Re: Removing Pops and clicks
Hi, Robert, I use Wave Corrector. It's fast, works well right out of the box, and you really don't need to worry about the graphic portions of the thing, and it costs $45. Goog le it for the correct site. Jay - Original Message - From: Robert Stokes [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. The quality of the recordings is generally very good but some do have annoying pops and clicks. I've tried using the presets in Sound Forge's 'Pop and Crackle remover without much success. I could probably get rid of some of the noises manually but that would be far too time consuming. If anyone can offer advice or knows of another programme for removing unwanted sounds, I'd love to hear from them. Best. Re: Revise understanding frequency question
Hi, Rod, Not sher where your boundaries of comprehension are concerning frequency. I gather that you know the basic concept, that is, frequency as we normally use the term indicates the number of cycles per second of, presumably, a periodic occurrence, and the unit of frequency is the hertz which is one cycle per second. You can have random patterns of vibrations that occur within a narrow band of frequencies. For examble, the sh sound is no periodic, but depending on the mouth cavity of the person saying it, the sh sound may fall with a band from, say 2200 to 4000 hertz. Having said that, you can develop your ears to determine at least approximate frequencies by using your sound editor's tone generator as an ear trainer and/or you can employ any musical instrument as a reference, knowing that, for example, middle C is approximately 261 hertz and the a above that is exactly 440 herts if in tune. I would say that most folks who've been dabbling in this stuff for awhile have developed such concepts. Now, as to eliminating frequencies in a vocal track, don't waist your time unless you jsut wanna experiment to see what else disappears when you try to x out a vocal. Getting rid of AC hum is easy because it's a simple sound with usually, 2 or three components: the 60 hz fundamental and two harmonics above, each separated by 60 hz. Filtering those out will also delete any other vibrations of that frequency that happen by, but due to the nature of the music itself, you're not apt to notice those deletions. Now for example, let's say that we wanted to keep Nelson Riddle's orchestral palate but delete Frank Sinatra's vocalizing of the phrase, Allo the Way. Well! you not only have the basic three notes of the melody to delete, but also, all the variations caused by his vibrato and all the overtones of the voice itself. This, in turn, is made more complicated by the fact that each vowel has its own formant, a frequency band of higher intensity that tells you what the vowel it. An o will emphasize those frequencies around 500 to 600 hz, and a long e will tweak the band around 3000 to 4000 hz. So, without software that lets you see where all those things show up in the spectrum and also lets you delete them, your sol. Hope this clears up some stuff. Re: A techy question re mp3 file creation and playback
Hi, Donald, Are you sher you're telling it right? The bit rate has nothing to do with the speed, the sampling rate does. The bit rate deals with resolution of dynamics and such. Instead, is this what you do: you record the nls tape at twice the normal speed and use a sampling rate of 32000, 16-bit and then, save the .wav file as a 16000kbps sampling rate and still 16-bit? Once converted to .mp3, that file would then play back at normal speed. Jay - Original Message - From: Donald L. Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Monday, March 14, 2005 10:05 AM Subject: A techy question re mp3 file creation and playback Hello, When I record NLS tapes, I create .wav files at 16000 KHZ, 32 bit using Goldwave 5.10. Then, to compensate for the double speed recording, I change the sampling rate to 16 bit so the recordings will play at normal speed. On a couple of occasions when creating mp3 files with C D E X, I remember encountering a situation where the mp3 file which I had created played at either half the recording speed or double the recording speed, I don't remember which. So the question is this--Using C D E X or some other program, is there some means by which I can create an mp3 file and then play it back at half of the speed at which it was recorded? One word of clarefication: I am not talking about bringing the mp3 into GoldWave and then down sampling. I want to record the mp3 at double the rate on which it can be played in Winamp, Total Recorder, or some other program. I hope I get some meaningful feedback on this because I want to streamline the recording and playback process as much as possible. Thanks in advance for ideas. Re: saving sound files as a compressed folder
Hi, This sort of compression doesn't harm any kind of file because, upon receiving, you use the same algorithm but in the opposite direction so as to decompress it. Thus, you end up with a file that is absolutely identical to the original which is to say, it _is the original, whereas, with the sort of compression used on sound files to permanently make them require less space, you end up with an entirely different kind of file. Re: total recorder questions
Hi, Joanne, It's just fine for recording. Withj the demo version you can activate all the features but the catch is that the program interrupts your recording every minute with a noise you won't wanna keep unless you're really desperate and cheap. grin There's a dialog box in which you set the length of recording time and that goes from 15 seconds up to 15 hours. Is the sound quality good when recording from tapes or records, or would there be a better program (either total recorder pro or another program) for getting music from these formats? Re: Music composition programs and jaws
Hi, Yah, Sibelius is simply fantastic, provided you order and install the Jaws scripts that David Pinto compiled in cooperation with Sibelius. Without them, useless. With them, not only completely transparent, but they also supply a comprehensive and intuitive manual like you'll find nowhere else that not only gets you going in a logical manner, but explains the whys and wherefores of the many visual aspects that we could spend weeks in tiresome questioning of erstwhile musician friends. There are some who'll likely whine at the $300 cost of this add-on, especially when Sibelius itself is about the same price, but lemmee tellya, you'll almost wonder why they didn't charge more! nero again, duh
Hey Folks, Just what, not why, but I spent 3 hours last night tryin ta doo a cd the way I suggested before and couldn't get past tree view. Somehow it occurred to me to actually put a blank cd in the slot. (I'm using xp.) I was asked if I wanted to make an audio cd with nero, hit the spacebar, and everything was nice and easy-breezy. Fact is, in my old cd-maker, you can doo all the preparation without a cd inserted.
