Re: test 2

2022-12-12 Thread Bob Pdml
Hotmail is Outlook. It wasn’t even Microsoft when I got my hotmail email
address in 1995, it was for cool and hip travellers to use E:mail in
’inter-net’ cafés in obscure countries where electricity was provided once a
week by a donkey going round and round in circles.

Anyway, for the sake of simplicity I have just set up an iCloud alias, with
which I have just subscribed, and I will shortly be unsubscribing my
pdm...@hotmail.com address and consigning it to the dustbin of history.

And now that we’ve left the EU we don’t even have the donkey anymore, we had to
give it back.

Re: OT: The Treasure of His Youth: The Photographs of Paolo Di Paolo.

2022-12-09 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks, that’s very interesting. I’ll look out for the film and for Di Paolo’s
photographs.

I have recently become very interested in the so-called neo-realist
photographers, who I think are not as well-known as they should be.

Coincidentally, a favourite film of the Italian neo-realist filmmakers has
recently been revived - Ferrania P30. I sent 5 rolls to be processed yesterday
and I’m keen to see what it looks like when it comes back.

Re: December PUG is up

2022-12-07 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks! Interesting how so many of them make pairs.

I like ‘Leaf’ by Reinhard very much. The almost complementary colours of the
leaf and tiles in that beautiful light and shade, with the shape of the leaf
almost echoing that of the tile pattern, and of course the beautiful tiles
themselves, work very well in my view.

We stayed in Statesville for the week or so we were there.

That’s an impressive bit of detective work- you could be right about Winston
Salem, I may have got the places confused. My overriding memory is that the
place seemed deserted and we jaywalked a lot, since it was a new experience for
us (no such thing over here).

Also it was very hard to get a drink in Statesville.

Re: Gorilla

2022-12-01 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks Godfrey.

One thing I’m doing differently from my first attempts is to use the tubes and
slide holder instead of the Leitz Beoon which I originally used. The reason for
this is to prevent unwanted light altering the colour balance - I’m too lazy to
do it in the dark! The Beoon of course handles several formats.

My current method doesn’t handle unmounted slides and negatives. I’m not aware
of a film strip holder that will fit the Pentax slide holders I have, they’re
all too thick, so I may need to experiment with butchering a plastic slide
mount, or I may have to close the curtains and switch the lights off.

Divide and conquer!

I retired a couple of years ago with the same intentions. After a few
half-hearted first attempts then putting everything in a cupboard for 18
months, I now have a process I’m fairly happy with.

Once you’re happy with your set-up you’ll probably be able to raw scan each
carousel in a couple of hours at most. Then when you’ve done the donkey work
you can concentrate on editing the best images.

Re: Gorilla

2022-11-30 Thread Bob Pdml
I wrote a longish reply yesterday to Larry and John in Stan’s thread about
scanning, but the server told me to f*ck off even though the only vaguely HTMLy
stuff was John and Larry’s email addresses, which the server itself had sent
me! Won’t eat its own dog food.

Anyway, these photos illustrate what I was saying about how I’m now ‘scanning’.

The pictures were shot in 1998/9 on Kodachrome, I can’t remember which zoo it
was. Almost certainly shot with a Pentax LX, Pentax-A 400mm f5.6 lens and
possibly a 1.4X extender.

I digitised them and a bunch of others yesterday using a LUMIX GX8 attached via
a Novoflex MFT/PENT adapter to a Pentax-M 50mm f4 macro. This was attached with
a 49mm reversing adapter to a Pentax auto extension tube #3 which in turn was
attached to a slide holder 1X K. This gives a 1:1 reproduction ratio which
means there is very little cropping needed to make the 4/3rds image fit the
original 35mm format. With a full frame body it would be even easier, but my
only full frame digital camera only does black and white. The light source was
a Kaiser slimlite plano. I used focus peaking, lowest ISO available, f/8 and
Aperture priority.

The point of all this is that I find the whole process and outputs much better,
quicker and easier than a scanner. I used to have a Nikon LS1000 (?) but the
process was awful and the results nowhere near as good as I’m getting now. So
my recommendation to anyone thinking of getting a scanner is, try this first,
it really is surprisingly good and simple.

Hoo-bloody-ray, after several bounces it got through.

So, as I was saying, this is a small gallery from a trip to NC in 1997, my
first of only two visits to the US. Shot on LX or MX, Pentax lenses, wrong
hood. Ektachrome converted to b in LR.

I happened to pick these at random earlier today when trying out digitisation
of slides using a Pentax helicoidal slide holder and auto extension tubes with
a 30mm micro-4/3rds macro lens and LUMIX GX8.

Re: experiment in posting BW's Erwiitt link

2022-11-25 Thread Bob Pdml
I can change the font in the client easily enough but that doesn’t necessarily
change the format of the sent mail to plain text, that would be a different
setting. Apple hides these things, probably to protect its users from
themselves, and its help desk from its users. In addition, Outlook now wraps
all sorts of crap around incoming links that make life more painful than it has
to be, in order to protect idiots from bad people. Since I retired I can’t be
bothered chasing IT problems around, especially when at least three separate
components are involved, iOS Mail, Outlook and the PDML.

An earlier reply to you was rejected, claiming that I had exceeded the message
size limit. This was either because I had omitted to remove the links in your
signature, or because I had playfully changed the font of some words to show
that it can be done.

It’s only the PDML that behaves like this so it’s really not that important to
me if I can’t send links easily. It’s annoying but I’m not going to go chasing
bugs for hours to try and resolve it.

Re: experiment in posting BW's Erwiitt link

2022-11-25 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks. I suspect it’s not a question of stateside or elsewhere as I notice
that Godfrey has a similar problem.

iOS Mail wraps links in a preview. I suspect it formats all mail in a way that
the PDML server dislikes as I often get replies rejected for exceeding the
maximum size the server likes, even though they are clearly well under the
maximum if they were plain text.

I don’t know of a way to change iOS Mail settings to send in plain text.

I use a hotmail account so I could probably try sending something directly from
Outlook, but it’s not the answer to this issue as I don’t want to use Outlook.

Incidentally one of the papers pointed out that we will once again start having
notes and coins with different sovereigns on, which we haven’t had since
decimalisation in 1974. So people younger than about 50 haven’t seen
mixed-sovereign currency before - something I’d never thought about. When I

Hi Godfrey,

I hope this gets through to PDML.

I’ll send you a picture separately, but I found some photos online of other
examples of the M 120/2.8 and they all have the same rear end as mine, so it
must be the way it was designed, and the Novoflex adapter hasn’t taken it into
account. The global market for people for people wanting to put this particular
lens model on a Leica is probably in the neighbourhood of 1, so I’m not

Er, no we haven’t and no it isn’t.

141,725 people from a party membership of 172,437 voted for one of two
candidates chosen by the party’s MPs. Of those 141,725 people only 56% voted
for her. So about 80,000 people in a population of about 47 million who can
vote in a general election.

Fewer than half of her party’s MPs voted for her, so she doesn’t even command
her own party in parliament. Some of them are already talking about getting rid
of her before the next scheduled general election, in 2024.

She herself has never achieved anything politically, except to become leader of
her party, and that only because she has the support of the ultra right wing
disaster capitalists, who are like hyenas, except that I quite like hyenas.

Like the Republicans in the USA the Tories here never cease to amaze by their
ability to find ever worse, more extreme scumbags to be their party leader.

Strange thing

2022-09-05 Thread Bob Pdml
Well, two strange things really.

First is an on-topic message from me.

Second is an oddity with a Pentax-M 120mm f2.8 lens that I have.

If anyone here has one of these, could you please compare the back of it with
your other M lenses?

I have been doing some informal ‘shoot outs’ with my Pentax-M lenses and my
Leica lenses, and will put them online if anyone is interested. Anyway, I have
been using my Leica M10 monochrome body for all the shots, and a Novoflex
adapter for the Pentax lenses, without any problems.

Except that the 120mm lens doesn’t fit the adapter.

On closer inspection, the bit at the back (sorry for the technical jargon) of
the 120mm lens where the aperture levers are is significantly different from
the other lenses. The photos at this link show you. The 120mm is on the left;
the other lens is a 135mm, which is about the same size.

(A link to some pictures should go here, but the server keeps rejecting my
emails with links. I’ll try to find another way of showing the pictures).

On the 135mm and other lenses there are some concentric grooves at the back,
and it is stepped down. The 120mm is plain, and doesn’t have the step.

On the adapter there is a flange which goes down into the dropped part of the
step when you put a lens on, and of course it can’t do this on the plain back
end of the 120mm, so the adapter won’t go on the lens.

The lens fits my Pentax MX fine, as well as a number of other MXes I’ve been
evaluating with a view to buying a new one. As far as I know it doesn’t affect
anything when shooting. However, I need to test this lens specifically as any
problems it causes may have become mixed up with problems which have caused me
to reject other cameras.

It’s possible that someone has had the lens altered for some reason, although
it is otherwise mint-, but it looks almost like a KF mount.

Anybody else have one like this?

Thanks,
Bob

We have lots of flint though, so when climate change has dragged everyone back
to the Stone Age we’ll be laughing.

I have a (very dry*) allotment now and when I took it over about a month ago
the Lord of the allotment explained how it has a good loamy topsoil, then some
clay, then chalk all the way to Australia. They received a colossal water bill
last year because there was a huge mains leak that would have flooded anywhere
else, but just drained into the chalk without anyone noticing a problem.

Get rid of them all. I got rid of mine years ago because they, and the player,
took up so much space. The cases are just more useless plastic, and at London
property prices I figured I could get better value out of the square footage.

When I want to listen to music now I stream it to my hearing aids, but you can
rip the CDs to some sort of storage device (not vinyl…) and use a software
player that gives you the information you want.

Most of us are of an age when the cameras we bought new are now vintage…

What is your 1926 English camera?

Somewhere in the family we have my father’s camera which he bought used in 1956
for the Melbourne Olympics - it was twenty years old at the time. An Agfa of
some sort, very difficult to use. My oldest is a 1958 Leica M3. Not
particularly old by Leica standards. After that it’s the MX I bought new in
1979, which brings me back to the first sentence…

I saw Prince Andrew on Monday. I’d just dropped my Boris bike off at Green Park
station when a whistle-blowing police motorcycle escort barged its way along
Piccadilly, guarding two black Range Rovers full of cops. In the front
passenger seat of the first car sat the disgraced prince of the realm,
stony-faced.

I wondered what he’d been up to that required so many policemen to arrest him.

I didn’t see who was in the second car.

A few months ago I bought a used Panasonic GX8 as a second body alongside my
Olympus E-M1 Mk II. It was like new with only about seven hundred shutter
clicks, and was about half the price I’d seen advertised elsewhere.

It very quickly became the camera I reach for first as it’s much, much smaller,
lighter and more simple than the Oly. I subsequently bought some used and
cosmetically ugly, but optically sound, Panasonic lenses (12-35/2.8,
35-100/2.8) which are much lighter and easier to handle than the M.Zuiko
12-40/2.8, and a new 50/1.7.

I like this kit so much that I’ve bought a second mint GX8, with even fewer
shutter clicks (just over 400) than the other one, at an even lower price, and
plan to sell the E-M1 and that lens, along with a few other bits of Olympus kit.

I realise the GX8 is probably not the camera for someone like John, but for me
it’s a really good find.

Hello again, by the way. I seem to have gone awol from the PDML for a couple of

People who pay by phone on the tube during rush hour in London are a monstrous
pain in the ass as it takes longer for the device to do its thing than it takes

There are only 8 photos on the Instagram post, so you may have seen them all.
They are by a certain Jessie Tarbox* Beals. Well worth a look elsewhere,
particularly as she photographed the national parks, which I know interest you,
at night.

Interesting lens! Do you use it on 4/3rds as a 50ish mm equivalent?

There is an interesting triptych to be made with the missile, the road arrow

Surely the planes are at infinity or beyond? So why focus at all? Choose your
focal length and aperture, set it manually to infinity focus, or the hyperfocal
distance, and leave it. Or am I missing something?
