 A little thumper.

I've got 5 bikes in the garage. Four of them are single-cylinder bikes.

No suggestions about the photo, but for the screws on the carb, a
dremel tool can cut a slot for a flatblade screwdriver if you strip
the screw heads. Once you get them out, replace them with allen-head
 stainless steel screws.

You can use a single strand from a piece of stranded copper wire to
clean out the clogged jets in the carburetor.

If I understand it there are three things:

1. If you are doing work to sell, you may *only* sell it through the
Apple iBooks store and Apple takes a substantial cut.

2. Apple gets to decide what books get sold through the iBooks store. If
they don't select your work to be sold through the iBook store, you are
not allowed to sell it elsewhere.

3. Apple tried to hide that 'gator in the swampland section of the EULA.

Fun with 100mm

2012-01-23 Thread Tim Bray
So, here's how to have some fun at a social gathering or business
meeting. Take your K-5 along, (or some other camera, if there is one,
that combines unobtrusiveness, image stabilization, and is happy up to
ISO3200). Mount a 100mm prime on it, e.g. the D-FA 100mm or the fancy
new WR; once again, small and unobtrusive win. Sit at a table with
friends and colleagues and take pictures of them as they speak,
gesture, and listen. I think being with people who know you and are
used to you snapping pix all the time is an important component. Then
post the pictures privately on the web and email the gallery to
everyone who was in the room. Unless you're unlucky, you'll get a
high proportion of razor-sharp, compelling, images, and heartfelt
thanks from the photos' subjects.

Can't share these because they're at internal Google gatherings, but I
really do recommend this. -Tim

Re: All you WORK are belong to us! (Apple)

2012-01-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I don't know that they tried to hide it. That's reading a lot of
inflammatory brouhaha into the situation. I read EULAs every time I
consider using software for actual 'for pay' production, and I saw
these terms and conditions immediately. If you choose to do business
without reading the terms and conditions of use of software you use
for the process, you will eventually get burned.

Another way to say what this EULA means—and remember that I am not a
lawyer and can only speak for myself:

The iBooks Author software is a tool to create Works (by Apple's
definition of the term) to be distributed free of charge or
marketed/sold through the iBookstore. If you intend to use it for the
latter purpose, Apple owns the exclusive rights to authorize and
distribute the Works you submit for sale.

The converse complement is that if you want to produce a Work and have
full control to distribute it as you please—for free or for pay, on
your website or through a publisher, or even through the
iBookstore—the iBooks Author software is the wrong tool to choose for
that purpose.

So why use the iBooks Author software? Because it offers specific
features that you might want to take advantage of which other software
does not, and because Apple will provide product testing, curating,
distribution, marketing, and payment collection services—for which
they obtain a fee per copy sold—if you choose to sell the Work.

It's a business decision akin to signing a book contract with a
publisher on an exclusive basis, with the added bonus in that if you
don't want to sell your work, you can distribute it freely without
Apple's involvement at all, and you can transform it into a more
industry generic form and still sell it any other way you wish.

That's what I understand this EULA to be saying. I could easily be
wrong, but if this is the case I don't see what all the brouhaha is
all about. Other than that everyone really wants to use the software
and are pissed off that they can't use it and do whatever else they
please with it. ;-)

Re: Eagles on the Mississippi

2012-01-23 Thread kwaller
We were told at one of the eagle days presentations (back in the late 80's)
that the colder the winter along the rivers, the farther south the eagles
would go, seeking open water, so they could get at the fish.
They especially like to congregate around lock dams due to the stun effect
on the fish after they came over the dam.
I remember seeing eagles hopping along the ice on the down side of the dams
picking up the stunned fish.

There are more eagles at the Lock Dam alongside the Rock Island Arsenal.
We watched a podcast of eaglets from Decora Iowa last spring, a bit
farther north.
And I've seen many along the rivers in southern Minnesota.
They are a treat.

Re: All you WORK are belong to us! (Apple)

2012-01-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
If you create a Work that has no specific components supplied by iBook
Author ... none of the iBook Author widgets or features, DRM, etc ...
then it is indistinguishable from content created by any other tools.
So if you create an iBook file and then render it to Plain Text, the
EULA's restrictions on what you can do with it are no longer
applicable because there's no way to prove that iBook Author created
it, nor is there any value in it that any other plain text editor
could not have created.

Dress it up with Word and sell it to whomever will buy it.

people to enjoy retro. I dislike retro, personally. Retro
implies styling things to make appear a particular way for the sake of
selling them on the fantasy of those looks. I dislike things that are
false this way.

I love cameras that work. Many older cameras are dear to me simply
because they work very well. Build me a camera that works well and
I'm all for it.

Olympus has produced many excellent cameras. I hope this one proves to

Not really so sad. It's just a convenient place for locals to make
graffiti without really damaging anything. It is on the edge of the
woods on a very popular beach.

Re: No discussion of the Olympus OM-D ?

2012-01-23 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
An exciting new camera is of more than passing interest to this group because
(and this is just my unscientific opinion) many here are photographers first,
Pentaxians second. That is evidenced by the fact that so many own other brands
along with their Pentaxes; some have even discarded their Pentaxes ~in toto~
and remain on the list for reasons other than their loyalty to the brand.

You of all people, Godfrey, who look beyond Pentax to satisfy your photographic
needs, will understand that.

If there's one thing that I've always liked about this list it's the love/hate
relationship that so many seem to have with Pentax. No blindly spewing the
company line, no my camera maker right or wrong, it's more like, here's what
I want and if you don't make it I'll still love you but I will go elsewhere.

There are very few measurebaters compared to other places; we're just people
who like taking pictures, on whatever equipment is out there that suits our
needs.

That, I suppose, is why the latest Oly is of more than passing interest.

Cheers,
frank

I don't know why speculation about an Olympus camera would be of more
than just passing interest for the Pentax community, however.

GESO 2012 - USS Hornet - GDG

2012-01-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I took the M9 up to Alameda for a photo walk at the USS Hornet on Sunday. It
was really the wrong camera for the task, but I wanted to get to know it better
and push myself a bit.

Quickie output ... thirty five photos in this set:

Hope you enjoy!

You seem to have overcome the shortcomings of your tools. There are some
nice photos in that set.
