Re: replacement MP3 portable player,
Hi Joe, Might I recommend the Sansa Clip zip Talking MP3 Player from http://www.talkingmp3players.com/ It meets the qualifications you listed and can hold over 64GB with the use of a microSD card. It's fully accessible. I have never listened on an iRiver, but all our customers really appreciate the sound it delivers, some of them even audiophiles. Many satisfied folks in the UK have purchased our players, and we do ship worldwide. To hear about it, just download one or both of the below files, Main Menu http://www.blind-geek-zone.net/talking-mp3-players-with-rockbox-laz-mesa-interviewed-by-rich-cavallaro/ SeroTalk http://www.blind-geek-zone.net/rockboxed-sansa-clip-zip-talking-mp3-player-presentation/ All the best, Laz From: joe paton j...@vi-ability.demon.co.uk To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: replacement MP3 portable player, Message-ID: 20130508221228.1817018c...@mdfmta005.tch.inty.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Hi folk, I'm looking to replace my IRiver mp3 player. This is the 40 GB model, and to be frank, I've haven't had a portable device with audio as good as the IRiver. Maybe the Archose was close, but the IPod or Ipad get close but no cigar. So I'm looking to replace this beast, with similar or higher storage capacity, I'd like it to play mp3/4/wma/ogg formats. Connect and permit the use of any file manager, but obviously Windows explorer is the native tool on most windows based machines. What i'm saying is that I really hate ITunes for this type of thing, and it's handy to be able to connect your device to a machine which may not have ITumes and be able to copy (lend,) music from colleagues. I'd welcome any recommendations list members may have, but I am based in the UK so items available in the states would of course be only of academic interest. Re: the tiny tunes player
I tried to warn folks about this player months ago by responding to any emails that I saw regarding this con. There were many exaggerations and misrepresentations in these emails and even on their site itself. IN fact, if you go to their site today, you'll see that they claim 70 hours of battery life! i think most of us know that this is a wild exaggeration to say the least. they also still claim that it's the only MP3 player which you don't have to look at the screen to use, it's the first MP3 player that talks, etc. I feel sorry for all of those who fell for this con job. All I can say is that I tried to shed some light on it months ago. I'm not even going to try to promote my own Talking MP3 Players in this message, just that i feel very sorry for those who got ripped off. Happy holidays everyone! Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
Hi Dane, I'm glad they have your permission to do what they feel. Phew! that's a load off my mind! LOL! I don't know if you got up on the wrong side of the bed or what, but your comments are a bit off the mark to say the least. First of all, I don't make a huge profit as other companies which sell over-priced MP3 players to the blind do. It does help to put food on the table and keep a roof over my family's heads. There is no rip off occuring, I provide more than just a great product, I provide far more than that. I provide all they need on their players, including a Quick-Start Guide, free tech support for life, written instructions as well as walking them through any part of using their MP3 players, no matter how technologically inclined they are. Which actually brings up another point, that being that not all blind/vision-impaired folks have the same technological know how that apparently you do, and these people don't mind paying for the great service they get so that they don't have to save money for months so that they can afford a Victor Stream, BookSense, or similarly over-priced MP3 player just so they can play their MP3 files. Some people don't have the time to waste trying to Rockbox an MP3 player, while others just want a finished product so that they don't have to tinker with it. To this date, no one has claimed that they were ripped off. My presentation is not about selling my products first and foremost, I was invited to do this presentation about Rockbox and decided to do it as people should know about what Rockbox can do. I was told I could mention my company and give my website, and I do plan to do that as well. In the past, I have enjoyed reading your posts, but after this attempt at character assassination you've just attempted on me, a complete stranger to you, I will have to forego any more communication from you out in Oz. It's funny but a lot of your countrymen have a different outlook on my services than you do, but like you stated, it's a free country, so do what you want, I certainly won't twist your arm to purchase one of my players any time soon. RE: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
Hi Matthew, Thanks for the benefit of a doubt, which Dane completely neglected to give to a complete stranger. I don't charge for Rockbox and never have. I make available an alternative to the higher-priced MP3 players for thos who don't have the know-how, time, or experience to do for themselves. Not everyone in the blind community has the knowledge to install Rockbox on their player and set it up for themselves. I do that for them and they pay me a little extra to provide them with the finished product, and I help them with using it and enjoying their listening choices, which brings them pleasure that they would have had to pay hundreds of dollars for if they used another alternative, which perhaps they weren't in financial shape to do. Yes, Rockbox is open source and free, and some people find it easy to install, while others do not. It is these people that I help out with my service. No one is forced to purchase anything, and I'm completely honest with anyone who I deal with. I have sent many people to rockbox.org, only to have them call me back and ask me tons of questions or to have me Rockbox their player for them. Unlike Dane, I do know what I'm talking about. Laz Matthew C matthew.care...@gmail.com wrote: I would wonder if he could get around that by just saying he is charging for the labor to do it? Instead of charging any money for the actual program? Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
This may be interesting to those of you who have questions about what Rockbox can do on an affordable MP3 player. News Wire: Laz MESA will be discussing Rockbox, a replacement firmware which can be used with some MP3 players and which takes advantage of the hardware capabilities of the MP3 players. Not only does it surpass the capabilities of the original firmware, but it also adds accessibility to those MP3 players by enabling them to speak. He'll be demonstrating the basic functions of Rockbox, accessing the time and date, battery charge level, playing files, using bookmarks, using the FM radio, accessing content on the microSDHC card, etc. Laz will be demonstrating these functions on the latest addition to his line of affordable Rockboxed Talking MP3 Players, the Sansa Clip Plus. The website to visit is: http://www.talkingmp3players.com/ He will then answer any questions from listeners. RE: MP3 players pre-loaded with Rockbox
Hi chris, You should try listening to a Rockboxed Sansa Fuze, it sounds fantastic! E ven better than the E200 Series players! Here's what one gets with a player purchase from Accessible Electronics: the player (including USB cable and earphones), completely set up and speaking, initial instructional email and Quick-Start Guide, plus the Rockbox manual for the specific player. One also gets the utilities one may need for whatever one wishes to do with their player. *Free* tech support via email, phone, and Skype, including walking someone through whatever procedure they need to be walked through. 90-day replacement warranty. Shipping handling is free in the US and discounted on international orders. With iPods you may not need to use VoiceBox, which is very simple to use BTW, but you do have to use iTunes to do anything with your player, and as you know, not everyone takes to iTunes like a duck to water, with some people ending up paying the extra $75 for Brian Hartgen's JAWS scripts. The other thing about iPods is that you're paying a lot more for what you get as far as capabilities go. Sure, there's some give and take no matter which way one looks at it, but I'd prefer to have the expandable memory, have control of where I put my files, and the ability to use it as a mass storage device if I choose to. Plus there's no touch screen challenge. The iPod Touch is more like a PDA, rather large when compared to a Sansa player, and a lot more expensive, especially if one drops it or it gets stolen. I myself have an iPod Touch, but I don't use it for listening to my audio files, as it's very cumbersome to control when compared to a Rockboxed Sansa Talking MP3 player. I mainly use it for the applications and use my Sansa Fuze for my listening pleasure. Comparing these two devices is like comparing apples to oranges, no pun intended. LOL! Regards, Laz Christopher Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com wrote: I haven't ordered a Rockbox loaded MP3 player from Accessible Electronics, but I have used Rockbox on the Sansa E200 series of MP3 players. I'd definitely give it a favorable review. You'll have a MP3 player with talking menus, great sound quality and it won't set you back a lot financially. I'm not sure what you get with Accessible Electronics, but with a utility called VoiceBox, you can create voice clips for the folders and files on your player, so you'll hear the names of the folders and files spoken when you move around the file system of your MP3 player. You can also change the batteries of the Sansa's and swap out the memory cards for more storage. You can just use Windows Explorer to copy your music over to your MP3 player or a music library manager like Winamp. IMHO, the only other real option is the iPods from Apple. They'll probably be a bit simpler to use, in that you don't have to use a utility like VoiceBox to get the folders and files on your MP3 player spoken to you. You don't have the option of just copying your files over to the iPod, you'll have to use iTunes. The iPod Touch may also have more features than you're looking for, but that's also one of its advantages. Good luck in whatever you decide! RE: problem with files on Sandisk Sansa MP3 player
Hi Wendy, May I ask where you got the Sansa? Did you buy it from someone, or did you Rockbox it yourself? I think you're in the UK, so I kind of have an idea where you might have purchased it, if you did get it from someone else. I'm surprised the instruction manual said to use the Music folder, as that is a folder I steer my customers away from, and it is apparently the problem you are running into. The Music folder seems to be part of the DRM-protection scheme inherent in the Sansa players, and it does do some very strange things, like disappearing files. Sometimes, the whole folder disappears, and you won't be able to see it on your computer! Just create a folder called My Music or something similar and copy the folders out of the Music folder and into it instead. That would be the first thing to take care of. There may be other reasons why the files aren't showing up on the player, but this is the first thing that needs to be corrected. Re: getting speech on my ipod
Excuse me John, but he's talking about a 16-GB Nano. It's not supported by Rockbox and to turn the speech on, I believe you need to use iTunes whether it's a 4th or 5th gen Nano. He said he just won it, and I suspect it's at least a 4th gen Nano. Rockbox only supports some very early models of iPods. I may not be as versed in the iPod line as I am in the Sansa line when dealing with Rockbox, but your statement was incorrect and misleading to the person asking the question. Also, someone else claimed that Rockbox would get rid of the original Apple firmware and as far as I know, it doesn't replace the firmware, it's a dual-boot system and doesn't get rid of the Apple firmware at all. I hope that helps clear things up a little. Laz DJ DOCTOR P djdoct...@att.net wrote: Hello, ITunes has nothing to do with getting speech on the IPod. Re: bit rate and sample rate
The sampling rate doesn't make a difference in the size of the file, so there shouldn't be any consideration to go below 44. I've seen a lot of files encoded at 22 because the person thought it would halve the file size, but that's only an old wives tale. Try it yourself and see if it makes any difference in the size of the file. Encode the same thing at the same bit rate but at 22 and at 44 sampling rates and take a look at the file sizes. As for bit rate, whatever sounds good to your ears. I myself prefer at least 64 for mono recordings because once you start going below that, the digital artifacts start to creep in. This translates to at least 128 for stereo recordings. Some people are ok with the lower sampling rates and lower bit rates, while others can't stand to even listen to MP3 files at all, no matter what the bit rate or sampling rate. It's a very personal thing, so whatever sounds good to your ears is your answer. Laz Joe wrote: Here's an interesting question. I've experimented with a lot of different bit rates and sample rates doing voice recordings but still don't know what combination of the two give good enough quality for speech. I know you need higher rates for music, at least 128KBPS. I'm only talking about voice recordings using a mic at this point. What combination of bit and sample rate will take the least space and give me fair quality speech audio. What should be higher. The bit rate, or the sample rate. I'm talking about MP 3 files. I'd like to get a better understanding of this. Thanks in advance. Joe. -- Talking MP3 players! Accessible affordable! RE: accessible MP3 players
It's the Rockbox manual for that particular model. A lot of people find the Rockbox manual to be not so blind friendly as you stated. It's fine also if you can muddle your way through the geek-speak, which again, there are some people who would have a hard time getting through. This is one of the main reasons that I offer the free tech support for anyone who purchases a player from us. The PDF manuals could stand to be a bit blind friendlier. The funniest thing is that when you use Adobe Reader to convert it to a text file, it never comes out right. For example, either you end up with one word per line, the text on some pages is all mushed up together, or any words with the letters fi in them are missing those letters, as in file becomes le. These are instances which have been described to me by customers trying to read these PDF manuals via Adobe Reader. Laz You wrote: I'm not sure what manual you get with the player, but I assume it would be the Rockbox manual for that player. Hi Joanne, The guides are right on the player itself. The Quick-Start Guide is in text format, so you can open it up with Notepad or any word processor. Re: accessible MP3 players
Hi Casey, Glenna ordered the Fuze. The way to get it to speak right out of the box is to plug the earphones in and turn it on. If it doesn't speak after about 5 or so seconds, it most likely just needs a reset, which is accomplished by holding the power button in the on position for 15 seconds and then letting it go. Simple as that. Of course you also get the free tech support and the 90-day replacement warranty in case something doesn't work right. Re: Are any apple MP 3 players blind accessible?
Hi Joe, There are several models of Apple's MP3 players which can be made to speak. There are some early models of iPods which can be made to speak with Rockbox, then there's the Shuffle some generation or other and up, there's the Nano from 4th generation and on up, and the iPod Touch some generation or other and up. The 5th generation Nano and iPod Touch both have VoiceOver, Apple's screen reader, while the earlier models use voice clips to voice the items, much as Rockbox has done it for years. However, some people find it necessary to spend the extra money for the jTunes scripts so that they can use iTunes, which you need in order to do anything with your MP3 player. So as you can probably see, the price starts to add up. These MP3 players will play whatever you download from iTunes and if you wish to transfer your own files to it, iTunes will convert your files to a file format the Apple MP3 player can play. I myself have used a 4th generation Nano and was not very impressed by the voiced menu items and what it did voice of the folders and files. I was extremely disappointed with the jerkiness of the touch pad, which is shaped like a scroll wheel but is stationery instead. I ended up making changes to the settings which my sighted son had to go in and change back for me. Needless to say, I sold these off very quickly. I don't think any of these MP3 players offer expandibility, an FM radio, or recording capability, except for the iPod Touch, which I believe offers some recording with a special headset with a microphone and some sort of FM which I believe plays stations that offer broadcasts over the internet, but I leave that to others who know more about these players than I. Personally, the only one that I would be interested in trying out is the iPod Touch, but I can't afford one. Regards, Laz You wrote: Well, the subject line asks the question. Re: portable amplified speaker system for mp3 players
Hi John, If you're looking for tiny plug-in speakers with audiophile qualities, I'm afraid you'll probably have to spend megabucks if you can even find such an animal. You won't find much bass in most tiny plug-in speakers. I compared these to another plug-in speaker selling for nearly twice as much and found these to be better in the bass department and in the stereo separation department, but they're still tiny plug-in speakers and will sound tinny when compared to a higher-quality and bigger set of speakers. I personally use these for when I wish to listen to an audiobook without having the headphones on and while I'm doing something else in the room. You could use them for listening to music, but don't expect it to sound like a stereo system. Hope that answers your question. Laz You wrote: Hello Laz Mesa, What do those speakers sound like? I myself, have been looking for a pare of portable powered speakers that I can plug in to my cell phone that doubles as an iPod. But they have to sound really good. There are no wires to mess about with. It's a cylindrical design with the stereo speakers on either end. The sound is amplified so that one doesn't have to listen with headphones on. Re: ZenStone Question
Hi Vicki, When you delete files from the player, use the shift plus delete key combination instead of just pressing the delete key. If you just use the delete key, it sends it to a recycle bin on your player, which can't be seen when you look for it, and you'll have all those deleted files taking up storage space. Thank you Bill Gates! Whether you safely remove the player or not has nothing to do with this problem. Not safely removing your player causes some other more serious problems though. You may have to reformat your player to get rid of the current *deleted* files, but it shouldn't be a problem anymore if you delete them as described above. Regards, Laz I always use the safely remove hardware feature. I've had it for almost two years, and this just started in the last couple of months. My heart is in his hands. Re: zenstone versus the ipod
Well, I can say that I've tried the Zen Stone, which was a screenless one; I've tried Rockbox on a Sansa; and I've tried a 4th generation iPod Nano. IN the past, I had also tried a Samsung Pebble and a chinese-made mp3 player, both of which were screenless. I have to say that the Rockboxed Sansa was most impressive to me. It definitely has more bang for the buck, and I found it to be the most-accessible option for under $100.00 for 2, 4, 6, or 8 GB, expandable memory, FM stereo, voice notes, recording from FM, and playes many different file types, while speaking the menus and being able to set up your folder and file names to be spoken as well. From personal experience, i must say that the learning curve on the iPod side seems a lot more complicated when compared to Rockbox on the Sansa players. Also with the iPods, you have to get used to using iTunes as well! With the Rockboxed Sansa, all you have to do is to copy and paste your files onto your player and off you go.
