A vote for the first one too! The longer vertical lends to the feel
of the trees...or something like that. Taking photos of trees/forest
can succumb to the can't see the forest because of the trees adage,
this one is very well done.

For me, the second square crop is more appealing. In the portrait mode, the

That is a pretty nice shot you have there. These types are always
very difficult when there is sun peaking through - the contrast range
is almost impossible to deal with. I like the overall look of this
one. It really gives you a feel of the trees and stream. Good
framing, too.
