Way too late for doing that. Any year between 1980 and 2000 could have been
a good year for launching a good high-end SLR, supported

Niche markets usually allow higher gain per item, hence can be profitable,

A smaller company than Pentax will fit better. For Pentax, a niche market
can only complement their main business. Now they are trying to re-build
their main business, and all of their resources

Could very well be. My source and I were discussing it from a enthusiast point of view
and it may be that an entry level DSLR doesn't qualify as an enthusiast product.

This discussion would be much more interesting if Pentax was able to
produce and ship its existing higher-end products, like the DA 16-45 and
the FA 77. There are backordered to east Asia with no availability in sight.
Is this just more of Pentax's marketing ineptitude? Is the company
those places where film will still dominate are ones that can't afford a
high end SLR.

Not necessarily, I think the D70 is not a dumbed down D100 - it is
actually better in many respects.
In many respects, yes. It HAD to be a better camera than the 300D since
the 300D had about a 6-month head start. However it has a couple of
300D-isms that make it hard to use for me, probably
