Converting stereo .mp3s to mono

2010-06-11 Thread Joel Deutsch
Hi all,

I've lost my hearing in one ear (the left) because of a complicated brain
tumor story. But when I work out, I still prefer to have some rock music in
one ear bud.

I have a copy of EZ CD/DVD Creator, a fairly recent build, and the designer
sent me a file he said would merge to two channels for me.

But it involves a file extension that neither I nor my Windows XP Home has
ever heard of, and I can't run the file and get a list of mono preferences
for bps rate to appear beneath the stereo output options.

Can anyone help? It's kind of primitive, audio-wise, to go back to mono like
early Beatles records, but I gotta do it.

Thanks,
Joel

Joel,

I think this will do what you want:

Go to the Easy CDDA Extractor File Converter. For the format of your output
file choose WAV (standard). When this format is selected, The bit rate
selection drop-down will include several mono options. If you need some
other format for your player to recognize the file, I suppose you can
reconvert it, and, since the source file will now be mono, so will the
second output file.

Hope that works.

Hello,
Switch Audio File Converter will also do this for you too as well.
All you have to do is, convert the MP3 files to *.wav.
It will give you some options to choose from.
Just select the one that suits you best.
Then after that, just click the convert button, and you're all sat!
But if you need to convert the files back to *.mp3, just use Switch to do
it.

But only, select *.mp3 as the file type and then click the convert button.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

Dear Dana and Doc,

I'm a little confused. The advice of both of you involved converting an
existing .mp3 sound file to .wav format, and somehow or other making it
mono.

But aren't .WAV files huhge? Isn't that's what's on a commercial CD? Is this
any good for an .mp3 player like my Sansa, or will a few tunes fill up the 2

Hello Joel,
I could be a little off here, but converting the file to *.wav is the only
way you'll be able to change the phonics of the file from stereo to mono.

But like I said, you can convert the files back to *.mp3.
But only, the new *.mp3 files will be in mono rather then stereo.
The files that are on store bought CD's, are*.cda.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Hi Joel, if you have GoldWave here is what you need to do
Open your stereo file and hit ctrl+A to select the whole track. Go to
the effect menu and choose stereo submenu. From there, go to the channel
mixer... and hit enter. Use the arrows to find monomix. Hit enter and
Wayt for the process to be finisced. Now you can save it as an mp3 again.

Hope this helps

Re: Converting stereo .mp3s to mono

2010-06-11 Thread Dana S. Leslie

Joel,

.wav files are large. But they're not THAT large. I'm sure you can fit, at
least, an album or two's worth of tracks on a 2Gb player.

I guess it all depends on how much material you want to keep on the player,
at any given time. and, as I suggested, if you do run into space problems,
you can always convert the mono wav files back into mp3s. But, this time,
since your source files is mono, so will your output file be.

Re: Converting stereo .mp3s to mono

2010-06-11 Thread Barry Chapman
You can use CDEX to convert a stereo MP3 file to a mono MP3 file and the
program is free. In the configuration encoder settings,
choose mono and the bitrate you want, then from the convert menu choose
re-encode compressed audio file.

Subject: Converting stereo .mp3s to mono

Thanks,
Joel

Barry,

Thanks. I've got CDex, and can relearn how to use it and then follow your
suggestions. Or ttry.
