PESO Thank God For Ducks Day

2012-11-25 Thread Larry Colen
I was invited to a very fun annual gathering yesterday, which started with a
group of friends who couldn't find a turkey on the day after thanksgiving, so
they bought duck for their dinner.

The 5-15 is very nice at 5-12 mm. at 15 mm it's not so good, no bad.

Ebay also has lots of converters like a C-mount en K adapters. I need
to make up my mind if I get the original K adapter with build in
shutter or the new 15-45mm. Most likely I want the 15-45. A 50mm on a
K adapter feels very large and no AF.

Indeed, most lenses usable with a tripod only ...

Played a little with a 100mm macro on the Q. It's fun but very
frustrating feels like hand holding a microscope.

:-)

I have been using it with the DA 35mm macro, that is hand-holdable with
sufficuent light.
(close to 180mm, equivalent)

Subject: GESO: Canal Ride

We just spent a couple of days in the little town of Tekapo where my wife was
doing some work. I went along for a holiday, and took my road bike so I could
ride the canal road between the Tekapo A and Tekapo B power stations (about
60km return). These stations are located at lakes Tekapo and Pukaki
respectively, with the canal linking the two lakes.

The canal road is privately owned by the power company but is open to the
public as a scenic route. It's split into two sections - it intersects with
the highway about halfway along to form a figure-8. It turns out the first
section was closed for repairs so I had to ride on the highway for a while to
get to the intersection.

I stopped in a few places to take photos with the cellphone. The pics don't
capture the full extent of the scenery but they're better than nothing...

http://www.multi.net.nz/canal-ride/

I'd rate that as one of the best rides I've ever done even despite the lack of
hills.

I'll post some photos from Tekapo later.

Cheers,
Dave

A rather poignant story. Glad you got that last photo of the church (thanks to
your bike!).

I agree with the stuff in the spokes thing. Bike messengers around here love
it, commemorating and/or protesting all manner of event and situation with
laminated spoke cards.

I had one once, commemorating one of the few messenger races I did. I could
hear it vibrating as I rode. I figured that the noise was wind resistance and I
have so little energy to spare I can't waste it on a silly card.

Besides, they look dopey.

Nice bike! Sturdy, simple, great urban tank. Several messengers here use them
and they last forever.

Thanks for sharing!

Subject: PESO: The Kona (for Frank)

Turns out I've shown this before at some stage, but I've added a cropped
version to show the bike a bit closer.

http://www.multi.net.nz/paddy-wagon/

That little silver thing in the rear wheel is actually part of the planter box
behind. I don't buy into the fashion of putting stuff in my spokes :) And the
positioning of Jesus was not deliberate.

The photo has a bit of a story so allow me to waffle...

On September 3rd 2010 I bought a shiny new carbon road bike. That was a Friday
and I'd taken the Kona into work, so I had to ride one bike home and pick the
other up on the Saturday.

The weather was a bit crappy and I thought about leaving the new bike behind so
it wouldn't get wet. But I was so keen to ride the new bike the next morning
that I just HAD to ride that one home. So I left the Kona in the locked
under-stairs cupboard.

Sure enough, at 4:35 the following morning Sod's Law came to fruition once
again and my plans fell apart. The earthquake hit making a ride out of the
question, and the CBD was shut down so I couldn't go and pick up the Kona.

It was about a week before the cordon was lifted and I was able to go and
retrieve the bike. I walked it straight to Cathedral Square and took this
photo of it.

Little did I know that the Cathedral would be in ruins just a few months
later...

Cheers,
Dave

On Nov 22, 2012, at 4:34 PM, Mark Cassino pdml-m...@charter.net wrote:

Congrats on getting the Q - it is a ton of fun and kicks out pretty decent
 images as well.

I bought a used Q Kit that had the standard prime, standard zoom, fisheye and
toy telephoto. I added a K to Q converter right off the bat.

The 5-15mm zoom has been my most used lens with the standard prime close
behind. Both of those lenses just feel great and perform very well. For the
type of shooting that I use the Q for the standard zoom is perfect.

I was captivated by the fisheye but had iffy results manually focusing with
it. When focused propertly (and I kept my fingers out of the field of view)
it was great. I installed the new firmware a few weeks ago and focus peaking
is a huge boon to me wrt to using this lens. I expect I'll use it a lot in
the future and my problems focusing it will be greatly diminished.

The lens that has seen virtually no use is the toy telephoto. I've tried it a
few times and it works well. IMO it really should not be called a toy lens
as that invokes lomography / holga etc (at least to me) and it is a
straightforward good performing lens. It just lacks aperture control and
autofocus and is not as nicely constructed as the standard lenses.

The K to Q adapter is an excellent tool. I've been playing around with an M
50 f1.7 as my working telephoto, and with the updated firmware and image
stabilization and focus peaking it works fine. The M 50 / adapter / Q is not
 at all awkward to me.

 I did several test shots with the Q and A* 200 f4 macro, D-FA 100mm and other
K mount lenses. It worked well and is not terribly difficult to use. For
macro the Q's DOF is great. My tests are here:

 http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/testing-the-pentax-q-and-k-mount-lenses

I am eagerly awaiting using K mount macro prime with focus peaking - just
haven't gotten out to do any work with it. I'll be adding the telephoto zoom
to my kit soon as well, since with the normal zoom it would be a great travel
 kit.

I will also probably opt for the Pentax K to Q adapter with built in leaf
shutter to be able to better use flash.

 Have fun!

5-15 mm zoom but for telephoto I'm torn between the upcoming long zoom and
using K mount lenses via a Q to K adapter. The lack of autofocus with the
latter option is a concern, my eyesight not being what it was.

I'm certainly interested to any experiences that Q owners might care to
 share.

As an aside, at it's current price point it seems to be selling like hot
cakes - at least in Japan:

I cam across these by accident yesterday.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/cycleologist/sets/72157607766753951/with/2915281383/

Apart from having a few good shots in them, they bring back some intensely
personal memories. About 25 years ago, I was the site services manager at the
plant. The first 6 shots are my old air compressor house and I was
responsible for the sign in shot 5.

Half way down the second page are photos of my power station and the
generators that I lovingly maintained and operated, all now derelict, yet
 somehow beautiful.

It's a tale of how some of the old economy in the UK (and elsewhere) has
decayed and gone away over the years. For this factory the demise of coal
mining in the UK in the wary 80s resulted in the loss of demand for almost
all of the market for the explosives produced here.

With normal pano's the camera/lens is rotated in its optical nodal

If you don't have a tripod a simple string is the solution. Connect it
to the camera on one end and create a sling on the other end. Put your
foot in the sling and pull the string tight. If you use a spirit level
like the ones which fit in the hotshoe your camera is always at he
 same height and level.

I used the 40mm pancake lens. Settings were 1/100 sec at f11, ISO 80. I
started snapping at 5:03p and finished up almost 5:05p, Florida time, so I
 had some nice afternoon light.

My first shot was the frame with the tree in it, and I worked to the right,
moving the camera horizontally, and overlapping each frame about 50%. I
read somewhere that's what you're supposed to do. As best I could, when I
moved to the right, I eyed a linear path to follow when moving down the
street to take the frames. I also made note of camera position and height
and tried to repeat that from muscle memory as it were. These frame were
handheld since I wasn't traveling with a tripod.

After I was finished with the 5 shots of the art work, I decided to take the
cafe on the left. I took 3 pictures there, trying to get a good expression
and placement of the women working in the cafe. I really didn't have high
hopes for that shot, since I snapped it out of sequence and didn't feel
confident that I was close to the linear line I had followed for the 5
frames, but I got a little lucky there.

When I tried to stitch these 6 frames in Photoshop, the interface made my
black pickup on the far right into a convertible--yep, hood completely
disappeared, and the back tire in the foreground had a chunk missing--as if
some animal had taken a bite out of it. So I decided on this 3 frame crop,
which I did in Lightroom after importing the complete 6 frame pano at full
 size into Lightroom.

Actually, Toine, I have a question for you: a while back didn't you share a
string method for aligning the camera when doing panos? I had saved that
but I can't find it now. You wouldn't happen to have that information handy?
Willing to share again? Please! :-)

And to Dave Mann: I went to PTGui, and watched one of their tutorial
videos, which was excellent. It helped me understand the process really
well. If I start doing panos regularly, I just may purchase the software.
So thanks for the heads up.

And thanks to Rob, Paul, Jack and Dave B.!

Re: PESO - Tram and Castle

Thanks, Christine!  It is beautiful.  Good beer, too!

I agree about the composition.  I wanted to get a tram moving against the
background of the castle, and some pedestrians.  Blurring the trolley required
a 1/10 sec shutter speed, so I had to discard some shots because of my
contributions to motion blur.  Trams weren't that frequent, and I didn't want
to overstrain my wife's (remarkable) patience.  So it goes!

Cheers,

Re: GESO: Canal Ride

2012-11-25 Thread David Mann
On Nov 26, 2012, at 4:16 AM, knarftheria...@gmail.com wrote:

I looked at the photos before I read the text. As I looked at them I thought,
 Nice ride, no hills.

I did think about going up the Mt John access road... would have been a
punishing climb but it looked like the descent would have been scary bordering
on dangerous.

I'm glad I got to ride the canals... the first canal section was closed for
repairs and the weather wasn't looking good early in the morning, so I thought
I may have to use my backup plan. That was to spend 2 hours doing laps along
the side road that goes to Lake Alexandrina, so if the weather did go bad I
wouldn't be too far out. But the dark clouds dissipated and it warmed up a
little so I went ahead with plan A.

Don't much like climbing. Only do it so I can get to the descent. :-)

I love climbing. One of my favourite routes here has about 1,000 metres worth
spread across two largish climbs and some rolling hills. I should take some
photos next time I do it as the views are pretty good.

But I also feel privileged that our city was built on flat land which makes for
easy commuting. It's nice to be able to choose my terrain for a ride.

Very nice photos. Really does look like a lovely ride.

Thanks... I'd have liked to stop on the highway a couple of times as that was
pretty scenic as well. We were a couple of weeks too early to catch the lupins
at their best, but what was there was very nice. I must get around to
processing the rest of my photos from the trip.

Don't think I mentioned that I punctured at the halfway point just as I was
leaving to go back. Normally I'd be annoyed but I figured I'd changed tubes in
much worse places than that so I took my time and enjoyed it :) But I have
since added a CO2 inflator to my Xmas list.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Question to those who have their web site hosted by GoDaddy

2012-11-25 Thread Igor Roshchin

Boris,

I suspect you are aware of everything what I've written below..
But I am surprised why you asked, so, maybe there is something
new for you in this.

I didn't have experience with GoDaddy's hosting per se, but I see
your options as follows:
1. Use one of the existing dedicated photo-hosting services,
such as Flickr, Smugmug, 500px.com, ...
(BTW, 500px has a cyber monday special right now: https://500px.com/upgrade )

Personally, I would probably choose 500px, not sure at which paid level -
depending on what is needed. The reason for that is that I just don't
like flickr's own interface.

Cons: If you read ToS for all such photo-hosting services cafefully,
you'll find that you are giving them the rights to use your photos as they
like (non-exclusive license to publish, ditribute and use the content).
While it is clear that they need it to be able to display your photos
that you choose to make public, by this clause you grant them much more.
Some photographers are not comfortable with that.
Besides, the photo-hosting can take your photos hostage (as it has been
done recently by fotki.com)

2. Use a web-hosting/co-location/... (depending on the level desired)
and upload your own static galleries like those created in LR, JAlbum,
etc. (e.g. as Brian Walters does it for PUG).
Pro: You own everything and have full access.
Cons: Galleries are static. You have to regenerate/reupload them
if you need to change something.
You cannot have one photo appearing in several sets (without duplicated
copy - for each set).

I am currently using this route (when I have time to upload photos.. ooh)

3. Advanced webhosting/co-location VM/server/...
..with a Content Management software that essentially duplicates
the photo-hosting websites. I don't know if such software exists
(at the level comparable to that of Flickr, not just primitive homegrown
javascript/php/... scripts).
If you find such software, please let me know.

Igor

Re: Pentax Q with 5-15mm zoom $300 @Bestbuy

2012-11-25 Thread P. J. Alling

Damn, that's almost tempting.

Hi All!

Just in case somebody is interested:
Pentax Q with 5-15mm zoom lens is available at Bestbuy.com
for $299.99 (albeit it's incorrectly listed with x5 zoom)

It is (was) $347 at BH, but it's all sold out. It's at the same
price at Adorama.

Igor

PS. I've been told it was $279 at Newegg yesterday, but it is back to
$399 today.

Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a

Rokinon 8mm fisheye for $214 @BH and Amazon

2012-11-25 Thread Igor Roshchin

Sorry for spamming the list with lens sales information.
Some sales are very good, and I hope this info might be useful
for some people on the list.
(Or maybe somebody will hate me for the episode of LBA.)

Rokinon 8mm/3.5 fisheye for Pentax mount for only $214 -
at BH (until Nov. 27) and Amazon.
If anybody was considering this lens, - this is probably the time.
I doubt it would go any lower any time soon.

Igor thanks for sharing about the sales but when one is broke one can
only dream about such a lens. Thanks though...

WTB 300mm reflex (mirror) lens

2012-11-25 Thread Paul Ewins
Hi all,
I've been doing a project with the 400-600 reflex zoom that makes use of it's
infamous donut bokeh. I'd like to get a little closer to my subjects and the
shortest mirror lens that I can find for M42 or K-mount is a 300mm. It looks
like a few different manufacturers made one and I'm not fussed which one. As
far as I know nobody sells them new (Tokina has one, but only for M4/3 which is
no help) so I thought I would sing out and see if anyone has one they'd like to
part with.

regards,
Paul Ewins
