installing rockbox on my iriver 320
Hi all Wondering if someone can help me with this as for many folks this specific mp3 player will be seen as coming out of noahs arc! It is big and clunky but I believe still one of the better ones ever built. I now want to install rockbox on it. Am now at the place where I must download the fpatcher file. But there seems to be a fwpatcher.exe http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/fwpatcher.exe file and a fwpatchernu.exe http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iriver/fwpatchernu.exe file. Which of them must I download? Regards Andre

Dear list, I'm not a technically advance person. Why go through all of the naggings of D I Y when you can get peace of mind by allowing someone who truly knows the product to take the edge off. I'm as savvy as they come with lots of computer related apps and stuff, but I always when something's over my head consult the experts and have no problems paying a couple a dollars for the peace of mind. It's a well spent investment and not a rip off. A rip off occurs when proper service is not provided, and by having the rockbox firmware pre-installed properly by an expert, is truly a service that gives peace of mind to all users, savvy and those of us who are non-savvy alike. I have clients who in fact pay me to do their scans, and software updates which by most of my standards any lay person should know; however they choose for the peace of mind to have me do it and are satisfied that the jobs done and done right. I don't spend a lot of time on eBay, so there was a learning curve doing this. 2) At the time, Rockbox only supported v1 of the Sansa E series firmware, so I had to contact each Sansa e280 seller and explain to them how to check the level of firmware and make sure I was getting one that had the v1 level of the firmware. 3) Once I got my Sansa e280, I had to reformat the Sansa's memory since it contained a virus. Luckily my antivirus software caught it before it got onto my hard drive. 4) After reformating the Sansa's memory, I had to download the utility to reload the Sansa's factory firmware. 5) I was finally ready to reinstall Rockbox, which fortunately went off without a hitch, but I'm very careful to install Rockbox manually and follow the instructions in the manual very carefully. 6) After getting Rockbox installed, I realized the battery in the Sansa e280 wasn't holding a charge. I consider myself pretty technically savvy, and I did get an Sansa e280 with Rockbox installed on it, but considering how much time I spent doing it, spending a few extra dollars to have it all done for me would have been money well spent. I've also spent quite a bit of my time helping others get Rockbox installed on their MP3 players, so I know there are people out there less technically savvy than I am who probably could not have done what I did to get my Sansa e280 up and running. I am informed that if one is not well versed in the protocols involved in installation of software on a portable device, that it is possible to turn it into a brick. I plan to purchase one of these devices, and frankly, in spite of my level of experience, I would be pleased to give the gentleman a few dollars to do it for me. Hi, List, There's more to the proper operation of a talking MP 3 player than installing the Rockbox folder. There's another folder involved. There are quite a few functions which I suspect that most players won't support. I'd rather have Mr. Mesa's technical support than I would want to experiment with. I have one of his units and it's excellent. Laz, I have had no contact with your busienss, but it sounds as though you provide a service that is valuable to a number of visually impaired customers. Meanwhile, Dane is one of the most valuable contributors to this list. I'm sure many of us understand Dane's principled objection to certain suppliers of products and services for visually impaired persons that charge way too much to a population with a relatively low income average. He might have been more careful in how he expressed himself, but you've come back swinging. I, for one, would like to see only respect being shown to both of you. Hi, For what it's worth. I'm from Australia and I recently bought one of these talking mp3 players from Laz of Accessible Electronics. In fact it was the Sansa clip 8gb. I have to say that I'm very satisfied with it. Now I consider myself a pretty techy kinda guy but I wanted to get a mp3 player which I could use whilst doing my fitness work. I couldn't be bothered searching for such a beast and then having to go to the shops and buy the player then go to the rockbox site and download the right rockbox version and install it etc. It was so much more convenient to get Accessible Electronics to rockbox it for me and deliver it. Also, I knew that the player would already be good to go so no worrying about that. Plus the price was very reasonable. Laz was very good to deal with as well. So there you go. I always like these presentations, because they're informative, and even if I don't necessarily buy one, it's interesting to know what's out there, and it's like a virtual hands-on store where you virtually look, and then decide. I picked up an IPhone once where someone was demonstrating one. Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
I haven't bought one of these MP3 players myself, but the last time I was shopping around for a Sansa e280, I was tempted. Here's what I spent my time doing getting that Sansa e280: 1) First, since the Sansa e280 couldn't be purchased new any more, I went to eBay to find one. I replaced that battery with a battery from one of my other Sansa e280's, which had a different problem. I don't think this is a rip off at all, and I think it's unfair to make people who are less technically savvy or have less time on their hands to feel bad or feel like they're getting ripped off when they go this route. I could change my own oil, but I choose to take my car to a place to have it done. I could do my own financial planning, but I choose to hire someone to do that for me. Paying someone for peace of mind or time saved is not a rip off. -- Christopher (CJ) chalt...@gmail.com On 03/07/2011 03:54 PM, David Truong wrote: Hi, For what it's worth. Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
Hi Dane, I'm glad they have your permission to do what they feel. Phew! that's a load off my mind! LOL! I don't know if you got up on the wrong side of the bed or what, but your comments are a bit off the mark to say the least. First of all, I don't make a huge profit as other companies which sell over-priced MP3 players to the blind do. It does help to put food on the table and keep a roof over my family's heads. There is no rip off occuring, I provide more than just a great product, I provide far more than that. I provide all they need on their players, including a Quick-Start Guide, free tech support for life, written instructions as well as walking them through any part of using their MP3 players, no matter how technologically inclined they are. Which actually brings up another point, that being that not all blind/vision-impaired folks have the same technological know how that apparently you do, and these people don't mind paying for the great service they get so that they don't have to save money for months so that they can afford a Victor Stream, BookSense, or similarly over-priced MP3 player just so they can play their MP3 files. Some people don't have the time to waste trying to Rockbox an MP3 player, while others just want a finished product so that they don't have to tinker with it. To this date, no one has claimed that they were ripped off. My presentation is not about selling my products first and foremost, I was invited to do this presentation about Rockbox and decided to do it as people should know about what Rockbox can do. I was told I could mention my company and give my website, and I do plan to do that as well. In the past, I have enjoyed reading your posts, but after this attempt at character assassination you've just attempted on me, a complete stranger to you, I will have to forego any more communication from you out in Oz. It's funny but a lot of your countrymen have a different outlook on my services than you do, but like you stated, it's a free country, so do what you want, I certainly won't twist your arm to purchase one of my players any time soon. (Rolling my eyes). Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
I guess you couldn't fit this extra attempt at character assassination on your first volley. LOL! That's right! When a person purchases an affordable Talking MP3 Player from us, it arrives speaking out of the box, and the customer doesn't have to do anything to set it up, as it's already set up for them! Amazing! Yeah, sounds like this guy should be hunted down and shot! Let's state facts only when attempting this kind of tripe. What part of the license am I violating? Or as you stated, bordering on? From the conversations I've had with the Rockbox developers over the past two years, they don't want me offering downloads of Rockbox from my site, but that I direct anyone to rockbox.org instead. That's the only problem that was brought up in any talks we've had because I had been offering updates of Rockbox for my customers on the site. What MP3 player do you use Dane? Are you perhaps an Apple enthusiast? LOL! Didn't expect this type of personal attack from a complete stranger. RE: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
Hi Matthew, Thanks for the benefit of a doubt, which Dane completely neglected to give to a complete stranger. I don't charge for Rockbox and never have. I make available an alternative to the higher-priced MP3 players for thos who don't have the know-how, time, or experience to do for themselves. Not everyone in the blind community has the knowledge to install Rockbox on their player and set it up for themselves. I do that for them and they pay me a little extra to provide them with the finished product, and I help them with using it and enjoying their listening choices, which brings them pleasure that they would have had to pay hundreds of dollars for if they used another alternative, which perhaps they weren't in financial shape to do. Yes, Rockbox is open source and free, and some people find it easy to install, while others do not. It is these people that I help out with my service. No one is forced to purchase anything, and I'm completely honest with anyone who I deal with. I have sent many people to rockbox.org, only to have them call me back and ask me tons of questions or to have me Rockbox their player for them. Unlike Dane, I do know what I'm talking about. Well, thank you Dane, for giving everyone their freedom of choice! LOL! Getting a big head there, aren't you big fella? You're saying you didn't want to ruin anyone's reputation? Um, isn't that what you just attempted to do with your character assassination attempts? Dane, I don't know you from Adam, but what you just tried to do to someone who has helped hundreds of blind/vision-impaired people have a Talking MP3 player affordably is not acceptable behaviour. Houdy las, Don't sweat him buddy. Perhaps somebody's a bit miffed cause they didn't think about capitalizing on a great product first. Remember bro, there's a lotta jealousy in the world. I'm a technically savvy person by lots of standards, however, I'm never one not to ask for help with something if I need it, and your presentation is sure going to help me and all of the folks who'll be tuning in tomorrow. The sansa clip is a great product and I'm pushing all of my friends blind or sighted to think about picking one up for themselves. I would wonder if he could get around that by just saying he is charging for the labor to do it? Instead of charging any money for the actual program? Just a thought. I don't like the policy though. As you stated I believe it is free and easy to install. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dane Trethowan Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2011 3:53 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player Hmm, not sure about this, bordering on going against the Rockbox open licence agreement, as you'll see from his web site he's selling Rockbox installed on the player. The Rockbox folder is very complex. In order for files to be spoken, there are some utilities which must be run. These are in another folder which is a part of what Mr. Mesa has in his Sansa players. I think it's wonderful to see that he has taken the time and trouble to offer these products. He is well versed in the workings of these players and is very patient with people who may have difficulties with the players, especially when they first receive them. RE: MP3 players pre-loaded with Rockbox
Hi chris, You should try listening to a Rockboxed Sansa Fuze, it sounds fantastic! E ven better than the E200 Series players! Here's what one gets with a player purchase from Accessible Electronics: the player (including USB cable and earphones), completely set up and speaking, initial instructional email and Quick-Start Guide, plus the Rockbox manual for the specific player. One also gets the utilities one may need for whatever one wishes to do with their player. *Free* tech support via email, phone, and Skype, including walking someone through whatever procedure they need to be walked through. 90-day replacement warranty. Shipping handling is free in the US and discounted on international orders. With iPods you may not need to use VoiceBox, which is very simple to use BTW, but you do have to use iTunes to do anything with your player, and as you know, not everyone takes to iTunes like a duck to water, with some people ending up paying the extra $75 for Brian Hartgen's JAWS scripts. The other thing about iPods is that you're paying a lot more for what you get as far as capabilities go. Sure, there's some give and take no matter which way one looks at it, but I'd prefer to have the expandable memory, have control of where I put my files, and the ability to use it as a mass storage device if I choose to. Plus there's no touch screen challenge. The iPod Touch is more like a PDA, rather large when compared to a Sansa player, and a lot more expensive, especially if one drops it or it gets stolen. I myself have an iPod Touch, but I don't use it for listening to my audio files, as it's very cumbersome to control when compared to a Rockboxed Sansa Talking MP3 player. I mainly use it for the applications and use my Sansa Fuze for my listening pleasure. Comparing these two devices is like comparing apples to oranges, no pun intended. LOL! I'm not sure what you get with Accessible Electronics, but with a utility called VoiceBox, you can create voice clips for the folders and files on your player, so you'll hear the names of the folders and files spoken when you move around the file system of your MP3 player. You can also change the batteries of the Sansa's and swap out the memory cards for more storage. You can just use Windows Explorer to copy your music over to your MP3 player or a music library manager like Winamp. IMHO, the only other real option is the iPods from Apple. Chris, you are right about the Mp3 players with Rockbox. Accessible electronics is a very good site and they stand behind all of the products they sell. I've had a few MP3 players that didn't have the voice feature and it was a real pain to even know when the player was on or offf. You can just use Windows Explorer to copy your music over to your MP3 player or a music library manager like Winamp. IMHO, the only other real option is the iPods from Apple. They'll probably be a bit simpler to use, in that you don't have to use a utility like VoiceBox to get the folders and files on your MP3 player spoken to you. You don't have the option of just copying your files over to the iPod, you'll have to use iTunes. The iPod Touch may also have more features than you're looking for, but that's also one of its advantages. Good luck in whatever you decide! I don't think you can go wrong either way! -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Norma A. Re: Iriver with Rockbox
Hi David, Go to the rockbox web site and download the rockbox utility. everything can be done in that program including creating of speaking menu/voice clips of your files, updating your IRiver firmware to work with rockbox if u haven't done so, installing the latest rockbox software etc. the software is quite complex and its rather difficult to explain over here. however, it should be easy to navigate around if u take some time to explore it. Hope it helps. Thanks. Re: rockbox and talk clips
That's why I never updated my Rockbox on the iRiver h120 when the final release version finally came out. I wasn't sure whether to install over the top of the beta on the iRiver or remove everything and start from scratch. I've got so many things that play music now that it hardly matters. I use the iPod Touch most of the time. Even the new Apple 4th Generation 2GB Shuffle costing around $48 talks with VoiceOver now. Do I really need it? No! But I'll probably get one anyway. I did recreate the clips with voicebox plus and am quite pleased with the 3.6 update except for the voice with the english.zip file. Yeh, I think it's pretty straightforward. I do it on my H20 and e280 all of the time. I'd suggest just following the instructions in the manual for your player using the steps for a manual install. Basically, you're just unzipping the Rockbox software and the voice menus to your player. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com From: david Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2010 8:07 PM To: pc audio Subject: updating rockbox on my iriver h320 he guies. I'm still pleating with Dishnetwork and Direct TV to invest money in this talking software for their blind subscribers. I'm also talking to Comcast Cox and Time Warner about putting this talking software on their cable boxes too as well. Because just like Dishnetwork and Direct TV, Comcast Cox and Time Warner have blind subscribers too as well. So I'm trying to make this happen across the whole board. But however, I can't do it alone, if you want this, you have to make some noise about it. I was told by all 5 companies, if enough people requested it, we may consider it. RE: Rockbox, cable boxes and TiVo [was RE: getting speech on my ipod]
This makes sense, however in addition we need to contact Motorola and other hardware manufacturers. Comcast uses Motorola products, and so does the small local company we use in my city. they are the same hardware with a bit different configuration of the same software. My cable company wants to help, however as they serve only the county where I live, it is hard to make the voices heard. I do have Comcast for internet, however I may be able to try to speak to them as a potential TV customer. I do not plan to use their TV service as I prefer the lineup and pricing offered by my local company. My voice may not be heard as well as a customer though, however I will still speak to them. I as well believe that we all need to speak to are providers and also the hardware manufacturers to encourage them to move forward with set top box accessibility. there is no reason that the software can not be made accessible as all the hardware is there to facilitate it. /David -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of DJ DOCTOR P Sent: Thursday, June 03, 2010 3:08 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Rockbox, cable boxes and TiVo [was RE: getting speech on my ipod] Hello, If my memory serves me correctly, there is something called Blue for the satellite receivers. Rockbox 3.0 - Iaudio x5 - Recording settings
Helo, I am visualy impaired and I need help with recording settings. In older version of Rockbox this menu was placed in sound settings. But after installing newer version I could not find it. I have read your manual, but there I found the information that recording settings are placed if I press jojstick on the item in main menu recording. I pressed it and there is a problem. I cannot activate the sub ittems. If I want to activate the source line in or microphone is it not possible. After pressing the key the Rockbox says something different like off or on. I cannot activate anything from this important menu. I need to activate line in or mic very often or change format, bitrate but i cannot in this version. Can you explain me how to do it? Or is it realy possible to change these important things? It is realy pity, I will return to older version of the Rockbox. Is something what I do in bad way? Can you tell me how to sett it? People who have not problem with sight can do it very easy, but not everyone has this possibility. I had Rockbox from April of this year and today i have changed it on newer. Thanks for understanding. Rockbox Voicebox plus question.
Hi Folks: Because of voice file and voice clip production problems with the Rockbox utility program, I have once again switched to Cygwin to create voice files. I am, however, still having problems with voice clip generating using the VoiceBox Plus program. Filenames are being pre-maturely cut off. Question: is there a way to tweak the VoiceBoxPlus program so that the files names will not be cut off? Any help would be appreciated all over the place. Olympus WS_311m and Rockbox
Hello List! You know, I have been told that this list is a place where one can get info about anything audio-wise; therefore I asked a question about Rockbox and Olympus WS_311m to determine whether or not they are compatible with each other. Now, I can understand if nobody knows the answer to this question and can continue looking elsewhere for the answer; however, it serves no purpose for anyone to tell someone to go to a particular web site before asking such a stupid question, which is what happened on this list to me. I am not at all happy with this attitude by a list member, who portrays himself as a bit of an expert on some topics. If you don't know the answer to a question or do not want to answer it, then I suggest this person and others with a similar attitude should shut up and be silent and let those who want to help, help. No one ever told us list members that we cannot ask stupid or silly questions if we don't know the answer to an audio problem. The list is here and I have heard or read many questions asked about Rockbox and devices it is used for and no one ever putforth such a rediculous response to something they were suppose to be doing to help. To cap it off, this person with the negative and superior attitude didn't even bother to answer the question, providing he knew it. thanks very much for time and help, as it is usually pretty good. Re: Olympus WS_311m and Rockbox
I think I know the email you're referring to, and I don't think it was mine, but let me just point out a few things There were two questions that came into this mailing list within a few days of each other, both asking about support of an Olympus player with Rockbox. I'm not sure if they both came from you or not. The first email was answered by pointing them to the Rockbox web site. I'm not sure the same person responded to both emails or not. Actually, I'm subscribed to so many lists, it's possible that these questions actually came to two separate lists. Oh well, it's possible that this person felt his first response was ignored, so his response to the second list might have had a bit of bitterness in it. I am not sure this is the case though. I don't have the response I think you're referring to in front of me, but I recall when I read it that I'm not sure the author was a native English speaker, so what you're interpreting as attitude may have just been a particular way something was worded. I know you're not saying this, but IMHO, RTFM is a perfectly acceptable answer to a question. When I respond to a question I try to do more than just point someone to a web site, but often this means I'm not doing much more than just copying something from the web site I'm referring to. This was the case when I responded to your question. A question like Does Rockbox run on this particular player? is a tough question to answer in the negative unless someone goes to the Rockbox page itself. If someone has Rockbox running on that player then there's a good chance someone will respond with that information, but unless someone has recently researched that very same question, and found out that it isn't supported, you won't get an answer. Even if someone remembers that from the last time they went to the web site, you'll only get what was true at that time, and things could have definitely changed in the interim. Bottom line, is that the most accurate, up to date and informative source of information is going to be the Rockbox web site in this case. Finally, I'd just like to point out that everyone needs to take some care in how they word their responses to questions on mailing lists, so in this sense, I totally agree with what you're saying. On the flip side though, people also need to have a bit of a thick skin when they go onto the internet. You're not picking and choosing the people you want to talk to and you're going to run into all kinds. Also figure in the fact that not everyone is a native English speaker, so things (like attitude) may be lost in the translation, not to mention that things like sarcasm and humor are so hard to convey in a email message. For these reasons, you need to focus on the bottom line, which is the information you're getting, and let some things like perceived attitude slide. TheLearningCenter wrote: Hello List! Re: Olympus WS_311M and Rockbox or any other available accessibility toolfor it
I'm guessing Rockbox doesn't support the Olympus WS_311M Recorder/Player. The only player from Olympus listed off of rockbox.org is m:robe 100. It's obviously moot now, but if you have any suggestions about Rockbox, I too would recommend checking out rockbox.org. You aren't going to get better instructions or a more authoritative source of information. IMHO, installing rockbox isn't the same as installing a Windows application; you're replacing your units firmware with open source firmware. You have to be prepared to do some reading and research. If you have any specific questions there are a lot of people and resources willing to help. Furthermore, Rockbox wasn't designed to be used by the blind, so getting it to talk and speak the files and directories on your unit will take some time and effort. If you aren't willing to go to rockbox.org and put in the time reading up on what's all involved then Rockbox probably isn't for you. Don't get me wrong, IMHO, Rockbox is well worth the time and effort; I just don't want people going in thinking that my clicking on a few buttons in an installation wizard then they'll have a talking MP3 player. constantine (on laptop) wrote: Hi I'd just like to give you some advice- check the rockbox page before you ask questions like that- it will tell you, on the homepage, what players it does not and does support. thank you Have a good day from Tyler C. Wow, I'm not sure! When I installed Rockbox on my iRiver H10, I had to download the build specifically for the iRiver H10 and then install it by hand. It didn't turn out tobe that difficult, but I did have to pay close attention to the installation instructions. Re: Rockbox
You could probably get the sandisc sansa e200 or c200. Don't get an ipod, --they're too expensive, and when you can get a mp3 player for cheaper than that, you shouldn't need to pay that much- but then again, how big do you want it to be? I currently own an ipod video, which I payed $400 for. The sansa c250, 2 gigs of memory but with expansion, was about 60 bucks. Rockbox works splendidly on the ipod video, and a note, if your getting rockbox right away, don't bother getting warranty. This is just a waiste of money, as its voided when you instal rockbox. - Tyler visit my website! http://www.valiant.789mb.com note: Make sure you have your speakers turned on to get a cool-sounding intro! - Original Message - From: Jim Ruby [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2007 11:21 PM Subject: RE: Rockbox What is the best ipod to get that will work with this software currently? I can tell you Richard that Rockbox is a piece of software written by VI guys I believe, to make some Ipods and other non-speaking portable players accessible via speech feedback. Seems in pretty well all instances installing this software, well, firmware modification, invalidates the warranty that comes with players. Sure if you do a search Google will come up with the places you can download it. (All this from someone who's not cool enough to own an IPod or any other MP3/AAC player, though I've got a Zenstone.)
