Simular to what Bill suggested, take the camera, a flash, and no lens into a dark room. Set it to 1/125, open the back, and fire at the wall, and if it's working right you should see a full 35mm frame when the flash fires. If it's too quick close your eyes and you should see the image burned int

I would definitely reccommend  taking a 300mm f4.5 if you can, along with a teleconvertor for the animal shots. For Denali you can get a lot with a 70 - 210mm zoom. A 20mm or so wide angle is also very useful. If you don't take a long lens to Katmai you'll miss a lot. You don't need any more
