Re: [PD] display image from google search?
Many thanks I was finally able to get this to work (needed to install python-simplejson). I think it is cool, but originally I was hoping to use the search-by-image option. i.e. I upload an image and find visually similar image online. The ideas is to, eventually, get an evolving series of images that are associated with each other in some strange and unexpected ways. Does anyone know if that would be possible? Hi All, I will be performing a Pd-based audiovisual piece at the riverside studios next week as part of the Tete-A-Tete festival. http://www.tete-a-tete.org.uk/zaum-beyond-mind/ The piece Zaum: Beyond Mind explores notions of embodied musical performance in relation to the digital nature of much of the sonic visual material, and the changing relationship between different types of presence. Virtual presence takes the form of 'un-desiring' bodies as voices-off, whilst polarities between the animate and the inanimate are reversed in a 'play' between performers and instruments. Re: [PD] graph on parent problem?
hi Hans, I am attaching the patch. changing env~ parameter solved the problem. I did, however, test what happens if the vumeter is in the top patch (rather then inside the subpatch) and that doesn't create the same problem (i.e. doing [env~] without giving it a large buffer size). So there might be some additional issue with gop property there. thanks Oded ___ Oded Ben-Tal http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~oded o...@ccrma.stanford.edu #N canvas 301 37 864 693 10; #N canvas 741 317 287 398 taprhythm 0; #X obj -51 240 list prepend; #X obj -68 106 t b b b; #X obj -68 139 timer; #X obj -68 21 inlet; #X obj 45 19 inlet; #X obj -43 354 outlet; #X obj -51 270 t l l; #X obj 45 108 sel 0 1; #X obj -37 300 list; #X obj -67 73 spigot 0; #X obj -68 167 t f b; #X obj -41 194 s hit; #X msg 24 85 bang; #X connect 0 0 6 0; #X connect 1 0 2 0; #X connect 1 1 2 1; #X connect 2 0 10 0; #X connect 3 0 9 0; #X connect 4 0 7 0; #X connect 4 0 9 1; #X connect 4 0 12 0; #X connect 6 0 8 1; #X connect 6 1 0 1; #X connect 7 0 8 0; #X connect 7 1 0 1; #X connect 8 0 5 0; #X connect 9 0 1 0; #X connect 10 0 0 0; #X connect 10 1 11 0; #X connect 12 0 2 0; #X restore 104 134 pd taprhythm; #N canvas 476 0 747 410 playrhythm 0; #X obj 44 108 list split 1; #X obj 38 228 del; #X obj 93 197 list append; #X obj 44 25 inlet; #X obj 139 29 inlet; #X obj 44 75 list; #X obj 38 362 outlet; #X obj 454 324 outlet; #X obj 252 25 inlet; #X obj 38 199 * 1; #X connect 0 0 9 0; #X connect 0 1 2 1; #X connect 0 2 7 0; #X connect 1 0 6 0; #X connect 1 0 2 0; #X connect 2 0 0 0; #X connect 3 0 5 0; #X connect 4 0 5 1; #X connect 5 0 0 0; #X connect 8 0 9 1; #X connect 9 0 1 0; #X restore 28 273 pd playrhythm; #X obj 17 157 bng 15 250 50 0 empty empty play 17 7 0 10 -262144 -1 -1; #X obj 173 108 tgl 15 0 empty empty on/off 17 7 0 10 -262144 -1 -1 0 1; #X text 152 55 tap space bar; #X text 184 133 collect rhythm; #N canvas 408 70 450 300 noise 0; #X obj 166 51 inlet; #X obj 166 73 t b b; #X obj 198 118 del 100; #X msg 124 123 1 20; #X obj 132 188 line~; #X obj 70 238 outlet~; #X obj 44 181 noise~; #X obj 70 207 *~; #X msg 187 150 0 100; #X connect 0 0 1 0; #X connect 1 0 3 0; #X connect 1 1 2 0; #X connect 2 0 8 0; #X connect 3 0 4 0; #X connect 4 0 7 1; #X connect 6 0 7 0; #X connect 7 0 5 0; #X connect 8 0 4 0; #X restore 72 394 pd noise; #X obj 28 301 s hit; #X obj 28 32 r hit; #X obj 33 68 bng 15 250 50 0 empty empty empty 17 7 0 10 -262144 -1 -1; #X obj 72 359 r hit; #X obj 370 632 output~; #X obj 103 315 spigot; #X obj 142 288 tgl 15 0 empty empty loop-on/off 17 7 0 10 -262144 -1 -1 0 1; #X obj 72 428 *~ 0; #X obj 281 463 equal_power_pan~; #X obj 377 432 hsl 30 15 0 1 0 0 empty empty pan 3 7 0 10 -262144 -1 -1 0 1; #X obj 369 588 freeverb~; #X msg 444 366 roomsize \$1; #X msg 444 411 damping \$1; #X msg 444 455 width \$1; #X msg 444 499 wet \$1; #X msg 444 543 dry \$1; #X obj 456 520 hsl 60 18 0 1 0 1 empty empty dry 2 9 1 12 -225271 -1 -1 5700 0; #X obj 456 476 hsl 60 18 0 0.2 0 1 empty empty wet 2 9 1 12 -225271 -1 -1 1900 0; #X obj 456 432 hsl 60 18 0 1 0 1 empty empty width 2 9 1 12 -262131 -1 -1 5900 0; #X obj 456 388 hsl 60 18 0 2 0 1 empty empty damping 2 9 1 12 -261689 -1 -1 1475 0; #X obj 456 343 hsl 60 18 0.11 1.1 0 1 empty empty roomsize 2 9 1 12 -261689 -1 -1 4410 0; #X floatatom 426 347 3 0 0 0 - - -; #X floatatom 426 392 3 0 0 0 - - -; #X floatatom 426 437 3 0 0 0 - - -; #X floatatom 426 480 3 0 0 0 - - -; #X floatatom 426 524 3 0 0 0 - - -; #X obj 138 404 vsl 15 40 0 1 0 0 empty empty empty 0 -9 0 10 -262144 -1 -1 0 1; #X obj 198 339 catch~ sig; #X obj 71 461 throw~ sig; #N canvas 275 234 1104 536 playsample 0; #X obj 618 197 soundfiler; #N canvas 0 0 450 300 (subpatch) 0; #X array asound 144384 float 2; #X coords 0 1 144384 -1 200 140 1; #X restore 346 86 graph; #X obj 618 119 openpanel; #X floatatom 543 336 5 0 0 1 length - -; #X msg 618 157 read -resize \$1 asound; #X obj 59 413 line~; #X obj 46 446 tabread4~ asound; #X obj 262 232 -; #X obj 262 204 t b f; #X obj 262 261 * 1000; #X obj 261 294 /; #X obj 166 191 t b b b; #X obj 95 236 f 1; #X obj 159 227 f 2; #X obj 245 321 f 1; #X obj 245 344 abs; #X obj 121 478 outlet~; #X obj 170 27 r hit; #X obj 618 83 inlet; #X obj 57 38 inlet; #X text 57 19 from; #X obj 116 38 inlet; #X obj 296 43 inlet; #X text 295 26 speed; #X obj 636 356 outlet; #X obj 70 329 pack 0 0; #X obj 203 100 counter 0 4; #X obj 170 53 t b b; #X obj 98 372 route 0 1 2 3 4; #X obj 156 414 line~; #X obj 157 444 tabread4~ asound; #X obj 266 416 line~; #X obj 267 446 tabread4~ asound; #X obj 377 416 line~; #X obj 378 446 tabread4~ asound; #X obj 491 415 line~; #X obj 492 449 tabread4~ asound; #X obj 159 338 pack 0 0 0; #X obj 753 265 tabwrite~ asound; #X text 112 15 duration; #X obj 103 134 +; #X obj 115 107 t b f; #X obj 111 168 clip 0 10; #X obj 732 27 adc~ 1; #X obj 613 278 f 0; #X obj 732 57 hip~ 10; #X obj 854 84 inlet; #X obj 856 116 sel 1 0; #X obj 874 186 timer; #X
Re: [PD] graph on parent problem?
If I understood your problem correctly, this might be because pd redraws array contents very inefficiently, so if you are constantly changing array contents that can prove quite cpu intensive. I don't think that is the problem - I'm not changing the array just load it once the play from it. [PD] graph on parent problem?
I have an array in a subpatch, when I applied graph-on-parent property to the subpatch (to view the array which holds sound so could be fairly large) Pd didn't like that. With dsp off it worked fine but when I turn dsp on Pd becames unusably slow to react (sliders, etc.). I was able to solve the problem by removing the graph-on-parent option. So it seems there is something in the interaction of graph-on-parent and the sound engine. this is on a planetCCRMA system: FC17 PD0.42-5extended Anyone else encounter such a problem? Re: [PD] audio breaking
thanks for the pointers. The setup of rt kernel is one of the main reasons I'm using planetCCRMA version (where nando manages to take care of these issues letting normal users access rt priorities). I am still baffled by the fact that I get synch errors from pd even when not doing any audio (no patch open. and these are not only the initial errors when launching pd). And also the fact that I can get good audio playback reliably from snd (soundeditor). Doesn't that suggest that the problem is not with jack/firewire but perhaps with pd? [PD] audio breaking
I'm encountering bad audio behvaiour with pd+jack. Pd is reporting DIO errors even without any patch open. When I open one of the simple example patches I get very frequent breaks in the audio sometime these are even at a regular rate (around 120 bpm). I'm using FC10 with jack and a firewire soundcard. I'm starting jack with: /usr/bin/jackd -R -t1 -dfirewire -r48000 -p256 -n3 -i2 -o6 (also tried p128 512). I can play soundfiles with no problems using snd so it seems the problem might involve some interaction between pd jack. [PD] different versions different sounds
I'm tryint to figure out why the same patch results in completely different sounds in two versions of Pd. It is part of a larger patch but I'm attaching the relevant section. I'm running this in: 1) Win latest Pd-ext-0.40.3 2) Linux latest release candidate. And I just get very different sounds (the best I can describe is that I get a more metallic sound in Win. ). I don't know if the difference is because of the different versions or different systems, and since I need to reboot my machine to compare these it's not easy to just try changing things semi randomly. [PD] June 1 performance in London
If you are in London next Monday this performance (where I'm doing the music using, mostly, Pd) may be of interest: Ukiyo [Moveable World] by dap-lab / dans sans joux A choreographic installation fusing dance, sound, design and digital projections Monday, June 1, 19:ooAntoni Artaud Building, Brunel University, West London (free admission) UKIYO explores the layers of perceptions in an audiovisual world that constantly shifts and fragments; the audience is invited to move in and aound the space which in its current version features five hanamichi (runways) and several movie screens. Dancers perform simultaneously with digital objects that are projected, and their sounds and voices are sampled and processed. the mapping lib is optimized to work with number from -1 to 1. do you still have error using this kind of number? It seems that not. Is it really a negative number, or is it more like 9.74915e-05 ? In the latter case, only the exponent is negative, which means 9.74915/10/10/10/10/10 = 0.974915, whereas with a plus sign like 1.2e+06 would mean 1.2*10*10*10*10*10*10 = 120. Re: [PD] variance from mapping library
and then changing 10 to 0 makes the result converge to -691.2. actually, afaik, [variance] doesn't have a bug by itself. The bug is in [mean_n], which displays similar behaviour in default mode. Yes that was my thought as well because the variance abstraction looks correct. The bug is because of algebraic assumptions that don't work with floats. With real numbers, a+b-a-b = 0, but with floats, a+b-a-b is only guaranteed to be a small number, that is, less than 2^24 times smaller than abs(a)+abs(b), or something like that. But 10*10 = 100, and if you divide that by 2^24 = 16777216, you get about 596, which is an upper bound for the amount of error: so, the error is surely between -596 and +596. I trust your math here but just notice that your example converges to -691. But if I understand you correctly 'filtering' the input data through [int] should make variance error free (we hope). thanks Oded ___ Pd-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
[PD] variance from mapping library
I'm not sure if it's a bug but: when using variance (from mapping library) - I get negative numbers. Re: [PD] pattern extraction/recognition
Hi, i'm looking for a way to make a patch that recognizes musical motifs from a flute player in real-time. The first problem is how accurate you expect the pattern recognition to be. I have a piece where I ask Pd to make binary descriminations on input from the flute player, in real time. It works fine. It is simple enough to get note information from fiddle~ and write that as a list or a table. The problem is that you won't get 100% of the flute notes (legato notes sometime don't trigger etc.) and the notes fiddle estimates are not always perfect. The next problem is how fast can pd process the list/table to identify pattern. That will depend on the length of the patterns (of course) but also the narrower the definition of what pd needs to look for the faster it can match (probably). To create a system that works for you, you will definately need to start with recordings before you have something to work with a player on. There is a fair ammount of research on music pattern recognition out there, though real-time is not a priority for most at this stage. Unless there is another version of [rgb2hsv] in the linrary as an object and not an abstraction? 2) This is just a stupid mac problem: When I look at the path settings in pd I only see a partial list (about 10 lines) how do I add another one, witout removing any of the existing paths? (when I tried replacing a existing entry that I don't use, and save the setting, it seems it only saved the first few entries visible on the screen and removed a dozen or so additional ones hidden from view). thanks Oded ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] another small gem problem
this might be the case: afaik [rgb2hsv] is also part of markEx (which used to be part of Gem but is no more; only the hsv-rgb functions have stayed as abstractions) do you have other markEx objects like [tripleLine]? Yes. that explains things thanks Oded ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] another small gem problem
which is ok, [hsv2rgb] is supposed to sit in the same directory as Gem.pd_darwin; ah i remember that [import] doesn't like that... Actually Gem.pd_darwin got installed in {..}/Resources/extra while the hsv2rgb.pd file was installed at: {..}/Resources/extra/Gem/ so they aren't in the same direcory. ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list

[PD] gem problem
hi, I am finding that gem is doing things very differently in two versions. The attached patch is slightly simplified from what I am running but the essence is running 3 versions of the same movie on 3 'screens' using [pix_threshold] and [pix_alpha] to selectively hide elements of the pictures at the front. This works fine when I use pd-extended0.38 When I try it with pd-extended0.39 (from http://at.or.at/hans/pd/installers.html ) it doesn't work. The pictures on the front 'screens' are all turned blueish but the selections aren't removed. I am running this on an intel Mac OSX10.4 I would be happy to stick with 0.38 but other things aren't working correctly with it, and I can't even run two versions in parallel because hans' version handles libraries internally, and gets confused when there is a preference file like the older version wants :( Any ideas? Re: [PD] gem problem
the color problem is a bug in the current gem version (I have the same problem). You can try to take the old gemversion you were using before and replace the buggy one. Is there a simple way to take Gem from the pd-extended instalation that where it works, and stick it in the Pd-extended instalation where it doesn't? I was looking through the directory where pd is intalled and couldn't find an obvious place (I'm very new to mac so I'm still struggling with where everything is and how to make changes. I looked for compiled versions of Gem and there aren't many for mac, and I can't even see which version of Gem is the one that's working because loading the old pd creates problems with new pd). the problem with demux is, that it is an abbreviation for demultiplex, and I don' think I am using demux in that patch. Re: [PD] gem problem
if you get wrong architecture that means you are using a gem that was compiled for another type of cpu. why don't you go to the page I posted earlier and chose a version that fits your computer. I also though so but when copied the Gem.pd_darwind from pd0.38-extended to pd0.39-extended I did get the wrong archiecture error. I think the 39 version was compiled slightly differenty (i doesn't use the normal preference file for example). So the problem isn't the powerPC vis. Intel (after all I can run the 0.38 version on the same computer). thanks Oded ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
[PD] object in which library?
Is there a list of which external library (e.g. zexy) contains which object? Since it seems I'll need to install pd-0.39 or 0.40 and pd-extended only manages 0.38. I tried installing a recent test build but got some wrong behaviour (with Gem), which means I'll have to try and install pd and than find which additional libraries I need. So is there a way to find which libraries contain which object I'm using? thanks -- ___ Oded Ben-Tal http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~oded [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list

Re: [PD] object in which library?
have a look at www.pdpedia.org. for example http://www.pdpedia.org/en/Category:zexy (the website is stil quite new) marius. Thanks. So I found that [fade~] is part of iemlib, but when I search pd site where I can download iemlib I can't find it. Searching iemlib lists various links to patches that (probably) require iemlib but not the library itself. (And I also just found that I'll have to compile Gem myself... I guess I was asking for trouble when I decided to experiment with MacOS and not stick with what I know.) ___ Oded Ben-Tal http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~oded [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list

Re: [PD] derivative?
DPCM is Differential pulse code modulation, and its possible to get an estimate of derivative with the right predictor. While the difference between the last two messages is an approximation of the derivative its is a really bad one so extrapulating on 4-points is much better. (dsp theory is really not my area but I'm sure some people will be able to explain much better about dpcm) What I'm looking for is a way to: (1) store the last 3 values in the series. (2) an estimate of the derivative should be x0 - 1/2 * x1 - 1/4 * x2 -1/4 * x3 (where x0 is the most recent element) (3) switch places so the x0-x1 x1-x2 x2-x3 ready to do it again. I'll try looking at list-abs (I think I tried poking around those on my office mac but pd-extended couldn't find them so I left it at that). thanks ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
[PD] playback noise with video
I am getting noise and disruption to audio stream when I am using gem's pix_movie object. The noise happens only when I 'run' the movie. most of the time its in 'freeze frame' mode with some movement of the graphic objects (translation, rotation) and that works fine with the audio. But when Gem needs to play the movie I get audio problems. I am running it on a brand new G5 mac with 4gb RAM, and dual processor, which I thought should be enough processing power to run smoothly. Any ideas about ways of reducing this problem? I am trying to use dufferent encoders for the quicktime movie and, I think, some are worse than others, but I don't know enough about the differences to make any inform decisions. Anyone knows more about how Gem handles movies? Is it possible to set the system priorities on OSX to give audio higher priority? [PD] midi on OSX
I need help with I-Cube controllers under OSX. I am not a regular MAC user so I somehow messed things a bit. I was able to install the I-Cube and using the editor to set the controllers to pass midi messages into pd. It all worked fine till yesterday. Coming into my office today I found out that I lost PD on my MAC - When I first installed it I didn't know I was supposed to copy the pd-extended thing to my application folder so I guess it was installed but floating somewhere. I must have removed the installed version yesterday by accident (probably when I was trying to sort out the loading of additional libraries). So I installed PD again and this time copied the app and the library loader to their correct places. The result is that PD doesn't get midi messages from the controller anymore. (In addition it seems the old mac can't handle all these extra libraries - it stopped responding a few times so I removed the full loader file. But that didn't solve the midi problem). I am using a G4 Mac OS X 10.4.9 Any suggestions how to locate the problem and fix it?
