[PD] concert in NY 15/4

2014-03-25 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
If you are in NY on April 15th my piece for Microtonal trumpet and electronics
(running Pd) will feature in Stephen Altoft's recital as part of the AMERICAN
FESTIVAL OF MICROTONAL MUSIC (AFMM), under the direction of Johnny Reinhard,
presents a four-night series at Spectrum, located at 121 Ludlow Street, second
floor, in Lower Manhattan. Admission is $20. at the door for each night; $15
for seniors and students.

Tuesday at 7 PM on April 15th spotlights the microtonal trumpet in recital
featuring European trumpeter Stephen Altoft in his own composition RASP, as
well as Oded Ben-Tal’s STILL LIFE, Elia Koussa’s UPWARDS IN TIME, Elizabeth
Adams’ IMMATERIAL, Donald Bousted’s YASSER DESCRIBES HIS POLEMIC (and adds
some footnotes), Cornelius Schwehr’s LE BONHEUR, Gordon Kampe’s YIHA,
Eleri Pound’s GNOSSIENNE, and Alexander Grebtschenko’s BYE-BYE. Mr. Altoft
has collected short works in 19-tone equal temperament named the “The Yasser
Collection” after the early 20th Century theorist and organist, Joseph Yasser.

Re: [PD] display image from google search?

2014-01-23 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
Many thanks I was finally able to get this to work (needed to install
python-simplejson). I think it is cool, but originally I was hoping to use the
search-by-image option. i.e. I upload an image and find visually similar image
online. The ideas is to, eventually, get an evolving series of images that are
associated with each other in some strange and unexpected ways. Does anyone
know if that would be possible?

Oh wise Pd users!
I am wondering if it is possible to so have Pd do search-by-image on google
and then display a selected image from the result (using Gem). Any ideas how to
accomplish that (or something similar. It doesn't have to be google search)
would be welcome

Hi All,

I will be performing a Pd-based audiovisual piece at the riverside studios
next week as part of the Tete-A-Tete festival.
http://www.tete-a-tete.org.uk/zaum-beyond-mind/

The piece Zaum: Beyond Mind explores notions of embodied musical performance
in relation to the digital nature of much of the sonic visual material, and
the changing relationship between different types of presence. Virtual
presence takes the form of 'un-desiring' bodies as voices-off, whilst
polarities between the animate and the inanimate are reversed in a 'play'
between performers and instruments.

Re: [PD] graph on parent problem?

2012-12-10 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

hi Hans,

I am attaching the patch. changing env~ parameter solved the problem. I
did, however, test what happens if the vumeter is in the top patch (rather
then inside the subpatch) and that doesn't create the same problem (i.e.
doing [env~] without giving it a large buffer size). So
there might be some additional issue with gop property there.

Re: [PD] graph on parent problem?

2012-12-08 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

If I understood your problem correctly, this might be because pd redraws array
contents very inefficiently, so if you are constantly changing array contents
that can
prove quite cpu intensive.

I don't think that is the problem - I'm not changing the array just load
it once the play from it.

[PD] graph on parent problem?

2012-12-07 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

I have an array in a subpatch, when I applied graph-on-parent property to
the subpatch (to view the array which holds sound so could be fairly
large) Pd didn't like that. With dsp off it worked fine but when I turn
dsp on Pd becames unusably slow to react (sliders, etc.). I was able to
solve the problem by removing the graph-on-parent option. So it seems
there is something in the interaction of graph-on-parent and the sound
engine.

this is on a planetCCRMA system: FC17 PD0.42-5extended
Anyone else encounter such a problem? Any solution (beside moving things
outside subpatches)?

Thanks

I recently upgraded to FC14. the first time I started pd SELinux didn't
like it (though I haven't noticed any operational problems yet).
This is the brief error message:

SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/pdextended from using the 'execstack'
accesses on a process.

*  Plugin allow_execstack (53.1 confidence) suggests

If you do not think /usr/bin/pdextended should need to map stack memory
that is both writable and executable.

Then you need to report a bug. This is a potentially dangerous access.

Re: [PD] audio breaking

2010-03-06 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
thanks for the pointers. The setup of rt kernel is one of the main reasons
I'm using planetCCRMA version (where nando manages to take care of these
issues letting normal users access rt priorities).
I am still baffled by the fact that I get synch errors from pd even when
not doing any audio (no patch open. and these are not only the initial
errors when launching pd). And also the fact that I can get
good audio playback reliably from snd (soundeditor). Doesn't that suggest
that the problem is not with jack/firewire but perhaps with pd?

[PD] audio breaking

2010-03-04 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
I'm encountering bad audio behvaiour with pd+jack. Pd is reporting DIO
errors even without any patch open. When I open one of the simple example
patches I get very frequent breaks in the audio sometime these are even at
a regular rate (around 120 bpm).

I'm using FC10 with jack and a firewire soundcard.
I'm starting jack with:
/usr/bin/jackd -R -t1 -dfirewire -r48000 -p256 -n3 -i2 -o6
(also tried p128 512).

I can play soundfiles with no problems using snd so it seems the problem
might involve some interaction between pd jack. I don't get this audio
problem when I'm using pd with a USB soundcard (without jack) on the same
machine.

Any ideas how to track the problem and (hopefully) fix it?

[PD] efficiency savings?

2010-01-30 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
I started putting together elements of a patch that I worked on separately
and I'm getting sound droopouts. It seems I'm simply asking Pd to do too
much for real-time processing. I started making the code more efficient by
removing number and gui objects that I used for debugging and used switch~
to shut off audio processing in windows when not used. Any other general
suggestions? Is there a method of finding out which parts of the patch are
most demanding?

thanks

[PD] different versions different sounds

2009-05-29 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
I'm tryint to figure out why the same patch results in completely
different sounds in two versions of Pd. It is part of a larger patch but
I'm attaching the relevant section.

I'm running this in:
1) Win latest Pd-ext-0.40.3
2) Linux latest release candidate.
And I just get very different sounds (the best I can describe is that I
get a more metallic sound in Win. ).
I don't know if the difference is because of the different versions or
different systems, and since I need to reboot my machine to
compare these it's not easy to just try changing things semi randomly. Any
ideas for plausible reasons (and ways to get the latest version sounding
like the earlier one?)

thanks

2009-05-28 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
I am guessing that you have a preferences file in ~/.pdsettings that doesn't
load 'libdir' first. Are those libraries in /usr/local/lib/pd/extra?

So I could change the first lib to:
loadlib1: libdir

but am I correct in suspecting that would render pd-0.39 disfunctional?
I don't presume the problem with opening the audio is linked to this
problem which is why I'm keen to have the earlier PD functioning untill I
manage to fix that.

Here's the FAQ on that problem:

[PD] June 1 performance in London

If you are in London next Monday this performance (where I'm doing
the music using, mostly, Pd) may be of interest:

UKIYO explores the layers of perceptions in an audiovisual world that
constantly shifts and fragments; the audience is invited to move in and
aound the space which in its current version features five hanamichi
(runways) and several movie screens. Dancers perform simultaneously with
digital objects that are projected, and their sounds and voices are
sampled and processed. The music and visual choreography for Ukiyo are
designed for real-time gestural interaction to animate the feedback

[PD] compiling question

2009-04-07 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

This is a rather silly question but I'm stumped.
I'm trying to compile pd-vanilla but am stuck at step one:
./configure --prefix /home/oded/pdvanilla
I get error ./configure no such file
I'm in the pd/src directory (which should be the correct one). I'm running
linux FC10 (ccrma). There is a configure.in file but no .configure file.
I downloaded the code from svn last week (pd-extended. I'm trying to
compile vanilla first before I decide if I want to try further).

I know there is something basic I'm missing.

Re: [PD] variance from mapping library

2009-03-23 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

the mapping lib is optimized to work with number from -1 to 1.
do you still have error using this kind of number?

It seems that not.
I do get negative numbers even with input of ~200 (no need to get to
10) and once it gets into negative territory it settles into negative
numbers whenever the input is constant (i.e. 0 variance).

should the output of:

[sigmund~ env]

be the same (or very similar) to the output of

I think there is a typo in the help file (where env == notes). but I
get pretty wild output from sigmund that bears no relation (that I can
hear) to the input sound envelope.

I'm using pd-extended 0.40.3

Re: [PD] variance from mapping library

2009-03-19 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

Is it really a negative number, or is it more like 9.74915e-05 ? In the
latter case, only the exponent is negative, which means
9.74915/10/10/10/10/10 = 0.974915, whereas with a plus sign like 1.2e+06
would mean 1.2*10*10*10*10*10*10 = 120.

I am getting a negative number occasionally.

Re: [PD] variance from mapping library

2009-03-19 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

and then changing 10 to 0 makes the result converge to -691.2.

actually, afaik, [variance] doesn't have a bug by itself. The bug is in
[mean_n], which displays similar behaviour in default mode.

Yes that was my thought as well because the variance abstraction looks
correct.

The bug is because of algebraic assumptions that don't work with floats. With
real numbers, a+b-a-b = 0, but with floats, a+b-a-b is only guaranteed to be
a small number, that is, less than 2^24 times smaller than abs(a)+abs(b),
or something like that. But 10*10 = 100, and if you divide
that by 2^24 = 16777216, you get about 596, which is an upper bound for the
amount of error: so, the error is surely between -596 and +596.

I trust your math here but just notice that your example converges to
-691. But if I understand you correctly 'filtering' the input data through
[int] should make variance error free (we hope).

[PD] variance from mapping library

2009-03-18 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

I'm not sure if it's a bug but:
when using variance (from mapping library) - I get negative numbers. Since
variance is supposed to be always positive and I don't see anything wrong in the way
the abstraction is done, I presume there is something I'm missing.
My impression is that small changes in the input translate to negative
'variance'

Re: [PD] OSCx linux install

2009-01-05 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

You should use OSC objects from mrpeach library in any case and
(hopefully) you should be able to compile mrpeach library.

I wanted to add OSCx to my pd Vanilla on Fedora10.  I used the OSCx folder from
the
pd-externals tarball on sourceforge.  I followed instructions in the readme,
except
there is no rule to make install.

It built a libOSC.a, but I can't seem to figure out where to put the lib or any
other
needed files.

For pd I used the GNU/Linux(source) Vanilla 0.41.4 on Fedora10.  ./configure,
make,
install
and installed to /usr/local.

from command line: $ pd
works fine.

I tried placing OSC files in /usr/local/lib/pd/extras, but no joy.  Without the
install, I'm not sure where the files belong.

Also I know there's a CCRMA rpm for f10, but prefer my own install at the
moment.

Re: [PD] pd + pulseaudio/alsa plug-in crashes hard

2008-12-27 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
To add additional, freely named ALSA PCMs to Pd's device dropdown list
use the -alsaadd command line option. For example say you have a
custom PCM defined in your .asoundrc like this:

hi,
I have a pcm.quattro device defined in .asoundrc which bind 2 stereo
devices to allow quad sound. And I can even get it to work(*). But:

When I try to add it to pd it is only listed in the input devices:
$ pd -alsa -alsaadd quattro -listdev

input devices:
1. USB Audio Quattro (hardware)
2. USB Audio Quattro (plug-in)
3. HDA Intel (hardware)
4. HDA Intel (plug-in)
5. quattro
output devices:
1. USB Audio Quattro (hardware)
2. USB Audio Quattro (plug-in)
3. HDA Intel (hardware)
4. HDA Intel (plug-in)
5.

When I try to actually use it it fails with:
output snd_pcm_delay failed: Input/output error
astate 0
audio I/O stuck... closing audio

SImilarly when I try with:
-audioin 3 audioout 5

Somehow pd doesn't like it, any ideas why?

thanks
Oded

(*) I am able to use the quattro device to play quad sound with clm/snd.
No problems there. Sound playback is with sndplay and by setting
MUS_ALSA_DEVICE=quattro it works.

some of the libraries I'm using (e.g. zexy). While it compiled fine when I run

invalid command name .x1e036d0.m.windows

Strangely enough I do get sound when I test.
But if I quit and launch again it doesn't start. The process is there and
I can't kill it (kill kill -9 killall pd as superuser) nothing seems to
work.
I'm using FC8 x86_64 ccrma.rt kernel 2.6.26.7-1.rt11.1.fc8.ccrmart

[PD] osc on winXP

I'm not sure it's a bug or I'm missing something. I am having problems
with oscx objects (Pd version 0.40.3-extended-20080721):
I can create [sendOSC] but not [dumpOSC] If I open the helpfile for
dumpOSC it usually (but not always!) displays fine but if I try copy/paste
to another patch it doesn't work. I tried adding [import]] [declare] to
no avail (closing and opening the file as well as restarting pd in
between).
I also tried adding oscx to the path but that doesn't stick. I managed to
add other directories to the load path and next time I start pd they are
there. not when I tried oscx. And the dll files are there in the correct

2008-07-24 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
Pd comes crushing down with a Seg fault everytime I close the gem window
(sending destroy message after I stop the rendering).
I'm running Pd0.39.3-extended-rc5
Gem 0.91-cvs
On Linux FC8 (planetCCRMA packages).
I tried to see if the simplest Gem examples seg fault on exit and they do.

Re: [PD] multiple sound cards

2008-04-28 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
configuring multiple sound cards in linux will depend somewhat on which
version you're using.
Here is some basic info for FC5 (as an example):

ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/node5.html#SECTION00050800

My (meager) experience was that there might be issues with the order the
cards are defined. My FC8 works fine as long as the USB card is the first
(snd-card-0).

Re: [PD] pattern extraction/recognition

2008-04-27 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

Hi, i'm looking for a way to make a patch that recognizes musical motifs
from a flute player in real-time.

The first problem is how accurate you expect the pattern recognition to
be. I have a piece where I ask Pd to make binary descriminations on input
from the flute player, in real time. It works fine.
It is simple enough to get note information from fiddle~ and write that as
a list or a table. The problem is that you won't get 100% of the flute
notes (legato notes sometime don't trigger etc.) and the notes fiddle
estimates are not always perfect.
The next problem is how fast can pd process the list/table to identify
pattern. That will depend on the length of the patterns (of course) but
also the narrower the definition of what pd needs to look for the faster
it can match (probably).
To create a system that works for you, you will definately need to start
with recordings before you have something to work with a player on.

There is a fair ammount of research on music pattern recognition out
there, though real-time is not a priority for most at this stage.

Re: [PD] GEM- simple img texturing into a circle

2008-03-25 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
Hello all, I am trying to do something which should be fairly easy: I am
trying to see a circle that let's through an image that is behind it. (As if
 through a telescope...)

Why not render the picture on a square/rectangle, and put a 'hole' in
front of it (for instance a cylinder: make it very wide, thick, and
short. rotate 90 degrees so we are looking 'throught' it). moving the
picture your 'hole' in coordinated fashion back and forth could create a
telescope like effect, no?

[PD] Pd performance practice

2008-03-04 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
Dear all,
A while ago I was trying to find 'good houskeeping tips' for using Pd in
performance and couldn't find any (what to avoid, how to organize patches,
etc.).
does anyone know of something like this? If not where would be a good
place to put such a resource? I presume that the collective (good as well
as bad) experience could provide a useful resource for starting to use Pd
in performance.

Re: [PD] another small gem problem

2007-10-10 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
these are now abstractions, you have to add the path were the Gem.pd_darwin
 lives to pd's search paths.

 the path is usually path-to-pd/extra/Gem/

Two quesion than:
1) as far as I could tell [rgb2hsv] and [rgb2yuv] exist in the same
directory. and while gem finds the former it doesn't find the latter.
Unless there is another version of [rgb2hsv] in the linrary as an object
and not an abstraction?

2) This is just a stupid mac problem: When I look at the path settings in
pd I only see a partial list (about 10 lines) how do I add another one,
witout removing any of the existing paths? (when I tried replacing a
existing entry that I don't use, and save the setting, it seems it only
saved the first few entries visible on the screen and removed a dozen or
so additional ones hidden from view).

so they aren't in the same direcory.

[PD] gem problem

2007-10-08 Thread Oded Ben-Tal

hi,

I am finding that gem is doing things very differently in two versions. The
attached patch is slightly simplified from what I am running but the essence
is running 3 versions of the same movie on 3 'screens' using [pix_threshold]
and [pix_alpha] to selectively hide elements of the pictures at the front.
This works fine when I use pd-extended0.38 When I try it with
pd-extended0.39 (from http://at.or.at/hans/pd/installers.html ) it doesn't
work. The pictures on the front 'screens' are all turned blueish but the
selections aren't removed.

I am running this on an intel Mac OSX10.4
I would be happy to stick with 0.38 but other things aren't working correctly
with it, and I can't even run two versions in parallel because hans' version
handles libraries internally, and gets confused when there is a preference
file like the older version wants :(

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: [PD] gem problem

2007-10-08 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
the color problem is a bug in the current gem version (I have the same
problem). You can try to take the old gemversion you were using before and
 replace the buggy one.

Is there a simple way to take Gem from the pd-extended instalation that
where it works, and stick it in the Pd-extended instalation where it
doesn't? I was looking through the directory where pd is intalled and
couldn't find an obvious place
(I'm very new to mac so I'm still struggling with where
everything is and how to make changes. I looked for compiled versions of
Gem and there aren't many for mac, and I can't even see which version of
Gem is the one that's working because loading the old pd creates problems
with new pd).

the problem with demux is, that it is an abbreviation for demultiplex, and

I don' think I am using demux in that patch.

Re: [PD] gem problem

if you get wrong architecture that means you are using a gem that was
compiled for another type of cpu.
why don't you go to the page I posted earlier and chose a version that fits
 your computer.

I also though so but when copied the Gem.pd_darwind from pd0.38-extended
to pd0.39-extended I did get the wrong archiecture error. I think the 39
version was compiled slightly differenty (i doesn't use the normal
preference file for example). So the problem isn't the powerPC vis. Intel
(after all I can run the 0.38 version on the same computer).

[PD] object in which library?

Re: [PD] derivative?

2007-09-04 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
DPCM is Differential pulse code modulation, and its possible to get an
estimate of derivative with the right predictor. While the difference
between the last two messages is an approximation of the derivative its is
a really bad one so extrapulating on 4-points is much better. (dsp theory
is really not my area but I'm sure some people will be able to explain
much better about dpcm)
What I'm looking for is a way to:
(1) store the last 3 values in the series.
(2) an estimate of the derivative should be
  x0 - 1/2 * x1 - 1/4 * x2 -1/4 * x3 (where x0 is the most recent element)
(3) switch places so the x0-x1 x1-x2 x2-x3 ready to do it again.

I'll try looking at list-abs (I think I tried poking around those on my
office mac but pd-extended couldn't find them so I left it at that).

[PD] playback noise with video

2007-08-31 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
I am getting noise and disruption to audio stream when I am using gem's
pix_movie object. The noise happens only when I 'run' the movie. most of
the time its in 'freeze frame' mode with some movement of the graphic
objects (translation, rotation) and that works fine with the audio. But
when Gem needs to play the movie I get audio problems.

I am running it on a brand new G5 mac with 4gb RAM, and dual processor,
which I thought should be enough processing power to run smoothly.

Any ideas about ways of reducing this problem? I am trying to use
dufferent encoders for the quicktime movie and, I think, some are worse
than others, but I don't know enough about the differences to make any
inform decisions. Anyone knows more about how Gem handles movies?
Is it possible to set the system priorities on OSX to give audio higher
priority?
Any other ideas?

[PD] midi on OSX

2007-06-01 Thread Oded Ben-Tal
I need help with I-Cube controllers under OSX. I am not a regular MAC user so
I somehow messed things a bit. I was able to install the I-Cube and using the
editor to set the controllers to pass midi messages into pd. It all worked
fine till yesterday.
Coming into my office today I found out that I lost PD on my MAC - When I
first installed it I didn't know I was supposed to copy the pd-extended thing
to my application folder so I guess it was installed but floating somewhere. I
must have removed the installed version yesterday by accident (probably when I
was trying to sort out the loading of additional libraries). So I installed PD
again and this time copied the app and the library loader to their correct
places.
The result is that PD doesn't get midi messages from the controller anymore.
(In addition it seems the old mac can't handle all these extra libraries - it
stopped responding a few times so I removed the full loader file. But that
didn't solve the midi problem).
I am using a G4 Mac OS X 10.4.9
Any suggestions how to locate the problem and fix it?
