording, you can pause and resume as
often as you need to - handy for when taking telephone calls and the like so
when you pause playback, Radio Shift continues to record until the scheduled
time is elapsed.

Re: WAX File Extension

2010-01-14 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Sylvia and list: Yes..I figured it was something like that; I also
suspect (hope I'm wrong)..that they only work for as long as the server
they're on still has it; in other words, if that particular show were still
being archived, I could play it! But since it's not..well..I might be out
of luck! It's a shame too, for I never really got to hear it; it was one
of those things I was always going to listen to later..but never did! But
if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can make that file play, feel free
to let me know!

Subject: WAX File Extension

Hi list: This may be considered a stupid question by some on here..but am
gonna ask it anyway: what (exactly)..is a WAX file? Here's my reason
for asking: a little while back, I managed to save something (or at least
I thought I was saving it)..the program in question was a show that had
been archived on the WSM (Nashville Tennessee Radio station)..website; at
that time, I had no way to record the program, so I was able to save it
(the file in question is a WAX file; the site has since changed..and
that particular show has been removed..and the file that I saved?
Well..it no longer will play! I tried converting it to an MP3 file,
thinking it might play. But I got a message saying that the file was not
a legitimate sound file (or something to that effect)..it suggested that
I play the file and record it..which..of course, won't work for me
because the file no longer play! So I guess my question is: is there any
way I can make this file play? Or is it dead in the water.and the only
thing I now can do with the file is to delete it? Hopefully I have
explained this clearly enough so it is understandable! Thanks for
listening.

Tom Kaufman

Re: system access to go

2010-01-14 Thread Tom
System Access To Go is not directly related to audio so
therefore is off topic for the PC Audio list. Please keep
posts on topic.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: C-Crane Transmitter Question

2010-01-14 Thread Tom
Please be civil with comments to the PC Audio list.

You must be nuts. Certainly you are giving out incorrect
information probably because of your ignorance of Jtunes and
or Itunes, certainly the Airport Express, which puts all of
the transmitters that I've tried to shame.
