RE: Adobe Audition
Dave, It would be nice if we get someone with current information, but I can provide a little. Starting with version 3 of Adobe Audition, they began displaying some data on the screen using a method that is generally not picked up by screen readers. I used Audition a lot before that version but switched to Sound Forge. However, it is my understanding that they have done a pretty good job over time of making data that is not picked up by screen readers available through MSAA and UIA. While this is very good, it generally means that one probably will have to get scripts to get at this information. It is my understanding that there are JAWS scripts but they may not be free. The bottom line is that Adobe Audition is probably worth checking out to see if you can do what you need to do with it, but the experience may be somewhat different than with sound forge. I would be very curious to know what you are required to do with Adobe Audition that you can't do with Sound Forge. There were things I felt were easier to do with Audition, and I still sometimes get a little frustrated with selecting portions of a file with Sound Forge and wonder if I should check out Audition again. Hi, Even though there is a quite steep learning curve for Audacity it really has all you'd ever need for audio editing. And even if it doesn't have what you want it within the program you can get various plugins for free that enhances the experience dramatically, and the whole thing is so beautifully free. smile Brian -Oprindelig meddelelse- From: Steve Jacobson Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2013 5:21 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: comparing adobe audition and audacity Although I would not argue with the assessment of Audition, apparently Audition makes some of its information available through MSAA, or possibly UI Automation, so there is some possibility that it could be made more accessible with scripting. List, I use Audacity every week for recording Handiham audio lectures and a weekly podcast. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but it works very well for me. I can see and do not access it with a screenreader but I know its developers do pay attention to accessibility. Before I used Audacity, I had Cool Edit by Syntrillium software. It was bought by Adobe and turned into Audition, which I thought was out of my price range. Once I determined to learn Audacity, I really did get to like it. The tools I use most are noise reduction, normalization, automatic leveling, and the automatic trimming of silence. Re: Accessibility of Adobe Audition
Hi Donald, You're perfectly right. The problem is. We kno the songs in their original shape, and from the beginning it was meant to sound that way. When we remove noise we make the sound too steril for the time being. It's like when a photographer wants to share a special moment an evening in a pop by the river. Such a picture needs to be a little bit dull. If you turn on the cleaning lights then you won't get the right expression of the whole feeling in the situation. When the viewer was there they could see no dust or bad looking furniture, but they could feel a good intence carma in the room, which would disappear if all the lights are turned on. The same with old recordings. Then things will come up front that you didn't notice before, and don't want to notice at all in that particular musical experience. Like a bad reverb for instance, which you couldn't hear before because of the high noise floor. But it's a totolly other storry with a really noisy old audio book. Here it would be wonderful to clear up the vocal, so the words are easier to understand. Best regards Brian -Oprindelig meddelelse- From: Donald L. Re: Accessibility of Adobe Audition
Don, There are at least two things that can happen with noise reduction. First, some noise reduction algorithms do cause a loss of high frequencies. The noise reduction in Sound Forge actually has an option to add highs back, but one could do the same with an equalizer. However, hiss, itself, can make a recording sound brighter. I have heard examples where the sound spectrum with and without hiss was made the same, and the one with hiss sounded brighter. As you say, sound is very subjective in some ways, but the ear can be fooled as well. More than once I have thought I had found a tremendous set of parameters to get rid of noise on a recording, only to find there were artifacts of noise reduction that were very apparent to me when I listened the next day. It is a challenge. Best regards, Steve Jacobson to On Sat, 09 Feb 2013 16:43:25 -0800, Donald L. Roberts wrote: >I do not claim to be knowledgeable regarding noise reduction. "auto noise capture" in sound forge is great, and then the trick is to get it to lower the defaults to more than one of the saved configurations to more than 12.5 DB. Re: Accessibility of Adobe Audition
Your cautions are legitimate, but there were some changes that were intended to help screen readers between Adobe audition 2 and 3. I have not experimented enough to know where things are now, but if someone has a reason to want to use Audition, I really think it is worth trying the demo to see where things are now. Re: Accessibility of Adobe Audition
Samyuel, I am a Window-Eyes user and I used Adobe Audition in its early days and CoolEdit before then which Adobe purchased. The current version of Audition conveys information to screen readers using other methods that are not evident from the screen. Mostly, I think MSAA is used, although there could be some UI Automation. What this means is that if you just try to explore the screens with the mouse pointer, you are going to notice that some things that others see on the screen are just not there. GW Micro does have an Audition app that gets a lot of the information you need. When I tried that some time ago, it worked pretty well, but there were some gaps when dealing with certain plug-ins. I had switched to Sound Forge before these capabilities became available, though, so I didn't buy a full Audition version, and I have not tried it for a while. I would suggest that you ask on the GW-Info list, though, and I would also see if you can get a demo version and plan on really working the heck out of it for thirty days or so. I don't know if you can download a demo version or not. If you do try this, I for one would be very, very interested to hear what you find out. Also, if there are specific problems, Aaron Smith of GW Micro might be willing to see if something can be done with the app. While I am not unhappy with Sound Forge, I would consider moving back to Audition if it works reasonably. Good luck. Best regards, Steve Jacobson On Sun, 2 Dec 2012 15:21:31 -, Samuel Wilkins wrote: >Hello everyone, I am considering migrating to Adobe Audition. Hi Sam, My view might be a little subjective but from what I've tried out in the past when I got myself Adobe Audition just to take a look at it got totally worse than e.g. 2.1 version of Adobe Audition when you know they changed their label from Cool Edit which was the predecessor of that one. I wasn't confortable with that as many objects were placed without any shortcut keys on the screen beyond the menu so OK it was possible to grab them using the virtual mouse and crowling around but it was a real pain. But maybe somebody knowing more of that will chime in. I say the most blind-friendly one is Sound Forge:). For the record I don't think it'll be better with Window Eyes as the universal way of the layout and localizing the object is identical to all screen readers regardless of whether it's NVDA Jaws or Window Eyes etc. Tapin-radio coordinator URL: http://www.tapinradio.com/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/tapinradio Twitter: http://twitter.com/tapin_radio Skype: tapinradio - Puvodní zpráva - Od: Samuel Wilkins Komu: PC Audio Discussion List Odesláno: 2. prosince 2012 16:21 Predmet: Accessibility of Adobe Audition Hello everyone, I am considering migrating to Adobe Audition. Hi Brian, This may not be a practical solution but if you're familiar with Window-Eyes or perhaps want to try a demonstration copy of Window-Eyes there are Window-Eyes scripts for Adobe Audition 3 available at https://www.gwmicro.com/Script_Central/Scripts/Script_Details/?scriptid=1219 Information about the scripts are below: This script provides speech enhancements to Adobe Audition 3 when navigating around the Audition interface (for example, when using Alt-Page Up and Alt-Page Down to focus the various panes). For a list of all keyboard shortcuts, refer to the Adobe Audition Help menu. Regards Steve. On Wed, 2 Feb 2011 15:59:34 -0500 Brian Blair

My employer has Adobe Audition 1.0 and I've heard that 1.5 fixes some problems in 1.0. However, I've heard that later versions are pretty inaccessible with speech. Does anyone here have experience with the latest version of Adobe Audition? I've seen some JFW scripts for Audition 1.0 but I find Soundforge much easier to use. However, since our network of radio stations use Audition it's helpful to be able to use it, and I'd like to see us upgrade to a later version. Re: Adobe Audition
Hi again The last Audition to be accessible to Jaws was Ver 1.5. If you can get this then you should be able to access the multitrack options. It does need particular jaws scripts though and they may only work with earlier versions of Jaws and only up to Windows XP. I haven't tried this in Windows 7 - except that it hangs up Windows 7 64 bit - it might just work in 32 bit but I haven't tried. Adobe Audition
Hi! Does anyone on list use this and how do you find it compared to say Goldwave or Sound Forge. I'm in a position to purchase this software at a significant discount but I'm wondering if its even worth my while doing that given that I have Goldwave, Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 and Total Recorder already and combined these packages do an excellent job for audio, I also use Amadeus Pro extensively on my Mac so i in short the question is if I purchase Adobe Audition will it give me anything that I don't already have? Hi Brett. Sonar is a top piece of software that delivers both in the audio and midi field. It's highly accessible using either Caketalking or JSonar, although it can be quite a learning curve to get the most out of it. So, in answer to your question, no it isn't just midi and the audio part is extremely detailed and highly accessible. Re: adobe audition 1.5 jaws scrips problem
Hi Dan I did get them working beyond Jaws 7, certainly to version 9 and possibly 10. I found that they only worked if I made sure that they were in the Jaws settings - not the ones in 'All Users' but in the Jaws settings in my own profile in Documents and Settings. (This was in XP home) Maybe this is the problem. They did not work if I had 2 versions - I had to remove all the script files for Audition in the 'All User' jaws settings and only have them in my own user settings. I was told that I would need to open both audition.jss and audtips.jss separately in JFW script manager and press control+s to re-compile them. I did that with the audition.jss file. But I could not find the audtips.jss file to recompile it. 3. Opened audobe audition and everything worked. Until, I tried pressing f12 to switch to multi-track view. But it will work with window-eyes. So it is something in the scripts. Does anyone have some ideas or now where to get some scripts to fix the problem. Now The authors of this version of scripts are: Authors: James Teh, Victer Tsaran and Michael Curran. If any of these people perhaps is on the list maybe they can email me and I will work with them off list as not to clutter up the list. Re: adobe audition
Hi I've used Audition for years now but only in the 1.5 version. I use the scripts and find them very accessible especially with the Multitrack section. They were written for Jaws 7 but I did manage to install them in XP into the Jaws 9 and 10 enu setting, but they only appeared to work for me when in the Jaws settings in the User section, not the All User section. I didn't find them too good for positioning a file in a track, but for recording 8 or 4 tracks then editing they were great. I'm now onto Sonar and although the Audio effects are more limited than in Audition they work well, especially the time/pitch shift. I believe version 8.5 is better for Audio effects etc. and will find out soon when I purchase it. If you can get a copy of Audition 1.5 it may be fairly cheap - certainly cheaper than the Sonar/Caketalking route - but if you want to keep up to date then unless someone writes scripts for the Audition v3 or above versions with their new interface, then you'll be working with an old technology with older algorithms. They're good so it probably doesn't matter, but, assuming effects and options get better there will come a time when it may get left behind a bit.
