Thanks, everyone, for suggestions and condolences.
Nothing worked. It's locked up, on and off camera. I fiddled with the AF/MF
switch, cleaned contacts, mounted and dismounted it.
I head home Sunday, then it goes to Pentax.

Check to see if the manual and autofocus switch is in between settings.
What you describe is what happens when the switch is off the mark.

My just received DA* 50-135 did the same thing the second time I used
it. Unmounting it and remounting it fixed it for a time, but I've had
to do it several times in the past week. Not too cool for a just out
of the box lens! It's also strange that when in that mode, the lens
will not turn

Joe, I can only offer my condolences and tell you that I can easily
relate to your sense of frustration.
I should also say that DA* lenses should be fault-free within limits of
good sense and good reason.
The main question here is whether other brands suffer the same kind of
illness... Hard
The clamp on my 10 month old DA F 50 F2.8 macro does not always engage.
It went in to be adjusted for my K10D back focus, and i forgot to have
them look at it.
Not sure i will, but, a lot of stuff seems to have to go back. I guess
the consumer IS quality control.
