Hi,
Has anyone managed to used the 500FTZ in manual mode with a K10D ?
Here's the problem i'm facing..
1. If I leave the flash in ttl mode than is simply puts out full power
flash bursts as expected since it does not support P-TTL. So far so
good.
2. When i put the flash in Manual mode (press
Probably Aperture Priority, Since it is my most frequently used mode.

Patrick, let me humbly suggest that you take it to fully manual (M)
mode and try again. It seems to me that any (semi)automatic mode
forces P-TTL automatics to engage.

Thank you for the tip ... It just did not cross my mind to try that...
I do 90% of my shooting in Aperture priority mode but metered manual
will do fine.

I think one major drawback of the 500FTZ is it has no autocomputer possibility.
I may rememnber wrong but in my memry you either work TTL or full manual :(
One of the reason (having bodies not supporting TTL at that time) that
I went for Metz 40MZ2, years ago.

K10D (as K100d) do
Thanks to all who replied.
No - the Af500FTZ does not have an auto function (the old-fashioned
sensor in flash auto function.)
I have the AF 360FGT but it's been my main macro fash and has endured a
good degree of knocking around, and does not have a tilt and swivel head
(only a tilt head.)
I looked in the manual and it seems to only reference the newer FGZ
flashes. Is the K10D compatible with the older TTL flashes, the like
AF500 FTZ? Has anyone tried out this combo?
Thanks -
MCC

I have.
The flash fires, but massive overexposure. :-(

I did just now.
Pentax K10D, FA 50mm f1.4,
All all EIs? On the *istD at EI 400 I get typically usable exposures
with a 500FTZ if the flash distance is over about 6 feet ... especially
if shooting RAW. But there was no consistency at EI 200 or EI 800.
So, I mostly dial down the 500FTZ to a manual setting that works for
the distance
K10D (as K100d) do NOT supprt plain TTL. This was known and announced.
The only way to use a TTL flash is to go either manual or autp-computer.
No other way :(

Thanks - that seems to be the case. I have an AF360FGZ so it looks like
I'll be using that.

As far as I know, the K10D won't do TTL, so you have to use the flash
in auto flash mode. I've used my AF400T with the K10D in autoflash
mode, and it worked well.

Does the AF-500 have an autoflash function? If so, it should work
relatively well. Of course you can use the guide number as well, but
full power isn't nice if you don't bounce it off of something.

Manual flash is quite easy on digital as well.
